Also, because of that obfuscation of information, they don't necessarily know they're Solar Anathema – they're still alive and in control of their body afterall, so it can't be a body-snatching sorcerer-demon.
For all they (those that don't get a visit from Sol) know they somehow Exalted as an Exigent or something.

  • Ok. then we fundamentally disagree *shrug*

Melee and Brawl are about much more than just "breaking things". What you're describing is a Feat of Strength.

At this point, I'm pretty sure our ideas aren't at all compatible, since they differ on a fundamental game-principles level, so I'm bowing out.

On one hand, I get how you're "manipulating" your body. But on the other, that's not what Manipulation means...

  • Oh, ok, I misread your intention there, sorry.
In that case I think it'd be more appropriate to learn to make tools from your hands before making weapons. It feels more like a progression.

    Fair enough.

Thing is, the Charm itself is already intrinsically more limited than CNNT in that you're still working as though you had tools, you're not e.g. shaping steel as though it was clay as CNNT, you still need a source of heat and still need to pound it for hours. Taking it down yet another notch just for the sake of it seems entirely unnecessary to me. Just because...

  • Eh, not really? it just says it strengthens hands and sharpens claws, and gives them a superficial resemblance. It can be taken to mean shapeshifting, but it can also just mean "you make a screwdriver shape with your hand" without involving shapeshifting.

I can't find the 2e version (does it even exist? Exalted wiki has only the 1e version), so I'm not sure what problem you're talking about. 1e THT came out of Shaping the Ideal Form and had no relation to Body Weapon Technique.

Personally, I'd keep them completely separate, aside from maybe a synergy...

  • THT doesn't literally shapeshift your hand into a tool. It enhances existing features. Your fist stays a fist, it's just reinforced to punch in nails. Your claws stay claws, they're just sharpened for climbing or sawing....

How does "hearing as though it wasn't there" not allow you to hear around corners or up floors?

Also it's not really fair to compare it to Keen Hearing Tech. Keen Hearing is a second charm, Deep-Listening Palm is a first; Sensory Acuity Prana (a first Awareness charm) doesn't boost your ability to hear through things (beyond doubling 9s)....

  • Depending on the specifics, I'd treat it at about the level of giving a supernatural power.
I think mortal sorcerers are meant to seek immortality through other beings; e.g. Mara might grant the boon of a working of immortality in exchange for a regular supply of souls.
e.g.2: In Tanith Lee's Death's Master, Death shares a path to immortality with a mortal witch (regularly drinking a potion made from specific bones), in exchange for her guarding a place essentially forever.

Now I'm picturing Terrestrial Architects just *stuffing* their architecture with weapons. ALL the weapons; stuffed to the brim with 'em. So that its residents can just touch a wall or column and pull out a sword in case of a surprise raid.

It also depends on what the survival tree is about. Presumably, if there's a fact-introducing Charm in there, it means that there's some amount of terrain-control magic happening that would allow you to do things that Lore alone wouldn't.

    *shrug*
Solar Stealth allows you to roll Dex + Stealth to join battle and grows into an awesome tree from that. That you find it to be thin and unconvincing is a problem others don't have....

Being able to introduce a fact with Survival goes beyond just substituting a dot rating; it also means being able to boost the roll with Survival Charms. Remember that DBs don't get excellencies.

You're introducing a Fact with a Survival roll. Usually that's a Lore roll with a requirement of Lore 3+.
Also, you're dictating the existence and location of a thing (within limits) instead of praying to the ST that whatever-it-is exists somewhere nearby maybe.

    e.g.:
    - The Anathema NPC is fleeing north, faster than you can keep up.
    - *rolls WWF* No worries, there's a sharp cliff that way, known (and avoided) for its viper dens. We'll corner the demon and slay it; that is, if the vipers don't do our job for us.

Without the Charm, the ST would just go...

And? If you were to "read as written" you wouldn't be carrying tags over from one section to the other. Since *as written* tags in the Melee Weapons section apply to Melee weapons. Applying them outside their section is going beyond what's written....

I mean, yeah, one can homebrew whatever they want, but if the question is being asked it's usually in relation to rules-as-written or rules-as-intended, not to homebrew.

But also, it's reasonable to assume there's a good reason for this (since the original devs did spend years writing and re-writing the system to perfect it, on top of playtesting).

For example, allowing a ranged Smashing attack, would create a situation where ranged fighters have a strategy by which their enemies can never advance due to throwing attacks being able to knock them down; on top of Withdraw...

The non-existence of the Chopping and Piercing tags in thrown weapons implies this isn't possible RAW, since all relevant tags are repeated by section (e.g. Bashing and Lethal are defined both in Melee Weapons and in Thrown Weapons, implying tags aren't meant to carry-over from section to section)....
