There's a lot of gray in social mobility. I'd say that the hardliner might focus less on "changing your profession is an affront to the hierarchy," and more on arguments like "with your gifts, your community benefits from your physical labor," or "you've been slacking off at crate-packing, and that dereliction of your duty makes more work for everyone else," or "there are Anathema nearby and we don't have the luxury of abandoning our posts."

Ideally, a monk should recognize that a mortal will do more good for the community if they play to their...

Sounds like proof that the Realm needs to bring the perfected hierarchy to these benighted nations as quickly as possible. If fewer Anathema appear on the Blessed Isle (and I’m not sure about that), then the system clearly works, regardless of the specific reasons.

(I don’t recall anything in the books about an intentional strategy of discouraging heroism in mortals, though.)...

On the one hand, agreed. On the other hand, I provide mental healthcare to people deeply in need, and also from some perspectives I am a willing agent of the state, bound to serve its purposes and influence vulnerable people to stabilize the status quo rather than challenging it. Because I'm limited in my power over the world, I feel I must commit some evils (e.g. charging people money, encouraging people to accept small injustices) for the opportunity to do good. The more idealistic, community-minded monks might well think the same.

I wouldn't say belief is a lot less important...

Another Realm-relevant piece of setting info: the Immaculate Order explicitly exists to reinforce (and enforce) the proper social order. Monks collect intelligence, hoard academic knowledge, build community relationships, and hone their bodies into weapons so they can apply the proper pressure to fix any kind of breakdown in the social order. They may preach when that's effective, but as far as they're concerned, how layfolk act is more important than what they believe. This is why they don't generally tell layfolk that the Solar and Lunar Anathema are Exalted--it would only make the Wyld Hunt's...

replied to Science Fiction being "on the nose?"
I don’t really mind an “on the nose” story, though as with Detroit: Become Human, a story’s treatment of social issues might strike some as tone-deaf or even irresponsible. A less “on the nose” story leaves more room for discussion and debate, more opportunities to find themes you can relate to, even if you don’t agree with its central thesis.

If you’re writing to address a social issue, it can help to check with people affected by the social issue, to see if there are any big red flags before you get too deep in the story.

(Edit: Ah, I see the person...

  • I’m about 60/40 gender-wise, leaning toward playing women though I’m a man. Age is all over the map, though I think 20’s are most common. Most of my games have been by text, which does make it easier .

Does anyone have favorite examples for OP? The premise of this thread suggests they're going to have trouble finding these marvels themself....

I don't remember the details but I think the Empress intentionally gave them resources and leeway to keep them a thorn in the other Houses' sides... the same way she did for V'neef to make it a thorn in Peleps' side. If that isn't written anywhere then it's just my headcanon....

  • The problem when writing a deconstruction of a mythical or fantastic trope (such as love across lifetimes) is that it's easy to forget why people liked it to begin with. This is particularly important in a game, where we're trying to create an experience that people will enjoy, not just a world to comprehend. Solar and Lunar players want to explore complex relationships--the good and the bad--and they don't really need us to hit them over the head with the bad in a way that re-traumatizes people who've experienced abusive relationships. We can explore centuries- or millennia-long relationships...

Alas, I don't have a ton to offer. I've just seen one Judge Dee movie (Judge Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame). He's a wuxia investigator who wields an artifact mace, the ceremonial sign of his legal authority. Since I'm more familiar with extralegal investigators (like many noir heroes), it was interesting to see someone standing as the last incorruptible defender of the Law in a time of great corruption.

(I think there are problems with that perspective--see Judge Dredd--but it's undeniably appealing to me on an instinctive level.)...

Another cool thing about the Realm: they have Judge Dee-esque Magistrates empowered to investigate crimes and enforce justice. The Magistrates were all appointed personally by the Empress, and many were outcastes, or convicts offered pardons if they took the job. As a result, Magistrates are a varied bunch of legally-sanctioned Dragon-Blooded vigilantes who are primarily loyal to the Empress. They assemble teams of useful mortals called Archons to help with their investigations and tip the Magistrates off to crimes that need investigating. Of course, with the Empress gone, nobody's choosing new...

Combat against a massive opponent is more akin to fighting a modern battleship than an individual. If you CAN just smash through the deck and wreck the engines beneath, great. But if you can’t, you have range bands of territory to traverse, and places where you can really deal damage. The adventure Is getting from point A to point B with trained soldiers in the way.

If Juggernaut even notices you, it may have natural defenses capable of repelling you; it may just rely on being too tough to kill while it goes about its destructive business; or it may just roll over in hopes of crushing...

This might look like nit-picking, but the different terms refer to different versions of the religious practice. The Immaculate Philosophy is practiced in the Realm and its satrapies, while the Immaculate Faith (a more personal, less evangelical variant) is practiced in Lookshy. Other variants include the Intou Heresy (Immaculate beliefs + ancestor worship) and Prasad's Pure Way (Immaculate beliefs + Dragon-Blooded as physical gods worthy of direct worship)....

  • They might! I don't speak for them, for the record.

That said, I agree with you that it's not impossible for an external threat to arise that could challenge or overwhelm the might of the combined Exalted Host. I simply think that the Time of Tumult is named such because it comes down to how the Exalted quarrel over and manage the world they've built. Second Edition's Thousand Dooms were a movement away from the political and toward the power fantasy. But my observation so far has been that Third Edition has conspicuously avoided presenting any Ozymandias-esque glaringly-obvious problems...

  • The Exalted already beat most of those threats once, and the ones they haven’t beaten are themselves former Exalted. The only way any of them can meaningfully threaten Creation is if the Exalted weaken each other too much to sustain human civilization. Exalted violence has been the solution to so many problems that it is now Creation’s biggest problem.

(Don’t get me wrong: those threats are real. But they all represent failure states of Exalted governance and cooperation.)

  • Agreed. The biggest threat facing Creation is terminal, endless warfare among the Exalted, and the grinding loss of thousands of cultures and magical wonders. The Deathlords and Yozis are just flavors of the venality that drives genocidal vendettas, no more or less important than any other contributors....

The Scarlet Empress intentionally designed the Realm not to function without her. The satrapies all technically belong to her, but she leased them to the Great Houses (and held the sole authority to renegotiate or revoke those leases). The senate is designed to gridlock without her intervention. The Great Houses all draw their legitimacy from her bloodline, and several ascended to that status specifically to counter or replace Great Houses that no longer suited her needs. Nobody has access to the Realm Defense Grid but her. House Iselsi, supposedly ruined and destroyed, hung on as infiltrators...
