To the chivalry point, chivalry as we understand it today is a modern construct. Real chivalry was a birthright of the nobility where you could rape and murder and still be considered chivalrous. Here is a medievalist from the US Naval Academy on the topic:

I know the thread's not about this, but interesting to think about how the Free Council could support the argument that magic is advanced science when you think about something like this along-side the sci-fi conception of implants that let you replay memories. I've specifically got that Black Mirror episode "An Entire History of You" in mind, but the idea has a long history....

  • I would if I thought anything would come of it. They can justify it with space, but they're angry I've been supporting David Hill.

I'll let the thread gets back to its focus....

He thinks there could have been a compromise, which is alarming. And I think they're right that he's talking about the wrong Andrew. Which, you know, one white guy named Andrew Jackson, one white guy named Andrew Johnson. I'm not even being a little bit facetious, I can understand why someone would get confused if it's not their strong suit....

Speaking of Andrew Jackson, by the way, these thoughts from Civil War historians are interesting:

I would totally support this as well, and some places have done it.

Right or wrong, the removal of Confederate monuments equates the experience to the Holocaust in a lot of ways. It draws a comparison, as you did initially, to the banning of the display of Nazi paraphernalia, and the erection of stumbling stones throughout Europe....

This is where it's clear to me that you're approaching this with a set of misunderstandings that I'm not sure how to address.

The people defending these statues are the ones erasing the past. They are the ones who tell their children that Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, fought for state's rights, not for enslavement. Not all monuments are created equal. If a plaque (like the one my advisor showed me a little while back) talks about a location as a place where "slaves were sold" and Andrew Jackson planned the Battle of New Orleans, that plaque erases...

I'm not going to comment on the argument being had here, but if anyone wants to read more about the rise of mass incarceration and recent systematic racism, Elizabeth Hinton from Harvard wrote a really good book called From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime. It's about how despite how we typically think of Nixon and Reagan as starting the ridiculous mass incarceration rates we see now, where 1 in 11 black men are in prison, it actually started with Kennedy and LBJ encoding racist policies into juvenile delinquency and Great Society programs based on the assumption that black communities could...
