  • Instinct should imo feel swingy but very rewarding if the swing goes your way. Stuff that causes 1s on an opponent's roll to subtract successes, advantages that you roll for (Such as rolling the initiative you gain after crashing an opponent and healing non-aggravated health levels equal to the successes while losing that much initiative), and conditional powers that pay off really well if the conditions are met. I don't have exact ideas since I find it hard to work with an Essence-based approach, but capturing the feel of the tree and the Liminal themes and archetypes should help come up with...

Nah. Overwhelming damage means little when the sheer number of successes you get from Light Artifact Weapons goes past about any amount of soak, particularly when using soak negators (hello, Ebon Shadow and such). And then you TN shift that much damage to still have that edge anyway.

Clash builds are often expensive and a bit alpha-strike-y, so they're not what you should ALWAYS run, but for Sidereals they definitely are as they're written right now. It's one of the many reasons I have to not want their QC Excellency to happen in their actual splat. Looking at dev statements on the...

Even if that happened, it would not fix a lot of the issues that Sidereals have in their dice caps, particularly the "everyone runs paired Light Artifact Weapons with clash builds or are otherwise non-optimal" issue. I don't want to get rid of TN shifting as a concept (it's in the game already anyway if you look at certain Adversaries/Hundred Devils), but I certainly do not want them to be in a Sidereal's excellency by default; rather, I'd prefer them to be their own Charms and make the Sidereal Excellency more standard to avoid those weird interactions....

See, it is perfectly fine for Sidereals to have some genuinely bizarre and fun design choices, but their QC Excellency should imo not be one of them. When you list all of the issues their Excellency causes, all the incentives that make most Sidereal PCs samey in terms of weaponry and dice pools (and even Abilities at a point), how it makes them so much worse at MA than Solars/Abyssals/Infernals and even Lunars and Dragon-Blooded in certain cases when they should be above and beyond their level, or how it makes them pure glass canons. It's not worth the effort all just to say "Hey look! Quirky!...

There are a few Martial Arts (Swaying Grass, Crane, Black Claw, Mantis, etc) that are surprisingly good defensively, and I'm convinced that their innate kits will be insane good at defense if things like Avoidance Kata or Dodge Fate or such make a return, but their flimsy defense regardless comes from I think a specific point: They can use their Excellency to lower their own TN on rolls on top of adding dice, but they cannot raise an enemy's TN when they're applying Parry, Evasion, Resolve or Guile, and they still get the same ridiculously low cap on those ones, 's why Clashes are so good for...

Ah, right! I completely forgot, but yes, basically every single Sidereal would want to run Light Artifact Weapons for the increased non-Charm dice, particularly Artifacts that give you even more dice through Evocations or attunement bonuses. Likewise, they would prefer penalizing their opponents such as through Snake Form, since there's only so much they can raise their defenses. Just having +1 to Defense, Resolve or Guile at E1 is... disgustingly bad, not gonna lie. It would also make effects such as Clashes disgustingly good for Sidereals wielding paired Light Artifact Weapons: They don't have...

I am pretty sure the Colleges are not staying around as dots you purchase. And I would certainly not want them to. So far I prefer the (Ability) sux cap idea....

It's not important for PCs, and that's what matters to me. The fact that your Excellency will start off rubbish and only get decent by the time the game is dying or going halfway through is not a reassurance at all, if anything it makes me feel worse about Sidereals than just leaving their QC Excellency as is. Lunars already get "wider" Excellencies by being capable of stunting all their 5-dot Attributes into each roll they can Excellency, and only having nine Excellencies to get as opposed to 25. Essence-based does not make their cap wider than that, only wider than Solars, so even...

(Essence + Ability) is the same size as the Liminal dicepool when at iconic anima, which is kinda low. They'd have DB Excellencies at E1, and only match E1 Lunars or Solars at E5. I'd probably go with two Abilities the way Lunars get two Attributes, or... idk, Ability + (Willpower/2 rounded up) or something. Something that potentially lets their Excellencies be up there with the rest, since they no longer retain TN reduction as part of their Excellency.

So, Sidereal MA wordcount will already be at a huge premium, because they still need wordcount for Sidereal Martial Arts including at least two completely new ones we've heard of. The Samsara one and the Cut Everything one iirc. So I doubt we'll get a lot of normal MAs designed explicitly to work great with Sidereals, besides Violet Bier of Sorrows and Throne Shadow. Getimians are in a similar boat and they don't have the Sidereal Problem there cuz their excellencies have been said to just add dice or successes as usual. Therefore we can conclude there's not a lot the Sid book can do when it comes...

  • The way I have it, Strength and Appearance reflect Flesh, Dexterity and Perception reflect Blood, Manipulation and Stamina reflect Soil, Wits and Charisma reflect Breath, and Intelligence reflects Marrow. Since there's no real way to make them proportionate, trick's just not worrying too much about it and going with what feels about right....

The thing with current Sids and their excellencies is that despite them being made out to be masters of martial arts, a lot of MA Charms add dice or successes to rolls that their tiny dice caps cannot fully take advantage of. For example, just on the Lunars book:

Centipede Style: Blurring Scurry Prana (cannot add the full amount of dice until E3 despite being an E1 Charm, even DBs can get this benefit from E1), Hundred Leg Embrace (The Ninety-Nine More's attack and control benefits are severely diminished, limited to a max of 2 dice at E2), Tenacious Centipede Technique (if not suffering...

I would honestly prefer Sidereals to get a normal dice-adder or success-adder Excellency with Celestial caps, and for their TN manipulation to be in Charms for each of their trees that allow them to lower their rolls' TN with that Ability by -1 and has a rider on the side to differentiate each. Then a second one later on, and a third one for a max of TN 4 further later on. Maybe at E1, E2 and E3 respectively. E3 one having a WP cost, the rest just motes....

  • A Liminal Wits Excellency sounds like them channeling the fluid rush of blood or the refreshing insight of breath into their reflexes and reactions to make them lightning fast or awfully thorough. Strength channels the might of the flesh, Dexterity the fluidity of blood, Stamina the endurance of the soil, or however else you want to set them up.

Excellencies are the most basic powers of the Chosen, so they don't exactly need to be super flavorful besides making the barest amount of sense. The less basic and more advanced their Charms become, the more they need to be tied to the Liminal...

replied to Sorcerous Workings: Where We Make Judgments
Double 7 on sorcery is not a sorcerous working, and honestly it probably isn't even in the range of Solar Charms before E3 or so. Even then the Charm would need some sort of condition or drawback, possibly both. Other Celestials maaaay get something similar like Sidereals getting Target Number reduction through different Charms or Lunars rerolling 1s with Penumbra Witch Mastery, but either less powerful than Double 7s or something you only get by combining several effects bought separately, would be my guess.

A Working to make your sorcery better could grant you a new shaping ritual,...

replied to Intimacies and how commonly do they change
Personally, I look at it this way: Would the instilled Intimacy go against a Defining Intimacy? If so, the character might as well spend themselves empty trying to resist that. Would the instilled Intimacy go against a Major Intimacy? Then they spend WP unless they're at half or less WP and don't feel like it's worth the exhaustion. Would it go against a Minor one? They spend WP if they're at full WP, but otherwise... nah, not worth.

If it goes WITH another Intimacy, in a way that causes them to lose Resolve against the Influence, then it becomes increasingly difficult for them to...
