I mean, his cabinet literally draws in and holds all the Celestial Exaltations that aren't being drawn away by some other incredible force (like a Monstrance). That sounds like it would be inherently pretty wondrous. Exaltations, even as discrete things (which I know isn't a terribly popular depiction in this forum) are still shining beacons of power formed from the pure holiness and purpose shining within each of the Incarnae. Sounds like being the cabinet and custodian of that is going to be pretty wondrous by definition.

Although I'm sure there are suitable things you can do to...

As much as starting a business or renegotiating with Fifteen Fingers Liu is probably the smartest short-term option and most in line with our existing skill set, I am not voting for those - my vote is going towards Serve the Master. There's a lot to learn, and the arcane arts (even the ones that aren't so bright and pretty) can bring in quite a bit of money along with giving us our own chance of having something resembling personal strength. Additionally, while the job itself is clearly pretty dangerous, we've got good evidence that it won't be quite as risky as a regular Necromancer's apprenticeship...

  • Just a minor thing, but in the 0-3 Limit track for being human, you only state that there's a Perception+Awareness roll, not what it's actually for (though I can guess it's to tell that the Fabulist isn't quite human).

Thematically, well, aside from my pedantry about what does and doesn't count as making somebody Exalted as opposed to a different class of being, I'm quite fond of this. Thematically at least, it carries a lot of potential. I am curious what unique directions you take their mechanical abilities, though - how will their human side tamper with their Fair Folk powers to...

replied to How does every go about making homebrew
I only usually do homebrewing to correct something that I see as being off, which means I usually have a clear vision of what needs to change. Like, in 2e, I found the idea of Deathlords having all Solar and Abyssal Charms ridiculous and boring, because it both required having an avenue open that they explicitly lost (Exalted Charms without Exaltation? Howsabout no?) and gave no real means for the Abyssals to make a choice between trying to emulate and surpass them in their own area or trying to carve out their own path. Likewise, I liked the hints that Deathlords are more or less just very powerful...

  • Ah. Hm. Okay, I wasn't considering the element of what amounts to torture and horror porn and how a lot of those elements would make players uncomfortable, I guess I got a bit "darkness induced audience apathy" about it and didn't pay what I saw as wasted word space much mind. That makes sense.

It's also worth noting, as far as the names of Martial Arts Charms and stuff, that the Charms themselves are actually typically fairly basic. The techniques with the cool names that flash across the screen/page more seem like Martial Arts Combos than just the individual Charms.

  • I don't understand why the first few chapters of Infernals piss people off this much (aside from the weird implicit assumption that the Infernal Exalted themselves could never ever be good people, that was indeed a big problem). I never read it as a genuine attempt to drum up sympathy for the Yozis, anymore than I saw the Abyssals book drumming up sympathy for the Neverborn. They were just doing what they do every book - portraying a side from its own perspective.

Maybe nobody else gives a shit about how the Yozis feel, but the Yozis and their servants give a shit how the Yozis feel,...

Sealing the Heart's Light (2e Abyssal Charm, PEACH)

Hey! So in my upcoming campaign, one of the players is planning to play an Abyssal for whom Integrity and Intimacies play a central role. And while she almost certainly won't start with it, she was talking to me about a Charm she's interested in developing down the line for some potential Death Note flavored shenanigans and which I find perfectly suitable to the Abyssal theme. But I want to make sure I'm not missing anything that might be cause for pause, so I bring it to you fine Internet-folk.

So, without further adieu, I give you:

Hm. The Oathbond's Loyalty effect requires them to score more Conviction successes than the Oathbond rating to act against "the team," but doesn't seem to otherwise affect the bond itself. Which is still cool, actually, gives that potential vibe of the character being totally controlled yet still resisting attacking their companions, but then, inability to take any actions that cause any "physical, mental, or emotional harm" to your sworn group's members seems remarkably limiting towards the sorts of interactions a group of friends would normally have... Hm. Well, I'll suggest...

Ways to Bolster In-Group Intimacies (2e/2.5e)

Hey everyone! So for my upcoming campaign, my players have expressed a keen (and in my opinion weird, but I digress) interest in the idea of exploring what conflicts are formed and how their relationships are shaped by having literally supernaturally powerful bonds of friendship, but each facilitated through remarkably different lenses (as each comes from a different power set whose Charms push very different feelings forward). The issue, of course, is finding ways that all of them can actually defend their Intimacies as such, because not all Charmsets have native options for doing so.

The only issue (or at least potential issue, this might not be something everyone considers a negative) about Exaltation as an event rather than the physical soul-portion is that it undoes the justification for First Age incarnation memories, which I at least consider spectactularly awesome and thematic.

Of course, it's not too hard to swing if you assume those memories are locked deep in the upper soul (rather than within the Exaltation itself), thus the human himself can awaken those memories if he was already reincarnated from an old Solar before even being Exalted, but I'm partial...

  • Going off TVTropes, doing Exalted in a D&D clone seems like what Godbound was made for, but since I'd never heard of it until I looked it up just now, I can't go either way on recommendation. Still, if it's a class-and-level based system like most D&D clones, it's still honestly gonna do a *worse* job of preparing them for an eventual update to Exalted proper than a tweaked Fate Core would. Just my two cents anyway....

  • I'm getting so many good options. Thanks!

And uh, yeah. It's not the most steady or otherwise-likely of arrangements, haha. At least three out of the five party members are playing rebels to the primary institutions their fellow Exalted mostly align with, and I say at least because who knows what stance the Lunar will decide to have towards the Silver Pack.

Edit: Though "unlikely" is really just a flashing neon challenge to a Sidereal, anyway......

  • Fate is both significantly easier than D&D and a good bit more similar to Exalted in underlying design (being based on skills, flexible bonuses, and special quirks rather than class abilities and complex mechanical interactions, plus it's narrative rather than simulationist so it's easier to emulate the magic wuxia over-the-topness of Exalted). It's also a lot more abstract and designed for high-action play like Exalted is, which means it can much more easily be tailored to work like Exalted does than D&D, which I honestly can't see being made to work like Exalted *at all*. D&D is...

  • Are these kids experienced with other RPGs? If not, I might recommend using Fate Core built to emulate Exalted, rather than Exalted itself. Once they're older and seem more capable of handling the complexity, you can update the system, and you'll benefit from them already being used to the themes, setting, and power level of Exalted, which are themselves potentially going to be hurdles for particularly the 10 year old to wrap their head around.

  • Doesn't seem much worse than a bunch of Solars to me. Just a wider variety of potential abilities on the GM end, and from the Pattern Spider end it's more concerning how much time they spend outside Fate than what Exaltation they have, since all Charms screw destiny anyway.

    To me as well....

replied to Does creation have tectonic plates?
I like the "because magic" explanation for most things in Creation, personally, but not necessarily on a scale the players can do anything about. "Natural" earthquakes and volcanic eruptions (as opposed to those a god caused due to anger or something, which do still happen) are caused because all the land mass of Creation puts such a heavy toll on Fate. The natural shifting of the earth and pulsing of dragon lines, plus all the individuals in the caverns and subterranean sub-worlds of Creation, mean that there's actually a far larger amount of the Loom dedicated to keeping...

  • I figure they're WAY easier to include as NPCs (as allies, supporting cast, and antagonists) in a larger story about the Exalted. Hell, I've done it several times. I'm talking more about actually centering the game on them, which typically means making them the primary player character race.
