    I think it says it somewhere but: Avatars can more or less do whatever, especially with points in allies, so limiting it to charms may be a bit annoying or too much. Just go with what works and what the avatar appears as.
    Mage might not even know the appearance of the Avatar = His actual Avatar. A 1-2-3 point Avatar companion, the points being points in allies, might be a random fucking bear that shows up to help you sometimes. Obviously it may just...

  • I just think its a good contrast between what we have now. I'm not sure what I think is the correct choice, a more meta "You only OOC know exactly what spheres you are using" or one more grounded in in character sphere understanding. The former allows you to use Time 3 leniently with just being 'buff' while the latter means to act really quickly you'd be using some Life effect, maybe mind as well to incorporate your body.
    It also gives us the 'add spirit 2 to everything for no bonus' stuff which I'm not a huge fan of.

  • The Sorcerer's Crusade book had an interesting take on this.
    There was a Time 3 effect for the Order of Reason, level 3 effects were things they did without even knowing they are magic.
    They would push their bodies to the extreme to be 'peak physical condition'
    The results?
    Extra turns as if using Time 3 normally. The focus? Being tough and buff.

  • (I think HDYDT suggests being able to use Life 3 [I think] to be able to fuck with someones brain chemistry, but not outright mind effects. So Life ----> Mind works rather 1-1 in some cases. I think you can use life to boost your mental capacities as well, I think Mind can do that as well?, so some things work better than others)

    Otherwise I agree. It gets kinda weird, because if my character thinks he is doing 'Matter based alchemy' (This gets more problematic the more meta you get) but I make fire with it, am I using forces or what.

  • I think keeping things limited to 5 encourages trying to find fancier/hidden styles of magic to accomplish 'impossible' tasks, using more sphere knowledge, more ritual.
    Though I'm not entirely against arch-spheres.

  • I always thought it was strange they never mention the fun way of countering: spells. The book never goes “just block spells avatar the last air bender style, stop a wall of fire coming towards you with a wall of water or earth” or what you suggested. It seems like something that’s be in a damn magic game

  • I think unweaving spells or counterspelling mentions you just need 1 dot of any of the spheres, though maybe I am wrong?, so if someone grew fangs using Spirit/Life, it would actually be EASIER for others to counterspell it....

    I never really liked Matter, it always felt weird and the people that use Matter, the traditions and technocracy, I never felt they really had good examples of matter rotes. Or matter rotes in the field.
    Also I think M20 said with Matter 2 you could make stuff levitate (Not Matter 2/Forces 2, Matter 2 by its self. It lists like 3 different ways to fly. One is forces 2, one is Matter 2, then it suggests some crazy shit like Corr 3/life 1 or something) ….but nothing about Matter 2 says you could make things levitate? Idk.

    I'd be more fine with matter stuff if it was better explained,...
