An interesting idea that's at least somewhat undercut with 3E's Progenitive essence concept, but I'd always had an image of a DB kingdom that basically doesn't believe in the "bloodline purity" thing.

Basically extended clans of dozens of kids in order to try to play the numbers game and assume that the more chances to Exalt, the better overall average they'll have. Of course, the progenitive essence thing kinda undermines that, but originally their problem was that when any given DB dies, their estates and so on are likely to be carved up among a dozen heirs at the least,...

So, it's mentioned the Signature DBs are going to get writeups in the DB Companion. Are we likely to see similar writeups of the Solar sigs in a hypothetical storytelling guide or similar? I remember Moerke wrote up an enormously detailed one for Perfect Soul, which I'd hardly expect similar things in official books given wordcount, but I admit to some curiosity as to the sigs, especially Shen given DBs' significant reworking of Iselsi making his situation very interesting.

  • So it'd be more along the lines of.... I forget which 2E Book it was, but there was a sidebar with like, six different options that the Emissary of Nexus could be, from "the Council of Entities has twelve people running around in identical masks" to "He's a First Age Solar that survived somehow". Or the one that provided offhand explanations for the Bull of the North that included being a Lunar, Abyssal, etc. instead of a Solar?

Because those were always some of my favorite things back in the day. You don't need to say how it is, but giving me a half dozen "how...

The precise phrasing in the core is "If successful, this creates a pact that changes the spirit into her familiar, allowing her to target it with applicable Survival Charms." And my ST was fine with it. It came up later in one of Vance's rules clarifications in the Ask The Devs threads that survival charms are supposed to apply to non-supernatural critters, but it may be the Twilight anima sidesteps it. As it was, my ST was fine with it.

This may honestly have been just a case of underestimating what they were dealing with. For reference, I'd never actually

Our group also doesn't use training times, ever since one particular experience with the system.

The basic campaign idea was "A 3rd Circle demon announces on Calibration that he's coming next Calibration to hunt you down. You have exactly one year to go from pretty much untrained Solars to being able to handle him."

Our GM started tracking time between the start and end, but we rapidly determined that raising things to the point you could take on said demon would probably involve way more than a year, especially if you can't train anything but that specific...

replied to Who will your next Dragon-Blooded PC be?
My next DB is going to be, barring any significant changes, Mnemon Galdr, who's the daughter of one of Mnemon's various daughters, well regarded from her graduation at the Cloister of Wisdom, and devout enough she would've been a monk if not for the fact that there were those awkward celibacy vows and she actually enjoys sleeping on mattresses.

Her main story hook is that her former personal maid and lover was murdered while she was off at school, and she doesn't know who did it, so she's somewhat flailing about given all her connections she made due to being actually nice to people,...

replied to Familiars – your experiences!
My Sorcerer Twilight went with a Blood Ape familiar, and with the Familiar tree applied (which I found out only after the game finished wasn't supposed to apply to supernatural familiars, whoops), he made a beast of a tank for my squishy sorcerer (who had Stamina 1 and no Ox Bodies, and thus was endangered by a stiff wind).

The reason for those Familiar charms not working on demons was evident in the last battle, where upon getting all the buffs possible up on him, said super Blood Ape proceeded to tear apart two separate heads of a Third Circle demon our GM had as the final boss...

From a more behind the scenes point of view, was the progenitive essence concept intended as a solution to those old "mass produced Dragonblooded" things that popped up from time to time?

Also, going by the comment about Ledaal Kebok Coren, is it safe to assume the only requirement for having the Dragon's Blood is basically being partially human (godblooded/demonblooded of all stripes, beastmen, etc.) and of descent from someone who does? Or is there a limit to how many generations a single DB in the family tree counts before it's literally impossible?...

So, the Precedent of Rawar was a rather interesting thing for my group, and there's a few bits here and there I still had questions on just because it leaves so many tantalizing things open.

First off, is this something that's only open to transgender Dynasts, or is it seen as a (potentially shady given they could just adopt like a normal person, other Dynasts might say) legitimate option for homosexual couples as well?

Secondly, does this affect common (if not public) opinion on the results of said union? Are there Dynasts whispering about how Ragara was a lunatic trying...

  • I don't think that Mnemon necessarily wants to be her mother's only living child, so much as she's wanting to be the dominant one. House Mnemon's writeup gives a bit more detail to a counterexample there. She's just come to the conclusion that she needs to be the dominant power with any member of her family as the only way she's going to survive.

  • Y'know, given the number of House founders that died gloriously in battle, my first thought on reading that was "Cynis died by managing to overdose despite being an elemental demigoddess of an aspect specifically known to be resistant to most normal poisons. That must be the closest thing House Cynis gets to considering something a glorious death in battle."...

So, the Iselsi writeup was really, REALLY good (I adore the phrasing of "There is no House Iselsi, just its hungry ghost"), but I do have one question on the narrative surrounding the Vendetta.

It's mentioned Iselsi intentionally tried to overthrow the Empress, and so she had the house stricken from the records and then let the other Great Houses tear it the rest of the way apart, before secretly saving the survivors of that purge and forming the current House Iselsi.

It's mentioned that the narrative the Iselsi tell themselves is of how they were betrayed by...

  • This was probably my single favorite part of the overall preview thus far as well.

I'm with you on the details thing, too. While I can appreciate "it is what it needs to be for your table", stuff like this where it just gives tantalizing hints make me want something concrete. I'm hoping there's more on this in The Realm, if it isn't in the DB book proper.

And I'm pretty sure that you're right that it was Tepet Elana in there. About the only talking points about her that weren't present was her haircut and the discount Cloud Strife buster sword of a daiklave...

I really hope so, because as someone without ready access to 1E books, a lot of stuff about the Empress' kids (like their order of birth and gender) seems either absent or really hard to find in 2E books. I didn't know Cynis was a woman until it came up in a thread here and someone gave some obscure one-sentence reference regarding a holiday she was involved in from a Compass book.

Having the Scarlet Dynasty's first family laid out in detail in one place would be immensely helpful for my DB games. ...
