Is the same true for effects which change dice of raw damage into successes (where they do not explicitly say that these are post-soak successes)?...

[+] What house rules do you use?

I had the impression, that this topic was already somewhere in the forum, but now I cannot find it (If I was right, feel free to delete or merge it).

Tell me about you houserules. Especially the smaller ones, one so minuscule that you wouldn't bother mentioning it in other threads. Why you introduced them? Do they fix something you find a bug or do they intentionally change the tone or scope of the game. You can list just some of them which work particularly well.

This is a [+] thread, notation borrowed from another forum, so we generally simply do not criticise other's...

    1. How do successes added to your raw withering damage interact with soak? Suppose that some effect adds 3 successes to your withering damage roll (at least one), your raw damage is 15, and that enemy's soak is 16. Do you bypass soak? What happens if the soak is set to be 18? (The last question is because I'd be incline to accept 1 success = 2 soak in which case, you would still be able to get some withering damage bypassing soak)....

Apologies for being patronising. I know that was probably really irritating.

I'm sorry if my post looked patronising.

My point is: it's a misconception to think that there were two empires. There were multiple emperors of course, but people of the era clearly thought of them as rulers of the same entity.

You know, what formally happened in 476 was that rulership over Italia was oficially assumed by the Eastern emperor., so this tells a lot about their perspective....

This is tangential to the discussion, but you're looking at a wrong place.

The centre of Roman civilisation around V-VIth century was already farther to the east. We sometimes use to think of Constantinopol as some kind of fan-made version of Rome, but definitely they thought of themselves as completely regular Romans. So, when that remote nowhere of Britannia ceased to be a part of the Empire, it was not a major tragedy.

And in the east, well, much of the civilisation of Rome was taken over by the newly emergent exploding Arabic empire. Afterwards the Roman empire started...

Chausse What I will write is borderline trivial, but keep in mind that what is a reasonable rule in rpg game is extremely group-dependent. I would houserule things one way or another depending on who I'm playing with (even before taking into considerations whether group is ok with the houserules).

So, speaking from practical experience: in my group, nerfing supernal went just fine. We are very happy with the houserule, it was a good decision, and getting access to Essence 3 charms was an extremely satisfying moment for players. So this nerf is not broken in the sense that the game...

I really think that this is due to a strong WoD heritage still present in Exalted. The system gave huge freedom in creating your character, but at the same time simply assumed that you will not abuse it. If players would bring characters with Dexterity 5, combat Ability 5, I'd definitely frown upon them and discuss it. In Exalted, however, this feels very in-genre. After all, this is a kung-fu movie. It's ok that everyone is a martial arts master.

However that, combined with the writers commitment to the given descriptions of skills (they clearly tried to stick to the described scale...

Exactly, In my current group, one player who used to play serious tournament chess, is a decent bridge player and generally enjoys dealing with mechanical aspects of games, actually had to made characters for two of the other. Then, we had to carefully explain to these two players, step-by-step, and between sessions what these characters can do. Honestly, I wouldn't say that the process has already finished.

And, honestly, I think that this is mostly fault not so much of the mechanic as of the editing of the corebook. What do I mean by this? The game is heavy, actually I'd say it's...

To me, definitely the most powerful (and flavourful) are Eclipse abilities..Diplomatic immunity and sanctifying oaths seem both examples of something that could be high-Essence charms. They are applicable in so many circumstances and guarantee that you essentially always get a chance to try getting things done in a diplomatic way.

I donl't think there is particular risk of overshadowing Dawns in 3rd edition to be honest. Their caste abilities are solid and, contrary to the second edition, there is no particular reason not to choose Dawn if you want to focus on martial prowess. If...

I probably wasn't clear enough. I meant that upon successful attack, you would loose only the Initiative you actually used (say, +1, to stay coherent with the rules for Gambits). Under the current rules, you essentially have to "pay" with your full Initiative in order to attack, which gets refunded if the attack happens to fail.

DrLoveMonkey I mean, the intent was for a high Initiative advantage to be in more stable position. Currently, high Initiative opponents don't quite feel to me as if they has upper hand, but rather like a ticking bomb. But that's a good point that...

Suppose I am a lunar with Unchained Monster Death-Rage. How do I lose a fight?

Of course, I can be put in a cage or my opponents can flee and leave me dying, Putting aside similar scenarios, can I loose a fight where already put in that state?

I understand that the intended use is mostly that you don't loose your literally last battle which is cool from the narrative perspective, but the charm seems rather prone to some shenanigans, where I intentionally incapacitate myself early on (say, by setting a fire around in the middle of the fight), then fight in the "immortal...

What breaks if I allow decisive attacks to be made I using less than full Initiative, as opposed to always go all-in, as per the current rules? This one bit of rules always strikes me as rather odd. I understand that we lose some of the usual cinematic feel of current decisive, but it sees to me to automatically increase tactical depth of the combat....

Increasing Strength Exercise explicitly allows the character to increase their "Strength score". It has been clarified somewhere that this does not affect caps for dice pools. What does it affect? Specifically:

    1. Does the increased Strength increase withering damage?
    2. Does it affect how many dice of withering damage can be added by Fire and Stones Strike (it explicitly mentions "Strength score", literally the same words are used as in ISE).
    3. Does it affect the maximal number of attacks in Iron Whirlwind Attack or Invincible Fury of the Dawn?...

This is exactly how we are portraying Exaltation in our current campaign. Spirits, some of the fair folk, and similar beings (incidentally along with first-age defense infrastructure and robot-servants) immediately and instinctively recognise PC's as the same people that bear the Exaltation in the past, calling them by long-forgotten names and mentioning their deeds.

Not exactly canon but it really creates a properly "mythic" atmosphere and, as a side effect, greatly helps to remind players how cool their characters are. Actually, in this campaign we are exactly playing...

DrLoveMonkey As I said, in our game we heavily nerfed supernal and introduced some custom charms to widen power gaps, so we're actually fine.

I generally agree that you can feel the character developement much better in case of terrestrials, but it's precisely Solars who invoke this kind of narrative the most: freshly returning rulers of free world who don't yet know what they can do.

Ultinately, I think it is simply a trap in design to treat "Solars are the best" statement in too literal way. I would indeed prefer if they were strictly speaking potentially...

As I wrote in that thread, we houseruled supernal to allow you only to choose charms one Essence higher than normally. We are 14 sessions into the campaign and it works fine. This means that you reach Essence 3, where the most juicy charms are, after 10 sessions. This was an extremely satisfying moment.

Possibly, it's not the best idea if you are realistically planning only a short campaign. My current group is extremely commited, but typically it's hard for me to have even a five-session campaign. Then I would think twice whether I want to get rid of the supernal, since that can...

Yes, sure. But the aesthetics of sorcery is very distinct and doesn't necessarily fit your character. Some of them (Essence 8+) seem a bit too powerful and utilitarian at the same time to become sorcery proper, so I have no problem with certain redundancies....
