Legions are often under-strength (The Realm, Page 71): "These numbers are largely theoretical. In peacetime, as much as 20 percent of a legion’s strength may be unavailable due to troops on leave or detached duty. Numbers can drop even more precipitously in wartime, when there aren’t always enough competent skirmishers or recruits available to replace casualties."

Sargeants (Fanglords) are NCOs (The Realm, page 70).

Commissioned Officers are Scalelords and above, and they are not included in the count (Word of Vance: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/m...e...

  • So... the UK lockdown has moved to local lockdowns and I live in the worst area in the county. Yay me. As such we've moved to remote play. Which... just... sucks. Honestly, I don't know if we're going to persist with this -- but let's go with what we've got.

The plan is to wrap the Realm Civil War with victory for the PCs in 10 sessions.

    ****

    Session 61 – Two Weddings and a Murder – Reya (185XP 148DX, 179/143 spent; 9GP 30SP), Melody (185XP 148DX, 176/146 spent), and Ganan (185XP 148DX, 182/148 spent; 8WhP 44GP 52SP)

    Content warning: Violence/death/gore....

    Minor note:

The Heptagram takes 12 students a year. But not all of those will be sorcerers. Likewise, the Realm has many sorcerers who aren't trained at the Heptagram - the House of Bells, Spiral Academy, Pasiap's Stair and the Cloister of Wisdom all explicitly train sorcerers, and there are several other sorcerous academies listed in Heirs (including The Balustrade of Glorious Harmony and The Forge of Mother’s Fury).

I'd estimate a few of hundred sorcerers in Ysyr. Bronze Age Greece had, what, 800,000 people? So say... one in a thousand Ysyr are sorcerers? 800-ish...

    Melody: I hate Roll20.
    *Rolls*
Melody: Seventeen successes. I love Roll20.

    Other gems:

Reya: I go to wherever Octavian isn't.

    Ganan: Hold on... that's illegal!

Ganan: You’re just going to have to spend the night with your wife.
    Terel (NPC): Noooooo!

Melody: Well... one out of four isn't bad?

Melody: You stabbed him in the spear arm! Yes, he yields!

Melody: You both have terrible taste in men.

Oban (NPC): We leave on the morrow.
Reya: I'm not fooling for that

Sorry, I could have sworn I linked this: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/m...e-devs/page390

Your RAW interpretation is correct by Word of Vance.

Here's a mostly applicable ruling on Charm throws too: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/m...06#post1156006...

I would rule that counter grapples reduce rounds of control, like Flare.

If only because of Charms that throw your target.

  • Further to the "well mortals can do it", Lunars were also 1st Circle only until 3E. So it's not really about "slots".

I don't see why a Dragon-Blooded can't make zombies or summon ghosts. I'd say do away with Dragons of a Different Color and just give them all access to 1CN....

  • Yeah, I'd be much happier if this had elemental variants that did elemental things rather than being generic.

It's fine to have a multi-element block, but IDK, maybe
Water Aura rerolls 1&2s, Fire Aura burns away Initiative, etc.....

We're straying firmly into homebrew territory now, but yes. That's exactly how I handled it. Of course a Dynast might have horns, but of course they're not beast-folk -- they are a Dynast with horns. Totally different. *cough**cough*...

If it helps, I squared that circle by making beast-folk a maligned under-caste used for slave labour....

3E, we don't know enough about heaven.

    Old Lore/Homebrew:

At the very least, the Games of Divinity are tied to heaven's sky. So if you broke into the Pleasure Dome and hacked the Games, I reckon you could skywrite your message.

A heaven wide PA system may or may not fit with one's image of heaven. It certainly fits mine.

Some kind of mass communication Sorcerous Working might see you right.

Or just an old school open letter to the fat, arrogant, anticharismatic, Creation-wide embarrassment. Slap each other in the press and don't...

    3E RAW:

    A) Anyone can just turn up and attune to the manse. You have to be in it to block it.
    B) You can't.

    Old Lore/Homebrew:

    A) You could probably have a working or something to extend the powers of the Hearthstone to manse control.
    B) Disrupting the geomancy of the manse, or shattering the Hearthstone, or some niche sorcery might suffice....

I'm against stopping the doom entirely....

  • "Magnanimity of the Unstoppable Icon" is a Solar War Charm, page 421 of 3E Core. When your opponent rallies for numbers, some of their forces swap sides and join you.

"Hidden Thorn Treachery" is a Dragon-Blooded War Charm, page 282 of WFHW. Your spies have infiltrated enemy command and cause enemy troops to defect to your cause.

  • Who is using the Charm and what effect is it having on the story?

If it's an NPC predicting doom on your PC's hometown... why are you even using a Charm?

If it's a PC using the powers they've invested in, why do you want to block them?

I'm not interested in discussing the Charm in a vacuum, because it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Dogstar Ruminations is the mechanical representation of a PCs ability -- it doesn't exist as a discreet, in universe thing. It's only function is it's function as an RPG power at the tabletop.

    At the tabletop, I don't...

I'm going to go ahead and assume you mean Cathak Drogath (who beats up his Patrician tutor then turns the Five Metal Shrike on his childhood lover).

I'd say "pretty susceptible". His 2E arc was all about a vicious Dynast siding with the Anathema to murder his childhood sweetheart... so... a Solar Lore Charm that Instills Anathema Intimacies seems a sensible way of getting there.

Pretty sure it's whatever Parry value you actually applied to try and block the attack.

So if you had Parry 6 and spent four motes to go up to Parry 8, but they roll 9 successes to hit you then you apply 8 extra Natural Soak or 4 Hardness.

    Who?

    (Book/page/edition would be helpful here.)...

I just play them as humans.

I'd love to say "weird humans", but, uh, let's be honest here -- weird compared to what?

I had a beautiful noble who kept court and made many secret dealings as he unravelled the secrets to ancient Solar magic... But in play, I don't think I actually RPed him any differently to any of the human nobles.

I mean, sure, his army was made from the nightmares of children and dragons... and he bled a thick white tree sap... and he moved not by muscle but by invisible strings of Essence that flung him around like a marionette......

I play it as three dice (stopped by Hardness 1, DBs immune).

Three levels is... nasty. Like, even if that is the rule, I would suggest house-ruling that.
