The main problem is figuring out how to justify not being present for a good portion of the daytime.

Maybe a cold war bunker or hidden cellar from Prohibition-era the clique is not aware of?

Also, if people are affraid of having a psycho in their midst, hiding oneself to sleep alone does sound like a passably legit excuse, i guess.

Pretty much, yeah. The idea is that there's a 'secret/hidden location' with an entrance located somewhere in or near the house the the killer(s) is unaware of and the PCs can camp in during the day.

Or sticking together with people that are known to be safe.

What makes an explanation for the coterie disappearing during daylight hours.

Honestly they should have an explanation ready to go before they committed to going but since the premise of the plot is that they go and the killings are an unaccounted for veritable it’s understandable that whatever they planned didn’t work out.
