  • [Æon] How much do people in the Trinity Era know about the Nova Era?

In 1E there had been a concerted effort to remove any information about "good" novas, to give everyone the impression that the only good Aberrant was a dead one.

But in 2E, rewrite seems to be much more about keeping the nova derived plans for Grey Goo off of the public archives.

So in that case, how much is publicly known about the Nova era? Do people know about the Fireman and the era of good times before everything went to hell?

There was still the crash so a lot of records were lost. However if you think about character's ages there should be a fair amount of living memory. Otha Herzog is a kid in 2028, probably with a favorite T2M action figure! So unless Anima reveals near-universal memory corruption for the generation of Aberrant War survivors, a general idea that "it started out good before enough turned into insane monsters, that's what made them so insidious" would still be known, and it may even be uncontroversial to acknowledge "they technically didn't all go evil, but it was so widespread it didn't matter."

I think they do for the most part, especially the older generations and people interested in history.

I did not reread the old Aeon trinity setting, but it feels quite the same for me.

Aberrants are generelly accepted as monsters (even though they might be human once), Any Aberrant that can´t be put in quarantine gets killed eventually. Both settings use the word Mutants for Quantum enhanced people.
The purge of the Chitra Bhanu still happend for the same reasons "beeing soft on aberrants".

Project reWrite and OpNet-crash still happend - those that have first hand experience are both old and maybe heavily traumatized. So I would say - very little is actually known, or that "even the more or less okay aberrants decided to leave."

Imho: Someone in 2120 that calls Aberrants "Novas" is to the Joe Hologram quite possible an "Aberrant Cultist", Also the experience was, that a many many very moral Novas became taint ridden monsters. It´s better to put them to sleep than to wait for a "rabies" outbreak. Furthermore the first aberants war - was a long long time ago. And the aberrants that came back are even more visibly monstrous than most people remember.
The new TC:Aeon lampshaded this very heavyily that even the most liberal democracies are surveillance states.

Some information will be spotty thanks to the crash and project rewrite, but overall, unless the information is in the setting secrets chapters, then there is a pretty good chance at least some of the public will know about it.

As I see, people have a very distorted image of the pre-war era, as most of the living in Aeon era were kids at best during Nova era. Also, the evolution to war was probably had a huge cover on media, what is probably much of the remaining information from the pre-war, and this cover probably was very scandalous as regular news are.

Interessting. For me it hits a lot home to Post-WW2-Germany and how, many people, institutions and companies "cleaned" themselves in any involvement with the Nazis after the war - sometimes because, they were nazis, sometimes just ashamed witnesses.

And as the Abberant war was also still full of Nova sympathizers, I image full blown cover ups of alot of stuff. HYeah you have alot of Holovids of Aberrants killing masses or grotesque experiments and children turning sub-aberrants just by exposure to Taint. People never telling their children that granpa was an Aberrant...

As written before - "yeah some nova did good things (repair earth ecology and climate, or that human fly rescued grandma cat and she had him for tea - but then they all went mad or left earth!)

There are still humans worshipping/serving Aberrants in Aeon. Yes, most humans are going to believe (pretty much correctly) that Novas were good once, but then they went mad, nearly destroyed the planet, left, and then came back as freaky monsters to destroy us. However, there are still going to be the people who refuse to believe all or part of that and will dig up as much information as they can about it. That's more what I was referencing when is aid some people know about it.

Isn't it canon that the Upeo Wa Macho were completely shocked to find Eden, a planet run by sane novas? Given that you presumably want well educated and highly competent people running your deep space exploration program, this implies the default assumption across all tiers of society is that novas are aberrants by default. The only groups to believe otherwise would be the Chitra Bhanu, certain senior segments of the Nippon government, and a few hidden groups under the Aeon Society umbrella.

As for their knowledge of the Nova Age, there is no reason for the whitewashed text books to mention that the individuals who developed various revolutionary technologies were in fact Mega-Intellect novas. This would be like the way American textbooks teach about Helen Keller without mentioning she was a radical socialist.

Aeon era people know that novas were a thing, they weren’t all bad, they did a lot of good, developed technologies, cleaned up the world, helped out.

But Aeon era people also know that Quantum eruption inevitably leads to mutation and madness, coupled with rapid development of near unstoppable power. Aeon era people know that it doesn’t matter how much you loved the person who erupted, they’ll go nuts and murder you and probably your city. Odds are they already did so by erupting. Aeon era people know that the energies the Aberrants draw on and use are long-term incompatible with normal humans, and if you let them live you’ll mutate until you’re dead or some kind of monster under their control.

Aeon era people know that as difficult as it is to know that these people were once human, they’re not anymore and need to be exterminated before they destroy humanity.

The colony on Eden flies against all this knowledge, which is why its existence is so shocking and confusing. The Aberrants everywhere else (Khantze Lu Ge etc.) absolutely conform to this. So now those in the know are trying to work out why Eden is different, while fully expecting them to turn out to be monsters at any moment.

Can I say that this is why there can't be any dark secrets under Eden. That it NEEDS to stay as 'good' and such as it seems to be. Like, yeah, there can be the normal petty human crimes and such but there can't be a secret fortress where Novas sacrifice children or a plot by Eden to destroy the universe for their god Divis Mal or anything. It needs to stay good. All the more to provide the point that just because things went bad doesn't mean it has to. Especially when one considers that the novas of Eden are older then the ones on Earth.

(Not saying you guys are planning on having a 'gotcha' moment with Eden, just saying it would be really thematically bad if there was one.)

Yeah, the reverance of the Novas with no semblance of social equality between these benevolent rulers and the common man makes the place morally nuanced enough without needing an evil twist.

To bad, i kind of wanted a next era/late aeon era rebirth of Novas. Since they are the third leg of humanity evolution along with psions and talents.
