replied to If you could change the Solar Charmset
Just a reminder that Sol is not just the God of the Sun. He's the God of a broad variety of things (including night!) and there's a lot of aesthetic to be drawn on there.

Which is insane really. That's just silly.

And also ridiculously powerful. It averages something like 39 net per roll.

Personally I'd cut a lot of the trees wayyy down. I'd set a limit of two dozen charms per tree even, perhaps. If you can't write a charm tree that exemplifies Solar excellence in that number of charms, you should probably rethink how you're writing charm trees.

For me the iconic Solar Charm tree in 3e is Melee. Broadly useful, overwhelmingly strong, able to translate skill with a weapon into a variety of battlefield roles (ranged attack, defense against magical assaults etc). It's power is both raw, potent and refined, but not too esoteric or vague. It's theme is aesthetically connected to the Sun but not to the extent that it means you must play a glowing Sun warrior.

I think that tells you exactly the kind of thing a Solar should be doing with a weapon aka displaying overwhelming excellence with it, but it isn't... weird? It's not Martial...

Cool, thanks. I've been very curious to see how they work for a while, especially what with the rumours of the whole Yin and Yang mote pools, with Charms having different effects depending on the mote source on occasion....

Using Flying Time Technique, if he goes before someone else in the initiative he gets +2 to auto-successes on the attack roll, and if he's in a Shadowland he can use Necromantic Potence to add an additional 3 successes. Accursed Wraith Body is double 9s on any combat roll, and doesn't cost motes but rather initiative, which is both good and bad. So in a Shadowland he can be adding +5 auto successes to an attack roll if he goes before you (and his JB is pretty good, e can boost it with auto-successes, plus Flying Time Technique gives him +3 to his initiative for determining who goes when). He's...

Yeah, you did exactly what I did, I need a powerful Deathlord-y/Abyssal-y bad guy, so I'll take the Nephwrack and combine it with the Abyssal QC! It worked for me. I expected the same problem as Lioness covered in the above post, namely that you need Onslaught Penalty negators or you'll die to proper Solar combatants, and also you need extra-attacks. To make that work, I just straight up gave my bad guy a few Essence 1 Solar Melee Charms, namely One Weapon Two Blows, Peony Blossom Technique (which I adjusted so if you dealt actual damage, you could trigger it reflexively, not by discharging your...

Are we likely to see a Getimian antagonist at some point? Maybe in the monthly stuff? I know the mechanics are presumably a long way off, but we also know that the antagonists in the core book have placeholder charms and excellencies, and I'm pretty curious as to see what they are like thematically. Also this has probably been answered somewhere, but where are Getimians in the very nebulous power curve of Ex3? I'm guessing around the level of Sidereals in a different way, but I thought I'd ask.

replied to Nocturnals fans - what do you consider iconic?
I don't really mind that it doesn't come up much, though I think it could have been played with in the Stamina Charms a bit more. I think it's just a cool element to them. It makes them feel very unique.

I loved their unique aging mechanic.

It was very flavorful, even if it didn't come up much.

I think I like the idea that Lookshy has a powerful God, or group of Gods, of Mortal Warriors, and a number of very capable artificers, and they put this together to develop Armour for the Gunzosha, mortal warriors who sacrifice their vitality to the God and in return receive power through the cunning channelling ability of the Dragon-crafted suits they wear.

For this, they are granted station and wealth, their families are elevated, and they receive elaborate and devoted funerals with ancestor cults following their death. In a militarist society like Lookshy, being of the Gunzosha...

It is insane how dangerous it is for the wearer though.

I never liked that element. It seems pretty stupid. And also too universal to Creation. I'd prefer it if it was this Lookshyan thing and not really something anywhere else.

  • I like it! Very cool! Powerful but not too powerful, although of course beware that one can use excellencies on the roll, so it could be over very quick!

Reminds me of the Conan cartoon, you know where he quests to release his family from the "curse of living stone" as cast by the cruel wizard... Rathamon? Yeah.
