I am so, so tired of just the worst nerds with absolutely terrible hot takes getting really indignant when you suggest “this entire race of people is okay to murder on sight” isn’t a good thing.

So a culture of jumping spider folk with innate illusion magic, the Anadi, have shown up in three separate Pathfinder 2e books, just one month into the new edition. I think the devs have a favorite.

Preview of an upcoming Pathfinder book that does a lovely job of showcasing diversity within the setting. I adore this.

For Pathfinder, and its primary Lost Omens campaign setting.

    121) Vibrant Huetzca (Human Sorcerer [Angelic]) was born healthy and grew up charming and strong, thanks in part to the couatl blood coursing through her veins; she had a deep love for the game of boundball from an early age, and quickly became something of a star athlete once she came of age. Now touring well beyond her home of Xopatl as her team competes across the cener of the continent, she lives not only for victory, but for the adoration of the crowd, and the glory she brings back to her home. Huetzca's dream - shared...

Given that one of the signature features of their campaign setting is an order of Lawful Neutral and Lawful Evil divine knights, is that really a surprise?...

The next book adds playable lizardfolk (now Iruxi, their own name) and hobgoblins, and the big player book next year is making orcs a full PC option as well; all have nations in the setting that are at least Neutral, and some outright good. The 2e Bestiary notes that not all gnolls are slavers or revere demons, and that outsiders misunderstand their tradition of eating the dead. This goes hand in hand with them explicitly trying to decolonize their handling of the nonwhite cultures of the setting. James Jacobs, the creative director, has talked about a distinct push in the writing to handle all...

Further good productive replies from Paizo’s creative director about being better about racism. It’s really heartening to see.

Also, I’m seeing theories that the Swashbuckler might have the Gunslinger rolled into it, which would make me giddy.

Why am I so excited for a game I don’t want to play?

Amazing how “we want to be less racist” + putting out a small mountain of content in your first year endears me to a developer.

Not that I’ll ever play it - 2e is about a thousand times too crunchy for me - but I’m glad it’s out there, and I’m looking forward to porting cool builds over into Fate instead ...

More Pathfinder news today: third Adventure Path for 2e announced (a police procedural in Absalom), and then the real huge reveal was the Advanced Player’s Guide, due out next Gen Con. Bunch of new ancestries (orcs, kobolds, catfolk, dhampir, aasimar, kobold, tengu, ratfolk, changeling, tiefling, duskwalker - and the three planetouched work with any ancestry, so you can make elf tieflings and halfling aasimar, etc), 60 new archetypes, and four new classes (bringing back Witch, Oracle, Investigator, and Swashbuckler). They said they internally treat it as one of the corebooks - they assume every...

Not sure about the Lamashtu part of that; one of the recurring themes in the 2e lore so far is doing the more nuanced, Eberron style “every race is still made up of people who make choices” thing, along with more tolerance for ‘monstrous’ ancestries generally. There’s two different peaceful orc nations mentioned in recent blog posts, there’s a concentrated effort to build relations with goblins, and the Bestiary even said that some gnolls aren’t evil at all.

So it’s less “yay evil options!” and more “some peoples aren’t being coded as inherently evil!”...

Dialect super deserved at least the Silver Ennie for Best Game that it got, but I respect Mothership enough to grudgingly accept it getting the Gold. Still surprised and sad that Dream Askew didn’t place.

Had a surprisingly productive online interaction with Paizo’s creative director about the treatment of their Romani-analogues in the setting and how poorly they’ve been handled in the past. Got a commitment to specific changes going forward! It!s not often you get to have a talk and see the outcome be “this major property will be less racist.”

They’re core. First supplement is adding playable hobgoblins, lizardfolk, and leshy....
