  • Vampires and Mirrors, Cameras, and Video

So, where exactly does the idea that vampires couldn't show up in mirrors, and for modern updates video and digital recording, come from?

I heard once that it had to do with old mirrors having silver backs, and silver being considered a holy metal that would not reflect evil.

So any ideas on a metaphysical justification for why it affects video and digital?

Apparently it's similar. Like mirrors caught a reflection of your soul, so to do photographs and their more modern variants.

also i seem to remember silver (or silver nitrate) used to be used in the development of film.

              So less silver, less interference?

I guess, but some fiction (not VtR) has vampires not showing up in photos at all. same as with mirrors.

In VtR, vampires don't "not show up" in these.

In VtR, the Beast makes the vampire subconsciously move and angle themselves so that there's never a clear image of them. It always shows up blurry or unclear.

Presume ably, the Beast doesn't like being spotted while it's hunting, like many other predators.

So they're subconsciously moving so fast it distorts the recorded image? Damn, I knew vampires were fast but damn.

It's more that they move in ways that keep them out of or obscured in shots. If one was passing by as you were taking a picture of your friends, he would have passed by the friend stretching his arm out, thus obscuring the vampire's face. Similarly the Beast notes security cameras and the vampire unconsciously moves around their fields of vision, or only within them when otherwise obscured, such as by their face directed away from the camera.

If you just snapped up a camera at a vampire and took a picture, they'd have likely turned their head or shielded their face with a hand thrust out, or moved and blur the image.

It's a little more like the antagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4's constant efforts to avoid standing out; they're always positioned such that they're out of focus or looking the wrong way.

A vampire does not lack a reflection. You just never see her in the mirror. The Beast knows precisely where to stand. A vampire is not a blurred mess in a photograph, but for some reason, never seems to look at the camera, or the flash smears the image, or it goes over- or under-exposed.

What happens if you place a staked vampire in a fully mirrored chamber, with video surveillance mounted in each corner of the room (including floors)? Remove stake.

PS. Bonus to avoid an "obvious" out: vampire possesses no Celerity Discipline skill.

It's just stealth, it's not invisibility. Unless it had some sort of Devotion or Merit or was a Hollow Mekhet it would likely be recorded. You could still just not get a good shot of it.

In the end you can portray it however you want.

The Beast panics, and the vampire 'pulls a face', distorting their visage in such a odd manner that none would recognise them from the photos. :P

Also, their trashing causes a shoe to fly off and smash the mirrors in such a manner that all shatter. Obviously.
