I think a key factor that made the dark ages dark is the reduced scale of travel. Under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Pax Romana, trade from Western Europe to Italy was reasonably safe and widespread. Once Rome fell, the safety of the roads declined dramatically and Continental trade became much more dangerous. So if the Blessed Isle became several countries, with contentious borders plagued by highway men who deserted the from latest border skirmish, you have the sort of isolationism that allows those countries to develop their own cultures in different directions. In contrast to the Realm,...

    10) A bit of an interdepartmental rivalry has developed between the botany department and the relic restoration department due to a dispute over the provenance of a certain metallic bonzai specimen. Students from both sides are engaged in escalating tensions. Was a warstrider workshop wrecked by a sudden infestation of sentient kudzu?

  • Oh man, if you're in to that sort of thing, this is a perfect excuse for the Scarlet Empress to secretly be a Solar instead of a dragonblood. Maybe there was a Solar tomb near the Sword of Creation. Loyal Realm soldier wanders in, saves the day, then fabricates a story about how her fictitious sworn brotherhood was all slain. Amid so much chaos who could prove otherwise?

  • To me, the hardest thing about reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms was just keeping track of the various names that all refer to the same person. Every character seems to have like 4 names and the usage depends on their relationship with the other party in any given piece of dialogue. This is exacerbated by several strategy meetings where two or three characters in the room will refer to dozens of other characters "in the field."

  • Sounds like the first generation of returned Solars might be more like Indiana Jones than Musashi. So that's fun. The realm might have a lot more interest in the first age ruins in the Scavenger Lands than they did previously. You never know when someone is going to fall into a hole and climb out as a sorcerous god-king. There might also be a higher concentration of Solar tombs around Mt. Meru on the Blessed Isle where they can be better guarded. That might lead to some daring Dynasts who failed to exalt as Dragon-blooded breaking into the tombs as a last ditch effort to prove themselves. Then...

  • That's true, but they still might not want you causing trouble in their cities, and the Wyld Hunt is supposed to protect the realm from all manner of supernatural threats....

  • It's a really high percentage so fun to animate all the mayhem. I am not sure of the exact breakdown of practical vs CG (besides it would spoil some of the magic if I told you ). It takes a ton of people. If you watch the credits for the vfx section, you will see a ton of names scroll by. And even then, not everyone gets a credit (sadly there is only so much space on the reel). Think mid to high hundreds but less than a thousand....

  • Another drawback of using a sorcerous working to buff your stats, is it might mark you indelibly to those with supernatural senses. Maybe your body radiates supernatural energy to those who can sense essense. You might even attract the attention of the wyld hunt who assume you're a new type of anathema before even realizing you are also a Solar.

  • Our team was responsible for every shot that featured the green monsters, most of the battle scenes on the wall, and the Kai Feng city battle. Plus a ton of set extension work around the Valley. It was a pretty fun show, because the director gave us a lot of freedom.

  • Hey guys, I worked on this movie and I do think it's worth seeing. Like others have said it gives a cool visual reference for how the dragon blooded might resist a seige of demons or wyld-beasts. The balloon flying sequence was also pretty fun.

A lot of people have said it's too Hollywood or whitewashed but take the time to look at the credits (you can check imdb if you don't want to sit through the movie first). It was directed by an esteemed Chinese director (who also directed Hero mentioned above), shot in China, and we did the majority of the Vfx work in China and Singapore. Halfway...
