I'd also like to second (or third, or fourth) how cool it is to see the elements really playing a part in these DB charms. It's a very nice touch. I'd also, also like to second (or third, or etc.) how glad I am to see more openness in the development here. It's really encouraging and fun to see these design previews, and also to see criticism taken gracefully. While this particularly preview didn't do as much to get my imagination as I hoped, there are some really cool and solid effects in there (even Deep-Listening Palm is a good effect, I just think it's overpriced at 5m), and I fully expect...

I'm not saying it should be as powerful as KH&T, but it falls, way, way short. Even if we compare against Sensory Acuity Prana, SAP is the same cost, but is reflexive, covers all five senses, boosts JB rolls, and with any reasonable Awareness pool I would expect Double-9s to get me to hear through a wall with some ability. KH&T is one charm deeper in the tree, but does everything DLP palm does, at 2m cheaper, reflexive, plus auto-succeed on diff 2 rolls, gives -1 diff, +1 auto-success, boosts even further with a relevant specialty, and applies all of those benefits to touch as well. Yes,...

Hm, I have mixed feelings here. On the one hand, minus a few nitpicks, the charms are all pretty clear in what they're supposed to do, and the difference between fluff and crunch is very clear, which is a huge positive. We also see some [Ability] 3, [Essence] 2 charms, which I don't think happened much, if at all, in the Solar charmset, which is a nice design space to hit.

On the other hand, only a couple of charms really stood out to me as "Yeah, I want to play a character that can do that." And none of the powers that make me think that are Essence 1, and since DBs don't...

No you didn't, and I apologize for implying that you had. I was just trying to express to the other poster that calling something an estimate does not make it not a promise.

And like I said, I have no intention or desire to beat you up for expressing it poorly. I was just baffled at what sort of estimate could lead to the final product being so far off. Apparently that estimate was "one charm per page", which is, quite frankly, insane, but so be it. I've said my piece.

If I cared enough about this to ask for a $5 refund, believe me,...

    Directly from the Kickstarter page:

And yes, an estimate is a promise. It's not an exact promise, no, but calling something an estimate is not carte blanche to put out whatever you feel like in complete disregard of the estimate....

So, I have no intention of running you through the ringer about not describing things quite right leading to bad assumptions. You've accepted that that was a problem, apologized, and promised to improve in the future, and I really, truly appreciate that. As such, it doesn't really bother me that the Kickstarter said "pages" when it probably should have said "charms". That's an understandable and easily forgivable mistake.

What bothers me is that Miracles of the Solar Exalted is already at less than 2.5 charms per page, roughly half the rate of the core book if...

We also need a Craft charm that allows a Warstrider pilot to combine their Warstrider with another Warstrider to make a bigger Warstrider, even if neither Warstrider was ever meant to do so....

Are you only planning on looking at stretch goals here? Because there's more stuff that wasn't stretch goals but was still outside the scope of just the core book. Two examples are the classic PDFs, which I believe have all been delivered, and the book of extra charms, which has been released but falls short of the 50+ pages stated in the Kickstarter.

Of course it does, at least in mixed games, and it's the reason why (at least in the 2e paradigm) I would have little interest in playing a combat-heavy DB in a party with a combat-heavy Dawn. But you seem to have misunderstood my goal. My goal is not "MAXIMUM POWER FOR EVERYONE!!!!11" I don't care that a DB is less powerful than a Solar in an all DB game, because I'm not seeking the most power for my XP the setting offers. What I'm seeking is parity within a group of supposed equals. Two equally XP-invested combat-focused DBs should be roughly equal in power, but if one is running with...

I like the idea in concept, but I'm not sure how to really express it mechanically. How much is a "little short"? And what if the resonant effect doesn't actually add any dice, it just grants a willpower on a successful strike?

I assume they can tell since the Core makes multiple mentions to "X splay prefers Y MM because it resonates best with their Essence", but how that actually comes across in RP is a fun question. I doubt there's any single "correct" answer, but it'd be fun to try to blend it with the themes of the artifact. Like Stormbringer...

A couple questions I have from the Arms of the Chosen preview thread. Is there a power tier structure for the Magical Materials? In other words, if I have an Orichalcum Daiklave and a Jade Daiklave, and both give me a ranged attack, both cost the same amount to activate and both are the same depth in the tree, should the Orichalcum attack be mechanically superior to the Jade one?

And related, are there any mechanical effects that are explicitly the domain of only a subset of the magical materials? For example, only Moonsilver can boost a disarm gambit, or Soulsteel cannot create positive...

Apologies for quoting myself, but I think a better way of expressing my question is this, are some magical materials more powerful than others given the same artifact rating? If I have a 5 dot Orichalcum Daiklave that calls lightning by virtue of a trapped storm spirit and a 5 dot Blue Jade Daiklave that calls lightning because Blue Jade, should the Orichalcum lightning strike be mechanically superior to the Blue Jade one despite both being 5 dots? If so, investing in anything but the best MM you are Resonant with is disadvantageous XP efficiency wise, if not, the same is true of investing in...

Again, these are thematic effects, not mechanical ones. I can gain extra attacks by moving really fast, or by cloning my weapon, or by freezing time, or by having lighting strike my target, or any number of other ways.

I completely agree and argued as such in the discussion of retheming Stormbringer that I mentioned. What I'm arguing for here IS balance. Because right now, a DB player who wants to take a Soulsteel daiklave for flavor must intentionally gimp themselves compared to a DB player who takes a Jade daiklave. And that seems really lame....

Reading through the descriptions of the MMs, I don't see any reason why that broad of a concept should be limited to one particular material. Now, if you wanted to punish them by, say, cursing their family line, or by making them catch on fire whenever they break the law in the future, those should probably be the domain of soulsteel and red jade respectively, but broad goals that define the "what" rather than the "how" seem to me to be pretty MM neutral.

I said mechanical effect, not thematic. "Extra ongoing damage" is a mechanical effect....

Like what? What is an example of a mechanical effect that is entirely gated behind a particular artifact being primarily X magical material?

That what will work? You think all GMs are just suddenly going to find Theme Paint completely unacceptable just because AotC has some guidelines on artifact creation?...

So, I love the Resonant/Dissonant mechanic from a wide setting perspective, and I absolutely agree with the idea that every character in the setting shouldn't be omnisciently XP optimized, but I feel like it raises a problem at the player character level. Namely, regardless of what NPCs with effectively untracked XP do, why would I intentionally choose an artifact of a magical material that I'm not resonant with when I have to spend the exact same amount of XP to unlock lesser power than another player who chose a resonant MM? And as demonstrated by the number of people earlier in the thread who...

  • I mean, ParanoiaCombo's post pretty much boils down to "People like writers who write things they like, and don't like as much writers who write things they don't like as much. News at 11." But yes, Neph's politeness was great, especially in comparison to....others who were involved in the line. One of the big reasons I completely stopped even lurking on these forums was the extremely toxic atmosphere that had been cultivated. Minton and Vance's courtesy, transparency, and helpfulness have been a wonderful breath of fresh air. Between the Ask the Devs thread, the Arms preview, and all...

I like that! My thought had been that it would summon a horrifying storm of ghosts and wailing spirits that upon sheathing would collapse into a massive wave of howling spirits rushing outward, and rather than a Decisive attack, it would be social influence to Persuade everyone to run in fear and Instill a Tie of Primal Terror toward the wielder of the sword.

As far as reskinning goes, I find the idea of just replacing fluff to be pretty boring. If it were just a basic 3 dot weapon with a few semi-generic Evocations, then yeah, okay, go ahead and just reskin the fluff. But a 5 dot...

I'd like to add my voice to rest congratulating the two of you on your new positions. Must of what you've said, shown, and done in the last ~24 hours has really restored my confidence and excitement for this line.

I'd also like to pipe up and say that manses are one of my favorite things about Exalted, so please don't push it too far down the priority list!
