  • Ridden by ‘benevolent’ Spirits

Let’s talk about horror of Spirit-Ridden by (seemingly) innocent Spirits. I prepare Prologue for new Wolf-Blooded player that I think about activating Horse Tell from being possessed by Knowledge Spirit. She plans to work as librarian, so Spirit possessing her in the library would be logical. Question is simple – What are horror implications of being possessed by (seemingly) benevolent Spirit?

In our example, what, Knowledge Spirit makes (future) WB to read a lot of books? Does not seems very scary.

There's no true benevolent spirit, that's the catch. All spirits care for is their next meal. Be it for suffusing their being with their influence, or having a meat puppet expand the library with another wing ASAP.

What sort of library is it? What's the knowledge the spirit thirsts for the most? what's it's poison, so to speak?

Read, girl. Read and know.. Eating is not reading. There are no books in the bathroom. Read and know. You can rise from your filth only when retrieving a new book. Read and know.

And that's just with Fetter. When she's possessed, there's just empty periods of time she can't account for as the spirit takes over their body and does things with it. So she goes into the library to work at 8 AM, and she's possessed and she is released when it's closed at 8 PM and she has no idea what happened in the meantime. Friends who saw her would think she was being standoffish or just plain rude, people would think she was rude and strict. Mom called around noon, dad had a heart attack, come quick. Spirit doesn't read or care about messages, and they stop coming. It's only after she gets home that she's read them. Girlfriend stopped by to see her, you completely zoned on her, big one-sided fight, spirit utterly ignored it.

Though Knowledge would have her out learning things and proving things. She may be learning in a library but it's nothing the spirit doesn't already know. It would be the thing pushing a scientist to go too far, because she must know. While a library spirit would make her be quiet except when at her desk, and keep proper order and ensure everything is in its proper place and she wouldn't be able to leave.

Bologna University library. Do not have particulars on the spirit, yet. From the Wikipedia about University, it seems it can be interested with Knowledge of Law:
'The university is historically notable for its teaching of canon and civil law; indeed, it was set up in large part with the aim of studying the Digest, a central text in Roman law, which had been rediscovered in Italy in 1070, and the university was central in the development of medieval Roman law. Until modern times, the only degree granted at that university was the doctorate.'

From University Library site's history, it seems that it started with natural science collections, but then expanded in almost all classical knowledge branches.

Would spirit be enough forceful to impose the non-powerful individual to force her actions to make this another wing ASAP? Character is only a student, looking to become maybe librarian - so with no real decisive power on the building.

Indeed. The student will get in trouble if she goes out of the way to try that, right?

          The spirit doesn’t care.

How much Rank should have Spirit for this? I'm not sure I want to make Ridden from the main Spirit of Library itself, maybe one of it's brood?

One of its brood you say... then Rank 2?

A knowledge spirit focused on law is a thing madly obsessed with rules, most likely. Seems like a natural evolution from trying to understand the laws of nature, to trying to understand the laws of man, given the library/university history.

All spirits thrive on the reiteration of the element at the core of their nature more than anything. Left unchecked, a spirit would prefer for their host to concentrate on that and nothing more. Excess being negative in all things, there's room for all spirits to become an issue for the Ridden. As Malus said, truly benevolent spirits are a mirage in Forsaken, because of their alien mentality.

Such a spirit would want for the library to grow, for people to read even if stops them from doing more urgent things and for people to recognize the University as a haven for scholars and oasis of knowledge. Also, speaking from experience, Bologna is proud of his academical tradition and of its university. The library is not seen as much as a law library rathen than as "The University Library". It has the rights to do so, but those who go there tend to never shut up about it and feel superior even towards those who went in other respected universities, regardless of their own academical achievements.

No, I'm not bitter, I swear.

While Spirits focus on being fed - it is their nature, after all - depending on its Rank (and thus development and awareness) and history, there may be other factors.

If the Spirit is powerful/developed enough, it might be aiming for longer term goals than just "read, knowledge, read". The character wants to be a librarian and thus have access to more knowledge? The Spirit could try to make sure she gets to be one (and secure for itself a long term food supply). Of course, it will probably also ensure she is dependent on it, so that her job becomes it's food supply. If it is not native to the library's brood, it could also be busy leveraging her into endearing itself to said brood.

If it has a history, it may have prior goals, enemies, deals, or Bans that have it do things not directly related to Knowledge. If it owes a Spirit of Rumors for something, it could use the character to spread (or start) rumors in repayment. If it was bound by a shaman to seek out a specific target, it might use the character to do that as well.

Of course, all this depends on it not being a "mere" Knowledge Spirit. For those, everyone has already listed the downsides of their monomanical nature.

Malkydel: "And the Machine dictated; let there be adequate illumination."
Yossarian: "And lo, it was optimal."

Keep in mind: Spirits of rank 3 and above seldom claim mounts, barring extreme mitigating factors such as the proverbial "forest fire" disaster in the Hisil (examples includes a rival pack displacing it from it's hunting ground, a far more formidable foe threatening it with extinction should it show it's face, and other developments such as, simply, the library catching fire). Mature spirits usually have a cushy spot in the shadow food chain - hence why the most powerful Claimed you'll see are a literal fusion of several lesser spirits within a single host (usually a brood, ie, a collective of different umia all feeding from a related thing - latching all into the miserable victim).

So I made a first take on this 'benevolent' Spirit of Knowledge in Library.

                        Value-of-Knowledge
                        ‘All that matter is KNOWLEDGE.’

Value is one of the main spirits living in Bologna University Library. He is personification of pursuit for Knowledge in ‘those sacred walls of Academia’, as often he mentions in discussions.

Description: Spirit looks like very large version of 18th century law handbook its existence started from. It’s a typical codex volume, bound in leather and imprinted with golden scale. The different thing is that on scales there are symbols of many other branches of science and lore like Caduceus or math formulas.

Storytelling Hints: Value likes to spread its influence by Fettering to the dedicated readers in the Library. Once in body, he whispers to read more and more lore, so the host would perfect his skills. Then he goes for the host to spend more and more time in building itself. And, finally, to make social actions to make library with larger content and have more space to took place. Even illegal actions.

                        Rank: 2
                        Attributes: Power 3, Finesse 4, Resistance 6
                        Willpower: 10
                        Essence: 15
                        Initiative: 10
                        Defense: 3
                        Speed: 7
                        Size: 3
                        Corpus: 9
                        Influences: Knowledge ••
Numina: Aggressive Meme (Knowledge), Drain, Host Jump, Implant Mission, Sign
                        Manifestations: Claim, Fetter, Twilight Form
Ban: Value need to ‘understand’ any source of knowledge shown to it
                        Bane: Fire
