So I've been working on a "speedy" Dragon Blooded, and I stumbled on Burning Shadow Double that looked like a really cool way to have a "I'm so fast I create afterimages" fighter. Thing is, BSD is Simple AND requires the character being in concealment, meaning the character's stuck waiting two turns to set it up.

So where I'm getting at is: I don't get why BSD was set that way, mechanically. Is it too dangerous to allow it to be flurried with a conceal action? I could use a little bit of designer's insight to choose how I'm going to handle this.

  • I'm not completely done with the episode (20 mins to go), but I can't overstate how important it is to make players see their own Limit Breaks not as a failure state, but as their moment to shine in a horribly cool way.

My own trick is to present it as "You may treat all NPCs as furniture, and do whatever the hell you want.". (May, not must. That's important.) Everyone has a least a little bit of psychopathy that we keep under control. Limit Break is THE moment. To. Let. It. Out.

I was thinking about a maybe-corruption thing... No rush on that part though, but I'll figure something.

The Exigent of Thorn's City-Father [PEACH]

Soooo, my campaign's going full hog right now, and one of the prominent NPCs is a local rebel leader, with ties to the royal family. Thing is, I'm planning a heist inside the Autocrat's Palace, and it occured to me that it would be a perfect opportunity to reveal the fate of the City-Father of Thorns on the one hand, and to confirm the NPC's importance on the other - deep inside the Palace's catacombs, the City-Father still lives, despite being constantly tortured for over five years. A Sidereal has seen to it that the raiding party will have, locked in a lacquered box, what the City-Father had...

  • All right, let's get this party started!

Allow me to introduce Bai Hu of the West, born Amilar Taleda (and thus born in the East). Taleda was a man born with an unending and unhealthy hunger - he wanted secrets. Big secrets. While he had the intellect to become a great savant, he cared neither for research nor archeology - his calling was in pilfering the most well-protected secrets from their owners. And so Lookshy found use in his Exaltation - he would become a spy for the Legion. But they made a critical mistake - Taleda had no loyalties but to his precious secrets and little self-preservation...

  • Considering the lack of answers, I've been considering retroffiting one of my E3 antagonists to post here. Would you mind a 24h extension on the deadline?

On the "darker art" note, I've always found FromSoftware's design art to be a goldmine of ideas for a somewhat more Underworld oriented-art. Bloodborne in particular has the grotesque down pat.

Yeah, I put that there SPECIFICALLY to debunk the second hypothesis. Some games seem to take the logic that anything the PCs will do that go just slightly off-normal will trigger the FULL ANATHEMA ALERT!!! button.

I think I'm hearing a bit of a disconnect that I wanted to clear up.

Unless I'm mistaken, the current paradigm is that the average response to "human-looking being with superhuman powers" is going to be "Oh man, this guy can cause massive damage, better watch my steps".
And I'm putting this in direct opposition to a popular view of that same average response being "By the Dragons, it's not a Prince of the Earth, it has to be one of those horrible Anathema!"...

So, it'll probably be touched in the Realm, the feeling I'm getting is that Anathema is an "opt-in" categorization. You get "people with sun and moon marks" as a given, and anything else (Exigents, Getimian, Liminal, Alchemicals) is pretty much a judgment call from the local religious authority ("Yeah, no, that Exigent that happens to have been a friend is totally not an Anathema.")...

I got a similar character in my game. She went Zenith/Presence and had originaly worked with the Melee charms Wizard of Oz is mentionning + Enemy Castigating Solar Judgement, but we re-built her as a Golden Janissary (luckily, she was a spear specialist).

Honestly, Janissary in the newd DB book is everything you would need for an undead hunter. Pure Martial Arts in Dawn for an hardcore fighter, Zenith for a priestly type, Twilight for the occult hunter approach. Even Night and Eclipse could probably sell it.

  • Honestly, I'd considering trying to fuck around with Essence and mote regen levels (ESPECIALLY in-combat) as an Unforgivable Sin on par with Immortality. There has to be a catch, a big enough one that it's not a no-brainer.
I'm thinking of the Ledaal thing written in WFhW - suuuuuuure you get cosmic elemental power, but MAN are you going to pay for your 15 minutes of fame.
If you want a soft solution that doesn't {BLEEP} you up? Well, you gonna have to settle with some dice bonuses, with mild complications attached (scarcity, nearby laboratory, light aftereffects like headaches or...

  • Considering that a couple of them popped up in Rand's game, using some of the iconic Sidereal tricks,I think it's a safe asumption that yes, that a "Here's a secret Sidereal for your games to tide you over until we get around to that book"....
