Back when I participated in the old WotC CharOp boards it was customary to include reasoning when making guides such as these. I find it difficult to evaluate the utility of your guide when the underlying logic is hidden.

  • Yeah, Evocations have gone through a few different design paradigms; I recall at one point John hinted you could focus primarily on the Artifact for your progression. Obviously that didn't pan out on the whole, but I personally think the best Artifacts shape your combat style without feeling like you're jumping through hoops....

Exactly this. Of course Solars are going to get the most powerful stuff, and of course they will have the broadest access. Evocations aren't intended to reopen the splat parity argument. It's another dimension of power for Exalts to pursue; it doesn't rewrite the themes of Exalted.

If a player wants access to the most power with the most Artifacts, they should play a Solar....

Yeah, I think the OC distaste of the Dissonant Keyword has to be weighed against the IC nature of Artifacts. Making Artifacts is frikking hard for most Exalted, and Artifacts are frikking rare. I think most every Exalt isn't going to turn up their nose at an Artifact, even if they are Dissonant. Rather, they will see it as a valuable addition to their personal power, OR a great way to empower their allies OR a powerful, unique bargaining chip.

It's a little like someone saying they wouldn't want a high-performance BMW unless it had a specific, extra-expensive handling package....

This gets into the old problem where fans of a given splat will complain monstrously at "their" kind being penalized. There's really only three "tiers" to use, and the weakest Exalts happen to be near the top in this category. On top of that, Ex3 is trying to move away from the Ex2 situation where playing an Exalt meant accepting a color scheme for your magical toys. Oh, and we can't forget this entire mechanic is an attempt to avoid the three-tier Evocation theory that was set to make Artifact descriptions five pages long. There are many competing design goals in this...

  • I assume Lunars will have some charms related to Crafting, but they will be filtered through their particular themes. It's not going to be so straight forward as adding more slots, dice, etc. This is a natural side effect of moving away from Lunars having I Can't Believe They Aren't Solar Charms(tm)....

This is exactly my point, yes. If being Akuma is cooler than being (just) Exalted, then Exalted has failed at its core premise. Thus, there is a need to write everything else in the setting as narratively compelling (from the stance of PC Exalts) but ultimately not set them up as "upgrades."

    === Regarding Quotations ===

Generally speaking, I think taking single-sentence quotations from an author whose body of work spans years and thousands of pages (much more if we count forum posts), is unhelpful. What Neph thought on March 23rd 2003 is not a great way...

I agree it's complex, but I still feel it all boils down to making being the Exalted the intended and desirable play experience. If the developer for V:tM wrote so much on dhamphirs and gave them so much cool stuff that everyone wanted to play them instead of Vampires, most game designers would consider that a failure state. The Mountain Folk are cool, yes, but they primarily exist as foils and hooks for Solar and Terrestrial PCs.

I also think this thread is in danger of falling into the same hole the old forum did: we are using the same words with other definitions. In this case,...

  • Why would the religious leader 'believe' in a rainbow turtle? This is Creation; gods simply exist. If your religious leader follows Kamu Orasha, the Turtle of a Hundred Hues, then he's a real god. That doesn't stop the UCS from showing up with a message, and that message doesn't invalidate the faith of the character. Now, rather than Sol deceiving his Zeniths by impersonating their gods, the Zenith can have an honest and difficult conversation with themselves and others about whether or not to abandon their old god and follow only the Unconquered Sun.

    My current Zenith was essentially...

  • 1) And compared to the desires of the players involved; that's a couple lines of setting fluff. Frankly, within the context of Ex3, it doesn't matter if Sol looks at Creation or up his own ass; he's not doing anything.

    2) You are technically correct, and yet utterly miss my point. The vision from the UCS for the Zenith is part and parcel of their priesthood. A player who chooses a Zenith may really want that experience, and their desires for their game are paramount.

"You are incarnation 124 of this Zenith Caste, who will hear nothing from your patron. Like...

I have a question about Stealth and the Unexpected attack rules. I might be overthinking it, but I want to check.

    Emphasis mine.

The first paragraph reads to me like a character can be in a big, active fight, and even have begun spending motes and such on defense, and get ambushed. The second paragraph implies a character must not know they are in combat for an attack to be an ambush.

    Which is it?...

  • I would not want to deny a player their moment of glory based on a couple sentences of setting fluff. It's pretty uncool to tell a PC their Zenith matters less than those who Exalt ten years later.

Maybe the scene is of a weary Sol. He's had more than a thousand years of these same few Chosen reincarnating again and again. He feels it, even if he doesn't want to. He knows they die. The flame of his wrath has cooled into melancholy.

So, rather than give some inspiring speech, or an answering machine, he gets the positively Byronic Ignis Divine, and can actually t...

Dude, how do you define heroism as anything other than the will to engage the world and change it, regardless of risk?

GCG himself wrote Exalted as an ode to the Great Man theory of history. The setting is built brick by brick to explore the concept of these people with the power, the will, and the ambition to be greater than most people.

Akuma have tons of power; yet they dance on the strings of their nigh-omnipotent masters. Even their thoughts are not their own. That's a horrific way to live, and WW already had a double fistful of games to sell people for that kind...

A question about Strategic Maneuvers that is relevant to my game tomorrow:

    Relevant text:

How do the resulting stratagems affect the heroes involved? For example, My Circle of Solars, with their Dragon of elite troops, wins a Strategic Maneuver roll against a Wyld Hunt and their Talon of elite troops. I choose to impose the ambush stratagem. Both sides have Battle Groups heroes that will act individually. In these two groups, who gains the bonuses, and who suffers the penalties?

I ask this because the text makes clear that a 'normal' Exalted combat...

Neph was a great guy and a talented writer. I learned more about gaming from reading his posts than I ever did reading a WW ST chapter. I don't know that his style would gel well with Ex3, but my favorite never-will-be RPG is an Exalted edition done start to finish with him as the lead dev.

    replied to Is Mara Mara?
I described Mara once off-hand to my non-gamer, Buddhist GF and she immediately connected the dots between them. I think the inspiration is pretty clear, and totally in keeping with Exalted's goal of drawing from Eastern culture and religion as opposed to Western culture and religion.

Mechanically, Neph was working within the paradigm given. He didn't decide on the cheap perfects : overwhelming attacks dichotomy. He did have to work within it.

As for 'mortals don't matter', the meaning of that statement was warped far out of context by the fans, and John and Holden were happy to use it as a weapon to push for their vision of Exalted. I actually quite like the direction Ex3 is headed, but that doesn't make 2E all bad, nor does it make Neph's contributions objectively bad.

I will also agree with Irked that by far Neph's greatest quality was his willingness...

You're right. All writers suck sometimes. I'm a writer; sometimes I'm completely disgusted with my material. Some days I write bad code at my day job, and then I have to fix it or rewrite it. I'm still expected to make (most) of my deadlines, and to communicate when things aren't going as planned, AND to make up for it.

If I can't do that, then I have to find another way to earn money and feed my cat....
