The source of my confusion is this: The rules for traveling in the Hedge imply that you don't need to know exactly the direction you're going, since space and direction do not exist in the same way in the Hedge as they do in the mundane world. In fact, on page 200, navigation is described the same way whether your declared intent is, "I want to take a shortcut to San Francisco" or "I want to find the nearest Goblin...
