  • [2E] Bale Hounds Fetishes

I’m running Bale Hounds storyline and want players to find some tempting Fetishs that can turn them to the cult of Maeljin. Sadly, items from Blasphemies book – Skinner Mask and Bale Blade – are too much… obvious? Most sane Uratha would not touch them on start, feeling this aura of wickedness around them.

I was more thinking about something like ‘cursed’ Fetish – it works good and gives nice powers – but it’s also starting to whisper wicked ideas to user. Something needed in time of great need, but that can ‘logically’ stir one character in to arms of Maeljin. Or something looking harmless, but that start slowly corrupt user from the spirit’s inside Influences. Probably items made by servants of Asmodai, Maastraac, Pseulak or Thurifuge.

    Will you help, Werewolf forumers?

Messing with your player character's agency like that is... tricky, to say the least.

Incentivize them towards bad behavior? Like eating people, etc.? It is within the range of Werewolf behavior anyways. Once they indulge a few times, that gives you (slight) license to drop an Addicted Condition on them, or start tracking Corruption Points in the background. Give them perks for reaching new heights of depravity.

In the end, when you bring up the topic of becoming Bale Hounds, the players should see how fitting it is for the path their characters have walked to this point.

Yossarian: "And lo, it was optimal."

Well, best would be one of PC to go over this 'cursed Fetish' allure. But if not - simply 'Fetish calling dark thoughts' to NPC will suffice. I just want to have in-story reason that some Uratha character would become Bale Hounds after items 'tempting influence' - is it PC or NPC is secondary issue.

Rather like becoming Maeljin worshipers - of course Hounds of Baalphegor will probably start as 'typical Uratha cannibal', but with those 'cursed Fetishes' I wanted them to become more and more obsessed over Dark Nine and their various servants.

So here are very general ideas of Fetishes based on portfolio of each from Dark Nine. I would be glad for help in hammering them more into proper 2E Fetishes. Will edit this post with rest ideas for Fetishes.

            Fetishes by Maeljin:

            · Asmodai – Rage

Fetishes of Rage are whispering of dark anger and release of Kuruth to user of item. Most of the time they are wearable jewelry, less often on weapons – as Death Rage many times makes using fighting tools useless.

            · Baalphegor – Gluttony

Fetishes of Gluttony marks everlasting hunger of Baalphegor servants. Those items are putting thoughts of user to see other humans, wolves or Uratha as next, tasty supplies of Essence.

            · Beliar – Sloth

            · Carnala – Lust

            · Lamashtu – Pride

            · Maastraac – Envy

            · Mammon – Greed

            · Pseulak – Deceit

            · Thurifuge – Violance

Fetishes of Violence are whispering to use to solve conflicts the quick way – by killing his opponents. Most pf the time they are made from weapons, with so called ‘light trigger’ ( even when those items are made from the times of at least Sundering ).

Rage: Give tangible bonuses such as +X to strength, at the drawback of falling to hard rage after X turns with little recourse after. Make the attuned character's Kuruth not trigger his packmate's and/or regard them as prey whilst so attuned.

Gluttony: Allow the attuned character to eat the spirit of his victims, this way if they eat a human, take +1 in the human's highest ability score; if they eat an Uratha, it allows them to unlock Gifts belonging to the victim assuming you have relevant renown to it, all while you still have essence from the victims in your system.

Violence: Give the character Influence in Violence plus the ability to feed of the ensuing violence much like a spirit could. (The difference between a wrath hound and a violence one is the one between a warlord and the weapon smuggler which supply them respectively.) - This could be actually adapted to all the other vices quite easily.

I think various applications of the Urged Condition would handle this perfectly. Use an disproportionately awesome power* equals getting the Urged condition for increasingly degenerate things as the Uratha (Black) spirals downward (pun-intended). Starts small like 13 Sins.

Messing with player character agency is not problematic, in fact it can be Amazing if the player opts in!
Messing with the Player's agency is the sticky wicket in this situation.

That's why I love the Beat system, it allows the player to enjoy a moment of disempowerment for a character by knowing fundamentally it will make the character able to be more awesome in the story later, in a real measurable way. Even for those who are not role-playing for the Protagonist Empowerment Fantasy, getting a reward is satisfying.

*"Disproportionately awesome" meaning compared to fetishes without the Urging flaw, again acting as a tempting factor to sweeten the pot as it were...

One of the Lodges books has another Bale Hound lodge, devoted to Mammon. Their fetish is the Bad Penny.

If you converted it to second edition, upon activation whoever 'owned' it would be tagged with the Resonance: Greed Condition, tainting all the Essence they make throughout the course of their day with Greed. The original version also offered a bonus to greed spirits in regard to using Influences and Numina on the holder, which could be mechanically represented by giving them the Open Condition instead, which might be too powerful. Or something like Reception where they leak Greed Essence and can't resist possession from Greed spirits. Or just go the same way and offer a bonus to spirits trying to use their powers against them. Until they threw the coin away, that being the only way to get rid of the curse.

Of course that's not something an average Uratha would really get much out of.

Idea: Have the Spirit in the Fetish slowly work up the Manifestation/Condition tree against those using the Fetish until they escape when they final Claim the user.

I'd call it a Flaw of the Fetish: Breached

                    Fetish Flaw Condition
                    Breached
The fetish does not perfectly contain the entity within, there are cracks in its prison that it can exploit. A bit of its Influence and Manifestations insidiously sips out during its use.
Effect: The user gains the Resonant Condition appropriate to the Entity bound within the fetish when they use it and don't already have that Condition. The condition lasts for a day. If they do have that Resonant Condition it becomes Open for a scene, and if already Open the user gains the Persistent Urged Condition which redefines the Urge each time they use it. After having earning 15 - (the contained Entity's Rank) worth of Beats from that Condition they gain the Possessed Condition for a scene each day afterward. This continues to happen unless the body of the victim is destroyed (it'll continue to happen to corpses after death), the Possessed Condition gets ended via Abjuration, exorcisms and forced contact with banes or bans while it is happening, or the victim is Claimed. If the victim goes a year being subjected to Possessed Condition each day the victim gains the Claimed Condition caused by the entity within and the Fetish disintegrates as it escapes, and everyone affected by this fetish flaw are freed from cycles of gaining the Possessed Condition.
Cause: Dramatic Failure in Fetish Creation; Apparently "succeeding" Fetish Creation on Entities greater than 5 Ranks; Finding a way and using the principals of fetish creation on an ephemeral entity that isn't a spirit.
Beats: Are awarded for the conditions this causes.

                      Oh, that's a good one.

A Beliar Fetish would probably allow for some combat efficiency. I'm thinking when in gauru form you can make called shots without the penalty.

Was thinking of some sort of 'Lens of Ymir' in the form of a bowl that would Mass Create cold in the area, giving the Extreme Cold and Icy Tilts, but would expand outward the users Renown in miles for every life sacrificed to it, in the form of their blood being drained into the bowl. Though that needed more work.

Looking into this nothing pole thing, I was thinking you could do something that would upset the spirits of an area while also shifting blame from the person who set up the pole to whoever the pole is targeting, basically turning them into a thorn in the side of the spirits that they'll work against. Alternatively, and this is more of a rite, but the werewolves store Essence into it and its offered as a 'bounty' of sorts, allowing the spirit that kills the target being to 'own' and collect the Essence. Maybe instead of the bounty it could 'cap' a locus, shifting the blame to whoever the pole was built for.
