    Hello, everybody! Haberdasher here. Yes, I have arisen from the torpor that is college. My workload in the beginning of the semester was quite high, and I often didn't have the time or energy to work on conversions. I've been working on the Barjot on and off, and I finally have them ready.

    The Barjot are a fairly straightforward conversion. I decided to give them a bloodline blessing that tied in to their bane: yes, they have to be around each other or suffer crippling anxiety. But now, they get bonuses to their disciplines and Carthian Law abilities for staying within the confines of their bane.

    Next up will be the Deucalion. Ventrue who take the Ventrue stereotype of arrogant snobs up to 11. I'm going to enjoy converting their discipline.

    Bloodline Conversion- Barjot
    We own and want nothing, we share everything we find. We reject the bourgeois sensibilities of the Invictus. We have carried Carthian philosophy to its logical conclusion. We are the Barjot.

    The Barjot are a small bloodline, and certainly one of the most peculiar known to those who study the variations of the Blood. Born out of the spirit of freedom and freethinking that was the Bohemian movement in France, the Barjot are unusually communal. Throughout history, the Barjot have tied themselves to anti-establishmentarian and counter-cultural movements, from beatniks to hippies to hipsters. No matter what guise they wear, the Barjot are united in an intense codependency, an insatiable wanderlust, and a notable diregard for the concept of private property and the etiquette of houseguests.

    Background: The Barjot were founded by Amaury Lelinek, a Gangrel ancilla who befriended two Parisian Bohemians in the 1860s. Lelinek could never keep up with them in debate, and one night, he mortally wounded them in the midst of a particularly animated discussion. Filled with remorse, Lelinek Embraced his friends, in defiance of Paris' Traditions. Lelinek and his childer were brought before the Prince of Paris. The Prince was reluctant to put the errant Gangrel to Final Death, but when he noticed that Lelinek and his childer were driven to Frenzy by being seperated, he instead banished them from Paris, arguing that their codependence was punishment enough, and declared them to be the Jobard, “insane.”

    Jelinek and his childer began to wonder from place to place, and began to formulate a code of living based on their philosophical musings: they would keep a strict vow of poverty, and whatever they were given and salvaged, and never keep a permanent residence, free of restriction and social obligation except those they made to each other. Over time, more Gangrel joined them, and they changed their name Jobard to the slang version “Barjot,” a joke and source of pride where once there had been shame. Decades passed, and the Barjot's supernatural ties grew stronger, until no member of the bloodline could stand to be away from the rest of the group for even a few moments. Several members became disillusioned with the bloodline, which culminated in one of Lelinek's friends and original two childer walking out into the light of dawn to commit suicide in the 1900s.

    The Barjot briefly settled in Amsterdam, where they were exposed to the Carthian Movement for the first time Seeing parallels between his own ideals and those of the Firebrands, Lelinek declared that the Barjot were natural Carthians, committed to an anti-materialist ideal that ran counter to the bourgeois values of the Invictus. For a time, Lelinek and his progeny were hailed as allies of the Movement, but the Barjot's chaotic lifestyle and lack of concern for property and obligation began to grate on the Carthians. Eventually, Lelinek publicly apologized for the falling out, and decided that it would be best if the Barjot left Amsterdam, and practiced a more mobile form of Carthian ideals. For years, the Barjot wandered across Europe, always finding home among a domain's Carthian Movement, but sooner or later being driven out after it became clear that the Barjot were committed to a more extreme- and impractical- interpretation of Carthian values than the locals found tolerable.

    The Barjot were trapped in Copenhagen when Germany invaded Denmark during World War II, and the Barjot attempted to slip south into Germany, past the German lines in the middle of the night. The scheme ended in disaster when three members of the bloodline were mowed down by machinegun fire and brought to Final Death. The Barjot were devastated, and Lelinek's remaining original childe vowed to sleep for three hundred years; he is now carried by Lelinek and his coterie in their travels. The Barjot escaped the horrors of Europe, and arrived in New York, which they were quickly driven out of. In the years since the, the Barjot have spread out across North and South America. Sometimes, they find welcome in a domain, but they are always forced to leave either temporarily or permanently.

    The Becoming: In life, Barjot were usually members of whatever counter-culture was prominent at the time in whatever domain the Barjot were dwelling in at the time. They are unparalleled rebels and freespirits, often bucking the social conventions of gender, race, and class. The Barjot often have an eccentric sense of fashion, often dressing in loose, gender-bending clothing that was made by hand or cobbled together from various fabrics; above all else, the Barjot cannot wear clothing that has been purchased by themselves or others, and they cannot steal clothing. Whatever jewelry they wear must be fashioned from refuse or trash that carries no conventional worth. Mental Attributes are usually primary, and skills like Athletics, Drive, Expression, and Socialize are prioritized over confrontational skills like Brawl, Larceny, Weaponry, or Subterfuge. Merits like Resources and Retainer are almost unheard of due to the Barjot's commitment to poverty and disdain for social hierarchy, but Allies and Striking Looks are common.

    In the Danse Macabre: Even among the Carthians, the Barjot have a reputation for being unruly rabble. Wherever they dwell, typically abandoned structures, the walls become covered in graffiti- quotes from philosophers, political slogans, and snatches of the Cacophony. Carthians in a domain will usually offer travelling Barjot the use of a Haven, but always come to regret it in the light of the mess they make of the space given them; French Carthians view Barjot tenants as penance for the banishment of the bloodline at its inception. Still, the Barjot's anarchic lifestyle, radical and inflexible interpretation of Carthian philosphy, and strident pacifism inevitably leads to a falling-out with the local Firebrands. The Barjot are too committed to Carthian principles- and too erratic, for that matter- to belong to any other covenant, but they can and do incorporate elements of Sanctified and Acolyte teachings into their personal beliefs and will attend services and rituals. The Invictus is antithetical to their beliefs, and the Ordo Dracul's regimented scholasticism is too fixed for their tastes.

    Bloodline Bane: The Barjot are communal not by choice, but by necessity. Any time a Barjot is seperated from other members of her bloodline, her Beast constantly urges her to rejoin them at any cost. If a Barjot ever finds herself outside of sensory range of at least one other Barjot, she must immediately roll to resist Frenzy. She must roll again to resist Frenzy after a number of turns equal to successes rolled. This continues until she returns to sensory range of another Barjot, or she succumbs to Frenzy. A Barjot can choose to try and ride the wave, but under any circumstance, she will attempt to reunite with other members of her bloodline by the quickest route possible. An exceptional success allows her to resist Frenzy for the remainder of the scene. Barjot in a group know when another moves out of range and are saddened by the seperation, but do not feel the same urge to reunite with the missing individual.

    Bloodline Disciplines: Animalism, Celerity, Protean, Resilience

    Bloodline Gift: Force de Beaucoup
    The Barjot are best known for the crippling codependence that their bloodline saddles them with. But what most Kindred don't know is that the Barjot bane also comes with a blessing in disguise. Any time two or more Barjot are gathered together, their ability to invoke their Disciplines and Carthian Law is bolstered. When a Barjot is within sensory range of other Barjot, she receives a bonus to Discipline rolls equal to the number of Barjot around her, up to a maximum of +5.

    Interesting, I haven't read the Carthians book but these guys seem like an NPC or everyone plays one kind of line.

      As presented in the covenant book, the Carthians were definitely geared for NPC status. That was true for several bloodlines in 1e. I tried to lessen that with the bloodline blessing. But I think the issue of needing another one around in order to function could be remedied by taking the True Friend Merit and having that represent an NPC who always hangs around your character.
