There's that word again, "balance". Balance with what exactly? Personally, I think that it's crazy not to give them each an attack. Look at what else lvl4 gives you:
    Can see in darkness
    +3 dice to Intimidation
    Tentacles reduce Stamina by 2
Lvl2 already does #3, as well as cause courage rolls. So really all you are getting, for 2BP and a roll, is being able to see in darkness, +1 attack. There's no way I'd spend that just to scare someone, and as for combat, lvl3 is far superior, so why would I use this at all? It has to be superior to Lvl3, and doing what lvl3...

Yeah, each one gets its own attack. Which makes Ob4 kinda weird, doesn't it? You get four tentacles, but only 1 extra attack? I've house ruled it so that the number of successes you roll gives you control of one of the tentacles, with the rest just waving about on their own, doing who knows what.

OK thanks for your responses guys! (I'm still interested in hearing other's as well.) But I am curious what exactly you mean by 'out of balance'? Imbalanced with what exactly? Vampires without physical disciplines? I get it about Fortitude, so why not just make it stronger instead of the others weaker? Vampires are powerful creatures, why can't they be as powerful as before? I'm just trying to understand here in case I'm missing something.

replied to is this rote rule official?
I can see an in-game justification for this. It's just figuring out different ways to accomplish the same effect. As a simple example, lighting a candle usually uses something like Forces 2, presumably to heat up the wick enough to cause it to ignite. However, couldn't someone try using Matter to say, break apart the molecules in the paraffin, thereby causing an exothermic reaction? One might say that then yeah, they can just go ahead and do that, but that was the player doing the Science roll there instead of the character. And since usually characters are better at Science (or Occult) than players,...

    V20 Potence rules

I'm just curious how many people use the new V20 Potence rules, where you have to spend blood to get it to work like it used to, as opposed to it being full-power all the time like before. And for those that don't use the new rules, do you still use the new Celerity rules, or do you keep it all the old way?

  • Personally, I'd say no it doesn't affect AP, because it is supposed to heighten normal senses and AP uses a supernatural sense, like Meldok says. However, with much experience using AP my players and I hate the Diff 8 for AP (for the same reasons Zanos points out), so we've house ruled it to 6. Doing as you suggest and having HS affect AP would have essentially the same effect, with bonuses with higher Auspex, so I find this an intriguing idea worth considering because then we wouldn't have to house rule it so much as just interpret the existing rules a bit differently.

    As for AP...

Thanks guys! This all helps. My current character's background just seems to keep growing, and yeah, lots of cross-over weirdness....

Thanks, IanWatson, I understand things much better now.

I get it. I understand that the default time to start play was 2008 before, but what I meant by "modern" was that the events of Aberrant started in 1999, with the Fireman and all that, so that was pretty much the same time as IRL. So is it going to be the same/similar in the new version? If the default game start is 2028, is the original incidents going to be 9 years or so before, in 2019? Not exactly today, but pretty close. And if so, how will that affect the default nameless subsetting set today (-ish,...

BenjCano, I will concede that those are all good points, but I still don't think that it's quite as hopeless as you think. Because there is one big difference between human and vampire psychology study, and that is that vampire study is not starting out from scratch. There are still enough similarities between the two species that gives the vampire psychologists a head start, and while yes, the field as a whole will not be as advanced as with human study, I wouldn't consider it useless. From what I've studied of psychology I know that there are things we know now that would still be of use to...

Not everything. Some problems are "hardware" like you describe, but some are "software", people get confused, or get PTSD, etc. These things I believe would work the same for vampires. Besides, psychology (as opposed to psychiatry) is just about studying the behaviour of people, in this case, vampires. Vampires have behaviour, they have thoughts, they have emotions, they have 'software' problems, so it would be pretty much the same methodologies as used for mortals. Some of the specifics would be different, sure, but that would be the case whenever you are talking about what...

I'm afraid not. Ordering someone to do something below your level on the HoS would still count as a violation, because you caused it to happen. It's like telling someone that the car is safe when you know the brake lines are cut. Even if you didn't cut them, you knowingly sent them into a situation where they would likely die, so whatever happens you caused it to happen, so just as bad.
(Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines showed this well in situations like convincing Paul to go back to the hospital where Pisha is, who you know is going to kill him when he goes there. The game makes you...

I think that this fits in at about a 1 on the Hierarchy of Sins, so I don't see this flying in the Camarilla. Maybe a Lasombra business?

Or, for a service that might be in more demand, do the same thing (more or less) for Ghouls. You don't want their bloodwork or special abilities showing up in a mortal-run hospital, do you? I've seen this done in one or two games I've been in.

Another idea is body disposal and clean-up. This could be as little as a guy with Potence who comes and picks up the body (from an unfortunate accident from feeding, frenzy, or combat),...

    Nephandi crossover stuff

Ok, this may all end up being something that is left up to the ST to decide, but I put the question to people who've read far more than me of Mage in case this has actually been dealt with somewhere.

So suppose a Nephandi dies, and then is possessed by a demon from DTF. Now, Demons have a Torment of 10 when in hell and then that gets reduced to like 4 or 5 when they possess a human because as they merge with that human's mind, their Torment is mitigated by that person's "humanity". My question is, would this change because it's a Nephandi? Would their Torment stay at 10...

RichT Thanks I think that does clear things up. Although I think that you probably should have a name for that era/sub-setting perhaps, it might help.

If you hadn't used the John Wick example (which I've never heard of), I'd think that you must know me or something, because I love those other 3 enough you've practically got me sold on the idea right now. I'd so love to play a game like that! (In fact in the Aberrant game I ran for years I put in an NPC named David Webb who worked for the Directive, using Jason Bourne's real name to throw the players off of who I was stealing...

Thank you RichT for your reply, but I'm afraid that I am still failing to understand. Maybe it's because I am a long time Trinity/Aberrant player but new to these forums, and thus unfamiliar with certain things about Onyx Path's vision that are sometimes taken for granted; I don't know. So if you will indulge me a bit further, I'll try to explain my problem more precisely. My confusion is two-fold:
    1)
This has always been my understanding. "Trinity Continuum" == Trinty+Aberrant+Adventure; that entire universe and timeline. However, now I am being told that "Trinity...

Thanks ahather, although I don't know why. What made these games great was their settings, so now they put in some other generic setting as well, and then give it a confusing name? I don't get it.

Wait, what?!? I thought that "continuum" meant the whole spread from Adventure to Trinity, the universe these exist in as it were. What's this about being a separate genre, or present day?? I'm so confused. ...

I don't think that he means that characters actually do that "every scene". It is however a good tactic to use when you are going into a major battle, such as the ones described with the Sabbat. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen every night, let alone every scene....
