No, because at Sanctum 2 you can conceivably set your Sanctum to be tied to a Midrealm to make your personal Godrealm, and that's a bit much for me at Hero Tier. You can set it up to include "All battlefields' as being your Sanctum...

Sanctum? There's a Sanctum Birthright in Demigod. It starts in a specific anchored location at the lower levels, but as you improve it you can expand it to conceptual things.

So for instance, you can start your Sanctum as being "My Restaurant", but at higher levels you can expand it to include "All restaurants that have a shrine to me"

Now, RAW, the Sanctum Birthright is exclusive to Demigods, BUT I don't think that things will break majorly if you restrict Sanctum to like... 1-2 Dots at Hero tier? Let me double check it.

    Okay, having...

  • The Nexus has a rule against doing Christian-adjacent properties. Like it says 'No monotheistic pantheons' but they mean 'No Abrahamic Pantheons'

Edit: Also on the whole 'Different sets of Virtues' that's possible, but it'd probably be better to like... Instead of one BIG Pantheon that encompasses everything vaguely Abrahamic, see if you could at least make them related but slightly separate Pantheons? I know that at one time someone made an Abrahamic writeup that was a great deal more Jewish than Christian. (Warning: Incomplete and probably won't get updated but it has a lot of what...

Well, the Upheaval Marvel effects the environment.

Personally I'd have it come down to narrative importance. Using a Marvel to smash a door or a table in some random bar to show off? That's less important.

But the bank vault door may require Legend. Not because it's tougher, even if it is, but because if you're in a heist and trying to get into a vault, the vault door is a Significant Obstacle

    Fascinating! Thanks, Geoffrey.

It's also pretty hilarious because I was informed by like,,, D&D Sorcery, which was defined as kind of magic from some inherited source.

Yeah there's a sidebar in one of the books where it mentions Sorcery, and the Sidebar basically says something like "Look you're probably thinking the word 'Witch' for this but that's kind of a loaded phrase that we're going to deliberately take efforts to avoid using in this context, so we use Sorcerer as a catch-all term instead"...

This probably isn't a super helpful answer but my tentative answer would be something like "A tradition gets a motif when it works, and it works when it works"

Circular, maybe a bit, but usually the Motif's origin of power is evident in the Motif itself. So hypothetically, students using the Ars Goetia would probably get a motif like "Summon the right demon for the right job"

Where's the power coming from? Presumably from the demons. If another tradition uses mathematical formulae for its rituals, its motif would reflect that.

    When does...

Oh yeah turns out they released the entire manuscript for open playtesting. Meant to mention it here but it totally slipped my mind.

More seriously, I haven't seen any new play feeds or anything so I haven't gotten any new tidbits...

I wager that in Saints and Monsters, the various Sorcerous traditions will have their own Motifs.

Hey, question. What does a plot idea about a bad-faith strawmanning about cultural appropriation being something that only old-fashioned stuck-up traditionalists think is real (news flash: Cultural Appropriation is real, and it's bad and we shouldn't do it) have to do with Esotericism? Like leaving aside the argument itself, I don't think it's particularly relevant to the topic at hand.

Edit: But an honest opinion about the plotline. It's a bad idea that I will NEVER run.

Because, frankly, I'm a white person. I have benefited from American Imperialism and racist systems...

Sometimes when looking at historical cultures, it can be easy to forget "Oh right, people still traveled", thus things like Izel and his sister coming from Tenochtitlan but settling in a Maya town.

The way I like to put a Geis on a PC?

    1. It shouldn't be so obscure that it never comes up. Remember: A Geis only gives you Momentum if it causes you problems or makes things inconvenient. If you take a Geis of "Things I was going to do anyway" it wouldn't give you Momentum unless it's like... Some kind of ironic thing. Like, the description of the Condition in the Hero book only says "You gain 1 Momentum when obeying your geis causes trouble."

    a. Example: If you take the Geis "Cannot pass a celebration without taking part", then being out...

Look even if the Gods are known to exist, you can still play someone with Occult and Culture 0. It's not that they would necessarily doubt that the Gods exist, much like I wouldn't say that the Czech Republic doesn't exist. But much like I couldn't tell you who is currently in charge of the Czech Republic without Googling, it's possible in the World to know that Gods are a Thing, but also think that the Three Kings of the Theoi are Zoo, Hayden, and Broseidon King of the Brocean.

Knowing a category exists doesn't mean that literally everyone knows everything about it, and it doesn't...

replied to Thematically speaking, what should SMA be?
I heard on the Rumor Mill that while most MA Charmtrees run from 1-3, SMA may well run through Essence 3-5.

I don't really consider MA as part of the bloat because in Ex3, the MA charm trees tend to be a lot tighter than Native Charm Trees, by their very nature....

Look. Baking is a science, essentially. Take atmospheric conditions into account, measure out the ingredients in the right amounts, mix, apply heat for the right amount of time. These are all very verifiable and quantifiable known processes.

AND YET you still have people wondering what Grandma's secret brownie recipe is and she just laughs and says it'll be over her dead body.

Also my day job is on the phone tech support and let me tell you: One person's very basic public knowledge is another person's super occultic secret ritual knowledge....

:P Conspiracy theories arising from a mediocre thriller is also not what I would classify as 'Myth'. Like if you want to use it, then I won't be able to stop you, but let's not claim that it's anything but, well, a conspiracy theory from a mediocre thriller....

No. No it's not. That's not a myth nor is it a legend. It's Advertising.

When we say 'All Myths Are Real', it's important to remember that the following are not myth:
    • Bad PR - Kali's portrayal in Temple of Doom in no way influenced Real Kali.
    • Advertising - Some mystic may be able to get actual power out of Tarot cards, claiming that the Tarot cards originate from the days of Egypt will be lying.
      • Similarly - Lies to try and establish legitimacy are not magically true. If I were to tell the World that I'm Odin, I'd be a liar. Unless I put in the legwork to claim the Mantle of

I think that there may be more playspace in this when we get the full Sorcerer rules, but for now I feel like some of these things will be methods and tools more than anything.

Like a Tarot deck might give some Enhancement on rolls that use the Occult skill for divination, on the "The right tools for the right job" ground.

You can also allow other situational Enhancement, like an amulet of amethyst to prevent you from getting drunk (Trivia tidbit: In medieval eras, not only was this done, but it was also considered a perfectly acceptable form of natural magic...
