  • [3e homebrew] Two elementals merging into one being, 'Forge'. [P.E.A.C.H]

A player in my current game wants a 5 dot ally who will be the merged form of two elemental spirits who are friends and lovers.

I've spent a lot of time creating lore, personalities, backstories, statistics and powers for the two elementals, as well as detailing their merged form.

I've never undertaken a homebrew project as elaborate as this in Exalted before (a system I'm still learning), and so I'm hoping that you folks can take a look and give me both thoughts and guidance on what I have writing wise, and help on making the character(s) balanced.

    In particular...

That makes sense then! It's a little odd to me lore-wise, but nothing that can't be justified at the table if need be.
It would be an easy house rule to add excellencies for gods or demons, but so far I've found that the system tends to work in practice even when it seems odd on paper, so I'll wait for it to become a problem before I start trying to tinker!

Thank you both for your help!...

As I understand it, spirits, demons and gods all had excellencies in 2e, however there doesn't seem to be any reference to them having those powers in 3e. This makes some high essence gods and demons seem surprisingly unimpressive at times, compared to the Exalted. Is this all intended, or have I missed a rule about non-Exalt Excellencies?

Edit: I'm aware that some, like Octavian and Ahlat, have pseudo-excellency powers, but these are generally more limited and can't always be used.

That's definitely the case for Lunars, whose text is much more precise as you say. That text is only specific to them however - and their excellencies have other limitations and uses too, so I'm not certain that rules for Lunar excellencies apply to the other Exalted.

That made me think about things from another perspective though - to use an excellency you have to have it as an power your character has gained, and Solars only gain excellencies for abilities, as laid out later in the book. So I'd say that's the conclusive reason why you can't excellency other rolls - as odd as it...

I found that the book wasn't entirely clear on excellency-ing non-(Attribute + Ability) rolls, as it says you can enhance "any rolled action", which would explicitly allow actions other than (Attribute + Ability), yet it goes on to say that you can spend up to (Attribute + Ability) motes - implying that only rolls that use (Attribute + Ability) were intended to be enhanced....

Well gosh, it's in the sidebar on page 208 - Noncombatants and Trivial Opponents, it's exactly the same as my 'houserule' save for their initiative being 0 rather than being rolled! I thought it was an original houserule, but I guess I was just creatively overcoming my own ignorance!...

Can you activate charms like Sensory Acuity Prana to enhance a join battle roll if you don't know you're about to be attacked?

That would make sense, is that based on a dev answer?...

I find that there's a huge jump between a trivial opponent who dies in a single attack of any kind or is slain as a matter of course in narration, and the weakest 'non-trivial' opponents, who have to be properly engaged in combat and whose base 7 health tracks mean that even a solar with a good join battle roll can't slay them in a single decisive attack/round of combat.

We've been trying out a rule to attempt to bridge that gap to make that feel less jarring by representing very weak but not totally trivial individual opponents with the Battle Group mechanics, modelling them as a...

    Thanks for the advice, folks!

That's interesting, I'd never considered a roll like that. The book isn't really clear on excellency-ing a roll like that, as it says you can enhance "any rolled action", yet goes on to say that you can spend up to (Attribute + Ability) motes - implying that only rolls that use (Attribute + Ability) are intended to be enhanced. As written that leaves a (Willpower + Occult) roll very nebulous, allowed yet with no defined properties. Correct me if I'm wrong there though, folks!

Halving the wp value makes good sense for...

Well, I wanted to see what folks think, as it would effectively double the motes it gives for free (in the case of the one I quoted, since you'd regain the motes before you woke up), so it makes a big difference. ...

Can you excellency the roll for a shaping ritual? For example, the 'Scarred by Nightmares' ritual that lets you give up Willpower recovery from sleep to roll (Wits + Occult) and gain motes equal to your successes.

  • I’m sorry I didn’t directly reply to some folks sooner, allow me to correct that. And what a treasure trove of advice I’ve come back to, you folks could write a book on this!

Thank you for your reply! It makes sense to sometimes deviate from the traditional pool as you say, but this thread has helped a lot with showing me how to avoid that becoming the norm. If my players had their way they’d probably use pure logic in every social encounter, like a team of wuxia vulcans.

This is definitely something I need to suggest to my...
