A dwarf star is not matter in the context that Matter usually describes it. Something like that ( or for instance anti-matter etc) is pretty much Archmastery.

Alternatively you could use "State change" as a reference. It lets you create plasma... except its not hot. So by analogy your dwarf star core would be pretty inert.

The third option is that the exarchs do horrible things to anyone who attempts such a thing. Killing all their slaves is an afront.

  • Thanks for all the answers. No additional questions right now, we plan to meet end of June to create the characters and do other organisational stuff. So you can expect further questions then.

replied to More Crunch, Less Fluff Please
For me the games sometimes feel a bit too "crunchy". Makes me think "how can I do this within the rules" instead of just doing it. For instance I get what social manouvering was meant to accomplish but it feels a tad artificial for me. I'm not trying to discuss the game mechanics per se just to note that people have a different preference about the scale of crunchyness- fluffyness. And each game catters to a different audience, perhaps people who play OP games are more on the fluff side.In which case printing a "Rules compendium" wouldn't be economically sound....

  • I didn't think about that, nice idea.

We're now pretty sure that we;re gonna try Demon, I made the cheat sheet and asked my players to think about the character. A few more questions:

    - if you use an element to craft a cover and you lose that element due to story reasons (you pay off your covers debt, your covers dog dies etc.) does your cover deteriorate in any way?

    - if you Soul Pact a cover and that cover has stuff that could be represented by merits then you need to pay exp to represent that? And can you use cover exp to pay for those? For instance,...

  • Thank you, what I was wondering whether the demons reward and the mortals rewards can be essentially the same thing. So you either have to give something extra or pay extra, got it.

Maybe ill check Person of Interest.

  • Thanks for all the help, I'm gonna check the links posted. As for inspirations I told my players "Its kinda like playing Agent Smith from the Matrix" I'm not familiar with the other sources mentions.

    I have a 2 questions about pacts:

    - the book states that demons usually "don't give more than they take" but looking at the pact rules the willpower cost of the pact is depented on how much it favors the Demon. So is it ok a Demon to give away some freebies to lower the willpower cost? "Ok so you're willing to give me your old job if I make you rich....

  • I think what he meant is that lighting a flamable object fire indirectly (like, say by manipulating heat) is incredibly easy but your spell states "stuff ignites" which actually requires Making practice.

Yes, despite it being a simple magic trick in other games it's incredibly difficult in Mage, same as some other stuff.

  • I might be running this game and need tips/help/answers

So I gave my players a few options for our next campaign and so far 3 of 4 expressed interest in playing Demon after I gave them a cursory view of what it's about, so as long as the 4th isn't opposed to playing it, we're gonna play it. I haven't yet talked with the players about their characters etc but I want to prepare before that.

I only got the core book and I've been reading it, but some things I'm not sure off. I don't want to delve into suplements cause everyone is gonna be new to the thing so I don't want to get overwhelmed.

    1) If you build a patchwork cover...

Tbh If a player asked me if he could do what OP is describing I would propably answer "Yes you can but please, please, please, don't".

Or did I just mess up my english and that's what you're reffering to?...

Where would you place a Mage setting during WW1? Seems like an interesting time, the Free Council hasn't yet reached adulthood and the Arrow hadn't yet abandonned championing of Sleeper causes, so they though against each other on both sides.

  • I think it should be able to do it. Bans and Banes feel like those secret laws a entity must obey, higher levels of Fate can create similar effects. Also stuff like "The one ring can only be destroyed by the fires of the mountain where it was created" feel both very Fate'y and like a Bane. Off course the entity would already have to be manifested or be material to begin with (Horrors and Cryptids are a thing and can have bans of banes) Perhaps a Reach effect on a spell that reads Dooms?

And I get that Shared Fate bings destinies but what I mean here are effects that you...

  • Yeah those are core book spells but if you just limit things to that it makes the whole arcanum pretty umaginative. The core has some nice cool spells that aren't luck or destiny based (Shared Fate for instance) so I was wondering whether someone has some nice low-dot examples.

I know the Arcanum can be pretty usefull. I just want to give my player some ideas without it being "get bonus dice/rerolls" or it being incredibly safe contained like Oaths. Just some general usefull effects, found a few in this thread when i was browsing it earlier but I'd really appreciate more....

  • One of my players in my chronicle has a dot of Fate but struggles a bit what he can do with dot. Anyone got some low-dot Fate effects that aren't "You're lucky now" and "Deal with destiny in some way".

If you want specific, limited effects then look at Legacy Attainments, those are expected to be more specialised....

  • Neither. It's a good show, it had a big impact when it aired and has a big fandom but for me it never felt that revolutionary. Plot was a bit too much convoluted and required outside material to actually fully understand (other shows done that better) and the symbolism and philosophy were just pretty wrappings without any effect on the story. Also the rushed ending.

So for me it's just a good story that's a bit overhyped. It started a new trend in anime but that doesn't necessary make it a masterpiece in my understanding of the term.

Though I admit I'm the type of guy...

Another idea: if you just want an "Impression" of a Dullahan you could use veiling to make you head appear separate from the rest of the body, though the effect would be cosmetic.

  • Ok, from how I'm reading any sort of supernatural effect can be a Mystery when it comes to mage sight. This includes spells. So anything weird is a potential mystery that mages can investigate with Mage sight, whether it's a door leading to 1942, someone being posessed or a cursed painting. It would be easier to help if you mentioned what in particular are you struggling with.

Though I have to admit I started to delve into the mage sight rules recently so my understanding might be off:

I guess the question is, how large part of the content is splat-specific. Is it like Dark Erras where you'd be using something like 1/5 of the book (talking from what I heard, haven't actually read the thing) or is there a more general core to the chronicle with the splat specific parts being additions.
