  • I think a recommended range of 6-12 is sufficient, with a note that they shouldn't all be in the same location. Storytellers already have a wide berth when it comes to Darkspawn, so they can make the crew as large and powerful as they want. It all hinges on what the players can handle when they reach the encounter....

  • So, let me see if I understand this. When Vold fuses with his ship, he turns into a Size 5 humanoid with his legs/lower tentacles connected to his ship (or something like that). He can move around normally, and automatically teleports to a location not occupied by players upon "death". The requirement of the Ran being destroyed to truly defeat him if he transforms sets up something of an equipment gate for players. That said, I can see a Storyteller urging their players to initiate a tactical retreat after a successful fight, leading to a more conclusive round two later.

  • Vent0 Sorry about the weird tone of my last post. I was trying to write in some sort of character, but it came out looking dismissive of your idea.

In retrospect, those two concepts are different enough to work as two separate technologies. Yours is a signature that appears on people who have already used magic and must be found after its application, and mine is a signal that pings upon phylactery usage. Both are fallible (I would imagine that a Veiled Palace would jam the signal of my idea, in addition to all its other potential failings up to that point), and yours parallels...

  • Dual Identity would probably put a stop to most thingsā€¦

So, perhaps we're going about this the wrong way.

You can't reliably track a Princess because the universe registers her as two different people. But could you track her phylactery?

It would be be considerably more difficult for a Hunter to get his hands on a Princess phylactery than just shooting her with a(n ultimately useless) tracing marker, but it could be more effective.

I don't have a name for this technology or tactic, but it would require physical possession of a phylactery for...

  • Leliel Nailed it.

However, there's one last lore question before we can really move on to the mechanical nitty-gritty.

    What's his Transformation?

The Draug seems pretty well stocked up on minions, and he has a clear Homefield Advantage if he can get you inside Ran. So... perhaps, to gain more power in a pinch, he needs to sacrifice all of it, fusing with at least his entire current crew and/or part of his boat to pound his most hated enemies into sand with devastating blows.

Or he could just turn into a big ol' demonic sea monster thing. Probably...

  • Ack. I realized that, forgot about it, and wrote the post in a weird tone. The description Dusksage gave for the backstory is far enough removed from what the corebooks say to be perfectly acceptable in a Hunter context.

As for Calignes, my understanding is that anyone can perform a ritual to gain a Caligo, but doing so and using one are both Breaking Points. To reiterate something Dreaming Cat said, the Darkness offers a wide variety of easy dark magic, it just kind of sucks compared to what other WoD magic users can do....

  • @Dusksage
Dude. There's some real merit in that write-up. The point about there being only eight city states may need to be changed, as the corebooks imply that nobody really knows the real number.

  • To tack on one last bit about generic Darkspawn, some of them are just Darkness given form, like the ones who are usually sleeping in the Dark World and any that are directly created by a Dethroned. Their resemblance to normal ex-living creatures is likely just the All-Consuming Darkness recycling some of the forms it has already stolen from the world. The Vocation version has a few Alhambra-specific Darkspawn who embody this, right down to using limited speech just to screw with people. Taking that into consideration, some Darkspawn may be totally resistant to rehabilitation due to having...

  • I'm not exactly certain about where in the document you picked that up from. By default, killing Darkened people is greatly frowned upon by everyone except the Court of Storms, mainly due to the fact that they can be redeemed at that point. In general, the only beings that Princesses will always try to kill on principle are Darkspawn, Mnemosynes, Cataphractoi, and Dethroned, and even then (according to the Dream version, at least) they need to do it with noble intentions (or Tempesta Charms) to actually reduce the sum of Darkness in the world. Once something becomes a creature...

  • The Sin-Eaters' stereotypes on other templates contain some of my favourites.

The Forgotten stereotype on mortals is quite good: "Don't risk it. It's a mug's game, man."
The Torn have another good take on mortals: "Just stay behind me. Stay behind me, and don't look too hard. And please, shut the #*%@ up."
However, the crown jewel of the set, and possibly the entire World of Darkness, is the Prey stereotype on Mages: "That's cheating."

Half of the stereotypes from the Court of Mirrors in Princess: The Hopeful are really good (I...

  • Master Aquatosic No, but since they can feed on Light in the place of normal food, Darkspawn prefer to go where Tainted Places (Light can't get a foothold in them and leaks into the Dark World) and Nobles (DINNER SERVED WITH DESSERTā€¦ and they're ancient enemies to boot!) are plentiful.

Darkspawn can feel the Light leaking out of a Light-attuned character, whether it be from a Beacon, a Sworn with a bit of Queen-inspired Inner Light, or a Noble with their Inner Light gradually growing. This doesn't mean they will automatically hunt down Light-attuned characters and kill them, just...

  • Cataphractoi can also perform Transformations of their own. These vary wildly, but are always bad news.

Just want to give a couple reminders about falling to Belief 0 and the Dethroned:

First of all, while a Princess that hits Belief 0 due to Hunter meddling is likely to be reminded of her former supernatural status and attempt a Transformation, this isn't a certainty. While a Belief 0 Princess almost always invites trouble (apparently, Light and Dark-attuned characters are drawn to them), they can also just be zombie-like versions of themselves, and will default to...

  • I walk in waving a flag made out of a long cardboard tube and a "Magical Girl Raising Project" poster. Several security guards grab me and dropkick me into the Punishment Hole. As I fall out of sight, I scream "It was alriiiiiiight!".

I concur that having a large group of magical girls acting under different codes of ethics and desires is a much more interesting character-driven story than a rehash of Madoka's plot. It did its thing, it was fresh the first time, and if the next season ever comes out, it seems posed to do something a bit more grounded in character...

  • When it comes to editing, more cooks can make the soup better, if not just finished sooner. Jump on in. If you feel hesitant to make a permanent change, switch your editing permissions to the "Suggestion" mode by clicking on the "Editing" button in the top right corner. I'll be using it for more complicated revisions, so additional input will be necessary....

  • Hey there, everybody. I came as quickly as I could after the call for help went out. My most prominent skills are writing and editing (especially editing), and I'd love to provide assistance.

I have read both of the P:tH corebooks and the existing supplement, but my knowledge of H:tV is very limited. I have gleaned the personalities of the compacts and conspiracies from various sources online (this thread included), but I am clueless about their systems.

I'm going to be busy for the next three or four days, but once I'm available I'll blaze a path of edits through any...
