  • And herein lies the problem, because Martial Arts can be combined with each other and your native trees. Example:

Let's take SPSitV and Devil Tiger, we'll make an experienced Solar, so essence 2, twenty charms, Night Caste with Supernal Stealth.

SPSitV: Gathering Light Concentration, Shining Starfall Execution, Single Point Shining Into the Void Form, Fatal Stroke Flash

Devil Tiger: Naked Fang Draw, Double Attack Technique, Steel Devil Strike, Steel Devil Form, Dual-Slaying Stance, Empty Mind Strike

Stealth: Blinding Battle Feint, Guardian Fog...

  • Depends on your definition of better/worse.

Obviously melee/archery/thrown are also martial arts, just accessible to all exalt types. I also believe it is inevitable that MA will be better for some, such as Sidereals and their mirror-splat, if only because of access to Sidereal martial arts which is their 'thing'.

Anyway, there will be a lot MA and the sheer variety and flexibility to tailor (and flavor) a character's fighting style will certainly always give them the edge, for me anyways. As for whether it is better mechanically than the native combat abilities depends...

Yup, making them truly separate things would be counter-productive. Indeed some wuxia merits might require them, as well as evocations for artifact weapons. After all, those are part of the wuxia genre as well. Well, I'm happy, I must say. This looks like it will be fun to play, and it shouldn't unbalance the setting......

The chi gathered would work to power all Techniques, you don't have to gather it for a specific Technique. So, take a gather chi action, build up a pool, and use it to power your Techniques. It decays in the same manner as sorcerous motes, as in if you're using them, you lose one per turn.

As for Exalted with a mote pool having access to chi gathering, I am personally going for just saying no because they are already using a vastly superior and upgraded version. After all adding propellers to a jet fighter doesn't work.

Providing an extra mote pool for Exalts just seems...

replied to You Don't Have to Join the Silver Pact…
Hopefully characters like Ma-Ha-Suchi and Raksi will have a bit more nuance to them but I really don't mind those kind of NPC's representing the legacies and sins of the past which will have to be overcome in some manner (doesn't have to be with the application of your favorite artifact weapon). The same with equivalent elders of the Dragon Blooded and Sidereal splats.

I consider the Silver Pact more as loose alliance running on favor-trading and mutual support than a policy maker on a grand scale. If there are gatherings/conclaves/moots they concern themselves with local affairs....

Obviously mortals learn charms at the terrestial level in the exalted setting! As for requiring an uncanny trait, I wouldn't mind, as it is not uncommon in the genre, but it's certainly not always there. Sometimes it is 'just' that talented prodigy, or the princess unsatisfied with being quiet and looking pretty. However, it's not for everybody, as it is in the wuxia genre. I was thinking a defining principle or tie to justify the necessary drive to push yourself beyond the normal limits.

Ah, yes, that works even better! Unlocking all charms of an essence level and style...

Hmm, I think the basis for what you want already exists in Ex3. True, Solars have a Supernal so can access the essence 5 charms in their chosen field from the start, but that stuff only comes alive when you have the essence to fuel it properly. Another thing is that competence in several charm trees that only ridiculous amounts of xp can buy, especially if they synergize is very, very scary. All the raw power you need already exists, the only limit is xp, motes, wp and resets actually.

So, you might have fewer (semi-)perfects, but if you have them all/a few for them, and perhaps some...

Hmm, yeah, especially the numbers for the Wulin Training and xp cost need a good critical look to see how they pan out. But yes, exalts shouldn't find it attractive as charms and motes are much more practical than constantly worrying about your chi to pull off your techniques, so making the xp cost punishing isn't really necessary. And yes, lowering the overall Ambition and being able to use finesse scale is definitely a good idea.

It was actually using the workings system to unlock Techniques, Sect Secrets and god knows what else is what made me look at it to use for wuxia stuff....

started a topic The Society of Rivers and Lakes

The Society of Rivers and Lakes

Something I was playing around with was a mortal wuxia campaign and I wanted a bit more granularity and depth, so, here's an attempt to bring back enlightened mortals, using the Sorcerous Initiation framework. The initiation on offer is a general 'proof of concept', and not for a specific Sect. Obviously there is room for customization here, just as with the Sorcerous equivalent.

Mortals benefit most from this, by design, though I suppose even exalts might benefit, especially from the 'Wulin Training'.

    So, PEACH away!

The Society of Rivers and Lakes:...

Yes, frame your scenes. If the scene you're playing out is about the assassin getting out after the kill, start right at that point. Players need to stop the assassin from escaping, or if it's a pc, needs to escape. Simple as that.

Now, for a mortal PC's, Let's frame the scene to include the assassination as well. And we are one of the world's greatest (mortal) snipers of course!

5 wits, 5 awareness with applicable specialty and fast reflexes. Describe getting into an exciting vantage point and taking aim and some 'bullet-time' cinematic effects to get a level 2 stunt...

replied to The Empress : Who Was She?
The Scarlet Empress is gone, so it's not really that important.

That said, she must have been a singularly exceptional individual. Not even taking taking control of the RDG into account, she stayed on top of the food-chain for an insanely long time. Not only that, but she made it so that everything in her domain revolves around her, all while contending with ambitious offspring and the meddling of the Sidereals, up to and including Chejop, and likely Lunars, exigents and who knows what else, and mostly getting the better of them. Well, up till her disappearance obviously, which I...

replied to Mandatory Charms for Starting Characters
As stated above, let the pitch of the campaign and the character concepts guide you.

Obviously if you want to be combat-capable useful charms are onslaught negators, ox-bodies and something to boost withering and decisive damage and preferably something to boost initiative (though that is the least necessary component).

Once you have two of those, the rest can get away with a lot less, especially if someone is going for reflexive 'defend-other' charms but being to contribute at least something in both the social and the martial arena is always advisable.
