  • [NPC] Sunny and the Kid

    "Howdy!
    I'm SUNNY.
    SUNNY the SUNFLOWER!"

Sunny is a big friendly sunflower in a cramped little clay pot carried around by a quiet dead-eyed kid. Sunny is also a plant kryptae that managed to put down roots in the fallen body of a Centimanus and extract enough Vitriol and memories from its innards to fan its dim spark of awareness into something deep, complex, and utterly malevolent. It understands its situation well enough to know that it has intelligence, but no physical ability to act on the world or even speak. It knows it has reason, but no capacity for empathy. It has a future, but no hope. It could simply die if it ran out of Pyros, but it fears death and the end of awareness more than it fears its own continued misery.

What it does have is the capacity to manipulate. Flux has granted it the power to put down roots in the dreams of Prometheans, and perhaps other supernatural beings as well. And in dreams and visions, it can communicate. It plays the helpful advisor, passing on insights and warnings or just being a sympathetic ear in a lonely and hostile world. And inevitably, it tries to see what it can make its new playmate do. It treats the world something like a videogame, with characters it can use to do helpful or horrifying things until it gets bored of them and moves on, with no consequences to the actual player.

The Kid is an inexperienced and apparently mute Centimanus with a child's body whom Sunny has manipulated, gaslighted and browbeaten into carrying its flowerpot around and introducing it to new Prometheans. This way it can be replanted as needed, set down near someone's sleeping body, or fed Pyros by soaking its soil in Promethean blood. Sunny is utterly dependent on the Kid, but it has no empathy or affection for them, only contempt. It tends to express this by entering the Kid's dreams and reminding them how much suffering they have enabled by carting Sunny around, and how hopeless their situation is. Maybe a sympathetic throng could pull them away from Sunny's influence and back onto the Pilgrimage after crossing paths. Or maybe the Kid is much, much worse than Sunny could ever be.

    The Kid

I get the feeling The Kid would do better as one of the Matchless than one of the Riven.

I also suspect that there's a better choice of Bestowment for The Kid, but I can't quite determine what that should be…

I was thinking that too, but I ran out of creativity juice. Something DETERMINATION-related, probably.

e: just noticed that you already colored determine and now I just look silly.

Think of falling water and the underground.

              Think de-termination.

And you know what the best part of all this is?
                You'll come back.
                Again.
                And again.
                And again!

Because you want a "happy ending."
Because you "believe you can be human."
                Because you "never give up."

                Isn't that delicious?
                Your "Bestowment..."
The power that let you get this far...
                It's gonna be your downfall!

The Kid's Bestowment: But it Refused
The Kid doesn't die. Ever. If there's even a shred of hope remaining, they can come back swinging. But this isn't an enlightening journey to the Underworld like the Revivification Bestowment. Their body simply refuses to die, drawing on the power of Flux to reinvigorate itself.

When the Kid marks their last Health box with aggravated damage, it immediately triggers a Praxidikae Firestorm centered on them. At the conclusion of the Firestorm, they may spend a Willpower dot to immediately revivify, regain Health equal to their Azoth, and gain two dots in a Dread Power of the Storyteller's choosing. This triggers a Wasteland as normal for reviving.

                ---

Unexpected rules consequence: the nature of Lilithian Firestorms and Sunny's Health means it won't survive the Kid's Bestowment if it's nearby, which it almost definitely would be. If you want to give the poor little flower a slim chance of hanging on, you might grant it Stamina 2.
