The Dawn is just a good example, since it really stands out when fighty-man is less fighty than sneaky-man or talky-man. The general point is pretty universally applicable to any Ability or theater of conflict. Danny Dawn buying 6 Presence charms and leveraging their Anima scary-di[c]e can cause the same issue if Zoey Zenith went for Double-9s with all the social Abilities.
If everyone in your group knows what they're doing and communicates well during chargen to make sure no niches are infringed upon (or nobody cares about niche protection), not having Supernal should work fine. Heck,...

    Yes, it absolutely does.
It is very easy for differences in Charm choice to de-Dawn the Dawn. And when you take away Supernal, all that's really diversifying characters is Charm choice.
Danny Dawn throws 6 picks into combat and diversifies into other people's niches, Nancy Night goes all-in assassin with 9 combat Charms. Whoops, Nancy's deadlier than Danny. Or whoops, Nancy picked good charms while Danny didn't. Or whoops, Danny picked a diverse spread of combat charms while Nancy went for a focused set of combat charms.
I'm not even theorycrafting here, that last one...

It absolutely does. Note that "overshadowed" and "not interesting" are completely different things.
Even something as simple as the Dawn taking not-Melee while the Night takes Melee at a bit higher investment is all you need for the Dawn to be second-string in their own field of expertise.
One big problem is that the quantity of Caste Abilities and Favored Abilities are equal, so you can have two completely identical Ability/Charm listings. There's absolutely no niche protection aside from Supernal. And combat is something many characters invest into, making...

I think it's more that sexy is just objective in Creation. Personally, I blame Venus. Not necessarily sexual attraction being objective, but universal agreement that Fakharu is a mighty fine piece of scale even if you don't swing all the way out that far. The way people in real life will talk about attractive celebrities.

Tangent: I always envisioned RLSS as being similar to Knowing the Soul's Price. There's something that will get the other party to engage in the desired behavior, but it's not necessarily lust. So the Solar unconsciously frames their seductive attempt in a...

I had a long and argumentative response typed out, but then I realized that it was pointless since I'm fairly certain we approach GMing from fundamentally incompatible directions. So I'm just going to say that you're making prioritization decisions I wouldn't because your value weighting is radically different....

None of that makes the BBEG himself a threat, it just makes him a squishy and disappointing head on the shoulders of a terrifyingly massive giant.
Also, how the fuck do you even run 75-100 Dragonblooded?...

This problem fundamentally stems from the fact that an E1 Solar(oid) has access to more raw power than an E5 any-other-Exalt. It's very difficult for the BBEG to be a credible threat when Danny Dawn started the game with better combat charms, Zoey Zenith with better social charms, and etc etc. Then you add in the fact that it's a three-five on one fight and things just get horribly ugly.
If Solar(oid)s didn't start with E5 charm access, then you could say "OK, Lucy Lunar is E5, E5 Lunar charms are sufficiently superior to E2 Solar charms that she'll be a terrifying fight until the...

Every round, everyone gets one "flare". That is, at any point they do a thing (attack, parry, persuade, etc) they can raise their Anima a level. Then give every charm an Anima prereq. Or make effects scale based on Anima, or something to make the fight start at low intensity and ramp up as people go blonde.

Alternatively, bring back Charm Activations. You get Anima+1 per instant. Want more? You're flaring!
Not as elegant and harder to balance, but does prevent "OK, let me look up these seven charms I'm applying...

Players are going to lean towards all-in win now maneuvers like TAP-HSF because it's near impossible to sustain a fight without flaring.
You also set up a really nasty trap where if somebody ends a fight low on motes but has time to work off their anima, they might enter the next fight low on motes and unable to spend enough to unlock better mote regen in time....

Some Martial Arts permit you to do things impossible without them. Air Dragon Style's melee-chakrams and Wood Dragon Style's staff-bow come to mind. Air Dragon is actually pretty amazing for a mortal, since it gives them Thrown, Brawl, and Melee competence for the price of one Ability.
Also, if there's any suggestion whatsoever that the character will Exalt then they'd better have their Martial Artist dots paid and Martial Art bought if they want Martial Arts charms anytime soon....

Even crazier idea: Why should spirits even have mote pools? Gate their bigger abilities behind WP costs or resets and they instantly become different instead of just Exalts with unique charms....

I'd just make that a function of the artifact itself. Fury of Hills the White Jade Grand Goremaul is grand because it generates a massive lump of rock at one end. Without attunement, it's just a metal stick, so you can use it unattuned as a mace without penalty.
Impending Sunrise the Orichalcum Shortklave was made to look like a normal short sword until evocations get broken out, so it can be used as a normal short sword too.
Etc etc. It's a pretty minor thing, so I think it'd be perfectly fine to add a mundane stats mundane use to any artifact that feels suitable for mundane...

  • Ah, but the beauty is that there is no Charm-dice limit for things that aren't Attribute+Ability, like Damage. You can pile on every single Charm and they'll all stack (just don't miss)....

  • It's a simple set of common social tasks. I check if a social system:
    - Permits them to be attempted with reasonably well-defined mechanics
    - Has reasonably well-defined difficulties (that is, the GM doesn't have to invent a difficulty)
    - Does not leak important metainformation such as "*dice clattter* Make a Detect Lies check. OK, your character thinks he's telling the truth even though you the player know you only make Detect Lies checks when you're lied to."

The general list of tasks is:
    - The Basic Functions tests: Can you talk your way past...

Note that (supposedly, I never touched 2e) all the big 2e charms that used to be E6+ got bumped down. E4-5 is the new E6+.
I don't see why the number being a 6 instead of a 5 makes your character's achievements less meaningful, the gap between E4 charms and E5 charms is pretty huge. I also don't see what having a 6 instead of a 5 has to do with PC experience gain rate being stratospheric compared to everyone else....
