It was just an example riffing off of the anime with a cellphone for his special power. The idea is more that rolling a full excellency on a strong dice pool action will be as amazing as what a medieval fantasy character hears when someone googles an answer. Instant knowledge from a super-genius. 10-20 successes is nutso crazy when most challenges in the game are diff 1-5...

Hmm, i think my focus got missed for what bits are inspiring.

The game should have all the PCs as Main characters. All of them are Exalted, and all are superhuman. Solars most of all. Gate was an Isekai where Japan counter invaded a fantasy realm. In that realm was a demigod of war or death or something. Very Solar Exalted-esque, not the main person.

Coming from another world is not the main idea (unless you want to run that game), but it is instead being thrust into that power that those insert plots usually give to main PCs. A cellphone with Google search and Maps can...

Isekai, the Thrill of Power, and Exalted

"Nearly all men can withstand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." -Abraham Lincoln

This quote is at the start of the 3ed Exalted Core, and i love it. Exalted are truly larger than life, and the stories they can have should shake the world.

Isekai is a genre of Japanese Anime thay is quite big at the moment. It means 'another world', and includes very numerous shows about regular people going to a fantasy realm. Lately these anime include two things: the worlds being video games/rpgs, and the main character being WAAAYYY...

  • With the incredible restraint 3rd edition has had for other realm intereferences running amokin Creation (Heaven & Hell both), and hopefully going to run them more standalone style like Autocthonia, i would say treat them like a Sidereal but their powers open up chance rather lock it down.

Assuming Sidereals can trade in dice or motes for successes, maybe have a high risk effect with Getimians. Double 9s but subtract successes for 2s. Or add dice but raise the difficulty by a slight amount.

Keep them and Sidereals as subtle as possible is my primary thought. The less...

Ooh, possible origin story of the forgotten blade?

Just kidding, onto more serious ideas:
I would love a quest for a matching set of artifacts that complement each other and harmonize well together. One for each good guy PC, and maybe wearable all by one person as the evil collector.

So maybe: armor, sword, smashfist/shield, bow, and like a helmet or crown. Each a different color of jade, buffed evocations when 'near' another of the set.

The problem ive had with mass artifact creation concerning weapons like daiklaves that i feel 3rd edition adresses...

  • See i want more of that paperwork, that loose cannon complaints, all of that. That is what makes Sidereal PCs seem fun to play. But their uses as NPCs and those roles ( the wise old sifu, the top secret assassin) clashes a little with that.

And not by a lot. Its just like . . .
PC Sidereal Char-Gen: Ess 1, Attribute 8/6/4, etc.
NPC Sidereal Char-Gen: Ess 4, choose 3 full martial arts styles you know, Celestial Circle Sorcery, choose two pinnacle charms to switch you out from danger.

It just doesn't feel like you make them the same way to me i guess?

  • It feels like with the amount of what was put on the (game designed) shoulders of the Sidereals is just too many eggs in one basket. They only have 'about' 100 of them, and not even all active. Even if they were all active and started at Essence 2 (required training say), if the split is a better than likely of Ess 2 40%/Ess 3 30%/Ess 4 20%/Ess 5 10%; leaves 30 elder sidereals to run all the politics in Heaven (their part at least) while 70 agents cover all of Creation. And those 70 Essence 2-3 agents are the ones spending all their time being wise sifus and counters to the Lunar machinations...

Sidereals Wear Too Many Hats! NPC vs PC roles

So one of the issues I've had with Sidereals is that from their perspective they have way too much to do, and everyone else sees them as masters of everything. Solars need them to be the wise old masters as both ally and enemy, then the Dragonbloods need them to be even bigger wise old masters secretly guiding them through unseen dangers that the DBs aren't able to match. Then they have to counter Lunars, the other Celestial Exalted, in sneaky spy games and so need to infiltrate just as well asxthem, maybe better.

After all this expectation, the roles they play IN Heaven are even...

  • I think how Sidereals can be handled is helped by the new 3rd edition cover story of any Exalt: "Oh me? Im an Exigent!". They were already good at disguises and fitting into positions people didn't expect them in, as they had a lot of roles to fill since they had the most control over the design of the Usurpation.

This issue kind of reminds me of a Sidereal problem. Which i should make elsewhere instead of clogging up your thread here

  • This one is a little simple. Ammunition check is basically when your character takes that moment to check his supplies. A failure can be realizing his quiver is back in his tent during an ambush, or that that when she reaches for a reload to her firewand that the bandolier is empty.

Attached to this thought, i know ammunition checks aren't used much on PCs, but it would be a great way to push a trickster type opponent. Larceny powers, specialized gambits, built to force an ammo check, at penalty if well done, to help neutralize what is usually part of the danger of ranged fighting....

There are Artifact 2 items, but none of them are weapons or armor and they cover the older edition's versions of the utility based 1-2 dot artifacts. Anything combat based is Artifact 3+.

The listed base stats of the various light/medium/ heavy melee/archery/thrown artifacts and armors are the base stats. This includes Attunement cost of 5 base for all of them i believe. Personalizing them into unique wonders is then the job of the player and/or ST, including adding style and evocation options.

Dry Rain: a particularly nasty effect of the Southern and Western Wylds, Dry Rain rolls in on very dusty clouds, but when it starts, water starts falling up from the ground up into the sky to feed the hungry clouds. It only sucks up fresh water, leaving oceans untouched but rain barrels and small oases drained after the passing. Very bad for struggling towns.

I really like this take, it gives it the realistic and proper context for who would be the decision maker (or influencer) on the issue.

I want Grandma Cynis to weigh in on a lot more of this whole design. Like explaining how you sort out each of those options that become children and how each stipend assigned gets them their school placements or the like. Maybe a Great-Grandma Cynis to cover the many and varied results...

Ooh, to follow up on that theme, you could have a glitch and a huge area messes up on colors or sounds (the bubbling brook sounds scratchy, or a chunk of desert suddenly going pink) Something could come by and cause a clipping issue, so suddenly this tree has a random animal leg sticking out of it.

Ooh, or a fate error hits a person and they gain Hideous as the face goes inside out

They have been around since first edition actually, they are also one of my favorites too. I have not seen them remade yet, and have made do with Frost Thorn Knuckles but no grappling hook power.

But best idea for a new build would be using Frost Thorn as a base (razor claws with a ranged attack), but get atheltics moves instead of freezing opponents

Thank you, Lioness & Greyman, I could not place the idea properly. It feels better knowing that idea was 2nd edition so i can let it go in my head.

I still hope you can have a way to sneak in some sorcery on a PC in some fashion. Either lesser positions in the Heptagram for a tough sell (no, never got Sorcery, just got my bachelors in exorcism or artifact crafting), or a lesser Sorcery institution that can be a kind of dangerous but useful sneaky way to pick up such a skill.

Granted, much of this could be after becoming an adult, so maybe bringing in a tutor to learn...
