you are right, can't believe I miss that. Then again, I feel kinda flattered that I unknowingly developed a rule of almost official material level lol....

I think Soak is just fine, specially after Errata, the real problem is with Piercing weapons which divide your soak by half. A fix could it be that Pierce weapons reduce soak a total amount equal to your Strength score ? ( makes sense cuz no matter how sharp and piercing a weapon if you have noodle arms it will not penetrate a breastplate )...

But .... the 5 favored abilities for solars is also a first edition thing, together with the experience cost of charms. So is the essence surchange using charms that are not from your element....

That's blasphemy ! A game without the Locust Crusade it's not a game !. Lol, you are right, thought in retrospective I've always allowed to play Alchemicals as a point of start or later in the game with the assumption of the locust crusade already happened. Maybe I'm too permissive ?...

Not saying they should die in one hit. Just saying the solution to dying in one hit doesn't appeal to my sense of immersion. There are many other RPGs systems that allow you to have an interesting combat with direct damage and more immersion without 2e's lethality, but without 3e's loose of combat realism.
The question I make myself about it, is it due to d10's limitations, or is it due to the creators not thinking of another fix and just going for that one ? I like to think that the answer is the second and exalted can be both immersive and balanced....

I once had an eclipse recover and repair his ancient flying city. The history was that he got the consensus of the deliberative to have his flying city, but since he was usually opposing them he had to achieve this by making it completely unarmed and just equipped to be a mobile commerce nexus for flying ships around creation. His original plan was to create severe weaponry and arm his city AFTER he got it build, so he was building the weaponry at different points of his states in creation, after that he would use his improvised directional titan to aid an alliance of tributaries against the deliberative,...

I know, and that's exactly my problem with it, I know beforehand that attack I'm rolling will make no damage, yet I have to describe my character believing he will make damage, It gnaws away my realism and immersion of the rol.
It's pretty similar to the same thing social fu did wrong , in it's own way, it did the same with the realism of the conversation by making turns on a debate or stating that every form of conversation was a debate, it took away realism and immersion on the role, that's pretty much why I throw it all away on my games.

    True, then again, in...

Mmmm, and how dumb is the solar ? Is he completely ignorant of another forms of warfare besides attacking ? Or is he a genius mastermind of combat but nothing else ?
Cuz if it's the second he could always use a false flag attacks to drive neighbor kingdoms unwillingly at his side, forcing them to be at their command or die at the hands of the ghost flag enemy that attacked them.
Now if he is too honorable for that, or looking for an alternative to fighting a loosing war, then, I guess it's reincarnation for him.
Another option would be burned land tactics, where he would let...

You say it like it's a bad thing !
Lol, but seriously, as long as it's leader lives ,and it's mostly undefeated, a culture of only invading and plundering can survive, just look at the huns, they were all nomads who basically stole chinese culture and wares production and everyone's else through force. So a warrior without administration skills, can be an extremely efficient and good king capable of sustaining a vast and powerful empire .... now that his people is happy under his rule ... that's a complete different matter....

yeah, but solars get 5 favored abilities, and got no problem except 2 XP points more learning other charms. So, a dawn can learn how to be an efficeint bureaucrat just as fast as a DB can, he also has more powerful effects for that and he doesn't have to waste more power using them. On the other hand, a dragon blood of a certain element can't use presence or bureaucracy without more essence ( that's harder for them ) and without much more XP expenditure....

replied to 2e: Biggest problems fix ?
Well, my biggest reason is because playing anything else than a DB and a Solar in 3e is pretty much homebrew, my group doesn't usually play solars, so it's DBs or nothing. And I'm one lazy guy to homebrew that much. Dunno if there are already books for those characters out ? It's been a while since I've read anything from 3e.

Also, and, this is my personal issue with 3e, is that although it fixes many of 2e's problems, despite the craft system but as Wizard said it's easily fixable, I just cannot force myself to like the combat system, sure it's way less broken than the previous...

    Point taken lol.

It is material differences. Then again, you would assume that the chosens of the god of perfection would be better at leading than others.
That's also why I added she wasn't that powerful as the celestial, not better ruler than them.
It's kinda of an strategic RPG way of thinking, when you don't have enough resources you have to make choices about what to sacrifice to get things done. Same thing happen to her, being resources = to power.

And seriously can one make a comment here without having an argument about which...

Well, Personally I do see them as good guys, and portray them as so. Sure some of them are corrupted bureaucrats and soldiers but not ALL of them.
Most of them just want to make creation a safe place for everyone, even the empress. She tried to keep the whole world together however she could, sure, she had to make some very ''evil'' decisions, because she isn't as powerful as a celestial and her exaltation wasn't designed to rule, but despite everything she saved the world and kept it together. So yes, in my book, DBs are good guys. Specially the ones in the realm....

    2e: Biggest problems fix ?

As we all know, the 2e game mechanics is greatly flawed. So I made this post so anyone can share their own favorite fixes for it. In my opinion 2e's biggest flaws are paranoia combat, and social fu. So, can we fix it ?!, well probably not but we can at least make it less bad.
For paranoia combat I had a kinda complicated fix.
I introduce an anime-sque system. As far as I've understand it, paranoia combat goes around two axis, mote efficiency and insta death.
So, to fix insta death I simply multiply the effects of Ox Body technique adding HPs to the game, so a solar OBT gives...

  • Well, first off, let me say I love that Drizzt reference lol.
Sorry to sound insisting but, cliche is an overused word as of today. People use it as a disqualificative and as something inherently bad. I've seen many cliches like travel back in time to fix things been used in extremely original and fresh ways, that I haven't seen used before ( like for example Tales of Demons and Gods, also big part of the Wuxia genre goes around the cultivation cliche ) . So, just because something is a cliche, it doesn't necessarily makes it bad, nor unoriginal. I'm estimating that it will come the day...

  • No, that's not what I'm saying at all, being a PC isn't what it makes a character interesting. Being a PC is what makes a character a protagonist ( not necesarily all protagonist are PC, but all PC are protagonists ).
So the realm and the Shogunate shouldn't have existed for putting that many DBs in the same bag ? I think it's a little exagerated to say that just because a person shares some ideologies and is in the same organization as other people they are all the same person or are not individuals. Take for example the Red Cross. Most of the people there are heroes in a more modern sense...

What can I say dude, it's a pretty common thing for a protagonistic character to be manipulated into something.

And I get what you are saying, but , the moment a player characer starts playing out a DB, it stops being someone's pet, and starts getting that much deserved individualism we were talking about back there. There are ways to escape solar brainwashing through plot and other ways around it, but you need to be a Player Character or a plot convergence to do...

  • No no, I don't, as I've said before, there were many free DBs on the 1st Age 2ed setting. Entire gentes refused to serve their Solar's reincarnations. But Solars from the first millenia after the PW were extremely powerful, those were the ones who had a tight hold on the gentes they were given.

Well I disagree there, a game that has all ''classes'' balanced so anyone can pick any race or class they like and still have fun together, so that a human can be on the same level as the doom race created from the ashes of titans and dragon fire with the power of...

  • Well, they were 3, Saibok Gauto who remains a loyal soldier primordial war survivor, he was essence 9-8 if I remember right.
Then the other two were essence 5, one a DB in the Deliberative Armada who remained loyal to the solars, because he knew they were needed to protect creation. He also was considering murdering one of his children cuz she didn't exalted and he was worried that would ruin his military career.
And the other was Anjei who was literally a slave. They are in the end fo Dreams of the First Age Lords of Creation supplement.

  • Well, I get what you're saying, but I think that you have too high standards for 2ed then, I remember a few character DBs with that mindset with essence 5 lol.

Then again, protagonism is a weird think to talk about that's most of it in the GM of the game and in the kind of story you're playing. The power level and capacity of it seems a little irrelevant to that in my opinion. A Player character DB doesn't have to be any less protagonist than a Solar, on certain kind of games.
Dragon Bloods have always been the numberless kinds of exalted , there can be as many dragon blood...

  • Well I will not, and can't, argue that the social combat system of 2ed is good, it was BAD. I see what they were trying to do, make a system which allows to actually convince others instead of conversation being merely plot lines. But they did it wrong.
I'm talking more about the fluff of how 2ed portrays DBs. Also you cannot convince everyone of everything, since their motivation protects them from many things.

So, why shouldn't the beings created to be the soldiers of the solars, not be at their command ?
