I think people come to role-playing for a variety of different reasons, and a sizable portion of people come to it to play an idealized version of themselves. So to those people, the notion of playing a monster is antithetical to who they are as people and they can't understand why anyone would enjoy playing a monster unless they are monsters themselves.
