Folding Ship! Folding Ship! Folding Ship!

Ahem, sorry about that. As a starter for 10:

Conquering Tide might be a decent reference point for vessels with actual evocations – a black jade man-o-war with evocations designed to boost pursuit at sea (so sailing speed bonuses, penalties on opponents stratagems, boosts to sail and investigation charms). It's like the world's greatest coastguard cutter.

Different craft could maybe do different things, a spec-ops style submersible that enhances your stealth charms for commando-style raids or smuggling...

Sorry, late to this and other folk have answered lots of it already. Only thing I’ll add is that the write-ups we currently have of the lesser secondary schools do a fine job of emphasising the bits of their curriculum they excel at/make them unique/interesting (‘cause they provides the best story hooks…) as Alpharius explains.

So the Balustrade of Glorious Harmony is geomancy nirvana, the Forge of Mother’s Fury (another sorcery school) is big on weapon-forging (and is ‘one of the few forges in the Realm licensed to work orichalcum’), while the House of the Whispering Squall...

  • Not a long thread he says…

Reading this all, am I being dense or isn’t everyone pretty much in agreement on this and largely debating degrees/fixes...?

    - Steel Devil RAW is all over the place in terms of power.

    - DAT and TAT are poor charms that can be mitigated somewhat by loading up onslaught on a target/buzzsawing your way through mooks (see DrLoveMonkey’s recent fights in the Arena). The fact these are the signature charms of the ‘sword blender’ style and are things lots of the style’s charms key off makes this especially disappointing....

Note: My own foibles/house rules on display – if you’re going to dual-wield medium weapons I can’t bring myself to not take the ambidextrous merit, and I think paired reaper daiklaves are simply better than equivalent short daiklaves so have counted them as a four-dot artefact. If disarmed, Zaheer’d have lost both of ‘em.

Might be another obvious example, but there's also the Heptagram itself, the construction of which was surely no mean feat. Described here from WFHW, p. 87:

The school itself consists of six towers encircling a seventh in perfect geomantic harmony. Outer towers are filled with laboratories, summoning circles, and rare equipment and materials necessary for magical practice. The central tower contains faculty and student lodgings and the Heptagram’s only lecture hall, wherein each student holds an assigned seat. Food is prepared and the lands maintained by bound elementals and demons,...

+1 on this. Magistrates are great, they offer tonnes of story hooks and slot into so many different types of games.

Think the passage Dex is referencing is this one from p.45 in The Realm:

Every magistrate is Dragon-Blooded. The Empress often chose influential rebels and heretics, relatively harmless criminals, and other social or political outcasts as magistrates — competent but disgraced Exalted who’d fallen victim to Dynastic machinations, or become scapegoats for grievous failures or personal transgressions against families and rivals. Primarily, the Empress required...

    Hi guys, sorry, pedantic Qs:

    1. Can Dragon-Scale Shield's benefits be applied to an MA-based parry using that weapon? The text seems to imply that the charm is boosting the weapon itself a la Dragon-Graced Weapon.

    2. The text for Dragon-Scale Shield says: 'The Air variant can be used against attacks from close range if combined with another element.' Does that mean it can be used against an attack using melee/brawl etc, or is it projectile only (i.e. it can now also be used against a thrown/archery/other ranged thingy projectile-based attack from close range, no other...

Thumbs up to all of these. Also:

Afohdha (AoR) has Thirst-Quenching Goddess Regalia, which can automatically instil a minor intimacy in someone, or boost an existing one

And ('cause I was looking at him recently), Cevis Ghandarva's Eclipse charms in Heirs might offer mechanics you could adapt/crib....

  • TAT's a dead end charm, though, no? I know that's not a defence of the charm itself, but you don't have to take it in order to access any of the rest of the style.

It does seem though that Dual-Slaying Stance/Whirling Guillotine Dance are miles above everything else in the tree. Having looked again though I was struck by how wp intensive it is and how big a deal (relatively) the mastery bonus for Steel Devil Strike is as a result. It does at a glance also seem to be a style that nerfs Terrestrials especially hard, although the stuff going on in the Arena at the minute may say dif...

I was latterly thinking something like an alternative grapple effect, along the lines of, dunno...

Toss: The grappler ends the clinch prematurely, throwing the victim at one other opponent within close range. The grappler rolls (Dexterity + Thrown) against the newly targetted opponent's Defence. The attack dice pool is boosted by 1 dice per turn of control forfeited, up to a maximum of (Strength). If the attack hits, both the grapple victim and the target lose 1 point of initiative – which the grappler gains – and are knocked prone. However, the grappler can choose to forgo gaining...

Isn't that perhaps overly powerful? It's essentially allowing a grappler to make two withering attacks per turn without the use of charms (v. non 3e) – even if they're not getting initiative from the less successful attack – and on top of that potentially leaving two people prone.

Plus a heavy thrown weapon is packing the same damage value as a great axe, which seems pretty vicious to me, even if the unfortunate projectile happens to be in full plate...

I'd be tempted to go with just knocking prone on hitting, and even that's going to be such a boost to grapplers...

Potentially stupid question: how do anyone who has used any of the DB QCs address aura?

The majority of characters I can see have obvious options that can put them in the aura they need to use the charms that depend on it, but was looking at Cevis Ghandarva in Heirs recently – he has Revolving-Hurricane-Force Defence and Body-Like-Clouds Meditation, which require air aura, and unless he:

    (a) uses one of his social charms during a fight or...
    (b) triggers a movement roll so he can pop Cloud-Treading Method or...
    (c) gets to bonfire...

    ...he can't...
