  • So this was how things were done in 2e and ended up creating what was sometimes called a 2-7 split or 2-7 filter after the declare dodge and declare soak phases. As a matter of fact, it didn't end up actually devaluing DVs that much, since the soak wouldn't save you from badtouch effects.

However what it did do was let every player know if there was a scary bad-touch coming and if there wasn't they would just use the DV to see if the attack whiffed, and use the soak if it didn't and looked to pose a threat. It was not a good design space to be in since it made defense so much more...

  • Might I suggest a slightly different interpretation?

The Silver Pact as a whole clearly has the Realm high on its list of concerns, in fact, the need to deal with them is probably one of the few things that have universal support among its members. However, the Silver Pact is not monolithic either - it has a number of shahan-yas aren't all that concerned with the Realm. The Pact is to the Lunars what the Realm is to the Dragonblooded, a central organization that many (though not all) exist in that has set interests that may or may not comport with any number of its component factions....

    A Philosophical Question concerning Artifacts

So one of the biggest, and in my opinion best, changes from 3e was the addition of Evocations, giving artifacts a lot more personality than they used to. The evocations of artifacts are related to their personal Narrative, especially the legacy artifacts for the Dragonblooded. However, you can also create new artifacts even 5 dot ones, which presumably don't have a story related to them as of yet, but you are still able to get evocations for them which do all follow a theme. Should these evocations be related to destiny, in anticipation of a story yet to come? In this case does the dot rating...

So aura has a little bit of a relation to anima, but it's not much, any dragonblooded can enter any aura at any anima level, furthermore, there is always at least 1 charm of each type in each tree. However, when a DB enters bonfire anima they also immediately switch into the corresponding Aura if they aren't already. Some charms have you expend the Aura as a secondary cost, but this doesn't alter your anima level or effects in any way. I don't know if that changes your opinions any.

Yes. I get that lunar 'mates' aren't necessarily romantic but the lunar mates seemed to be the last vestiges of monogamy in the Exalted universe, given that the Realm has a lot of polyamorous and frequently bisexual relationships. From how you expressed it, it sounded like the solars still had their mates, but also were bonded with all the Lunars to a varying extent which sounds fairly poly to me.

Though in retrospect it seems weird that Solars and Lunars would have a pair-bond thing going on, given that the Unconquered Sun and Luna had, at various points, Gaia, Merela, one of the...

  • That's a really interesting idea, and it also covers the issue where I would want the Tulpa to be able to be manifested even when not in the Martial Arts Form in order to have more utility. One of the charms in the style has in my mind is 'Fate's Arrow' a decisive-only attack which either kills the target or grants them a Tulpa. It also might be good because then it can take on a larger variety of shapes and abilities. I'll play around with these ideas....

  • Thanks! That's disappointing, so I may just make the style and then ask for feedback

In terms of design, my initial idea was to start with the form charm that allowed the user to manifest the Tulpa, then have an interconnected tree of 20-25 charms, that the user could take 10-11 of, to build a personalized Tulpa. Then there was 1-3 essence 6 capstones that the user could choose one of.

However, I'm not totally sold on this version. I could also consider a much more normal MA tree, again starting with the Form Charm which branches out into ways of using the Tulpa, with...

  • Are there Resources for help in designing new charms?

Hi everyone, I really want to make my own homebrew charms for a variety of circumstances, particularly for Sidereal Martial Arts. However, unlike evocations and antagonists, I don't think I have much of a head for charm design and balance. Are there any resources for guidance in creating homebrew charms in terms of their power?

As to the actual style I want to homebrew is the Kaleidoscopic Border of Logic Style, which was ... not great last edition. It either relied on overly costly and useless (beyond how royally it fucked with the victim) finishing blows and 'bad touches', or utterly...

I don't know that this works for my purposes exactly, but I really wanted to let you know that this is super fucking cool! If you have the document, would you mind posting it?

I think Blaque has some excellent points about how QC characters don't really need to necessarily be obviously supernatural in order to make the game work and also have mechanical flavor. A martial artist or soldier might have parry 7 in the fight because in the narrative they are incredibly motivated as well as skilled, or are willing to take the kind of risks someone fighting with the expectation of surviving...

Ah gotcha, the short version is that Dragonblooded have an aura state to keep track of. When they spend a turn only using charms of a single element they move into that Aura and leave it if they use charms. Charms with the balanced keyword will never disrupt aura. Lastly, some charms have an Aura keyword, which means that they have extra effects if you are in the appropriate Aura or expend an appropriate Aura as part of the charm. An easy version of this would be to allow DB's in Fire Aura access to the mastery keyword, but there are many other ways you could go about it if you so desired.

Should these be fire aspected, or have aura abilities? They have a fire theme and reference Hesiesh several times, so it seems thematically appropriate. Plus it would be cool if other martial arts could have the keyword, like Righteous devil style.

If that is what he meant I apologize, I misread his statement. Though frankly, I object to the overall hostile and condescending tone of his posts. However, if that was unintended or something that I read into the post, I again apologize. I am not intending to start flame wars.

Oz, can mortals generally attune to artifacts, or does it have to be a specialized artifact? There was a powerful scepter in 2e that allowed mortals to wield it and create powerful laws, but I don't know how much of a feature this is in 3e....

Hey Levi, there is literally no reason for your hostility and condescension.

    https://exalted-3e.fandom.com/wiki/Exalted_3e_Wiki

Your points are disingenuous when they aren't outright incorrect.

Blaque you made a similar point, but without the arrogant condescension. I don't know whether the Neverborn 'don't want anything' since they aren't really sentient and don't take direct action, but the fact of the matter is their existence tends to drive Creation toward non-existence. You will notice that I did not make sweeping statements about any of the categories,...

I don't know that I understand the meaning in your reply. After all the Neverborn, most of the Deathlords, and a good portion of the abyssals want to wipe out mortals. Not to mention their Nephwracks and various other undead minions. The Yozi that don't want to enslave humanity or make them exist in a state of constant torment have omnicide on the menu. Their respective Akuma literally have to be on board. The demons are a mixed bag, but some are on board with the Zero-Mortals plan. There are the Behemoths, the Heckeronherie, various other malevolent monsters. All of the Raksha want to drag creation...

    Mortals in 3e

I know that this might be a somewhat contentious topic, given the lack of Enlightened mortals in 3e, but given that the exalted seem to be substantially less than 1% of the population, and there are so many threats to mortal life it seems improbable that humans survive given the frankly minimal protection that ~30,000 Dragon-blooded can give them. But even in 2e, enlightened mortals were a rare occurrence. This also bothers me since even animals seem to be able to gain access to the essence and thus a limited number of charms, and they can do it more easily than mortals can. So I wanted to make...

On the first question, I wasn't so much asking about mechanics as story, but the point is taken that there are many types of Akuma that might have different abilities both in their base form, and what they were granted. However, I was trying to ask if say a Terrestrial Exalted Akuma focused on combat would be a threat to a combat-focused solar as a matter of story?...
