    What to Tell New Players

As a followup to my last post about whether or not to use M20, I'm trying to decide what my players need to read, and how much I should tell them. Most of my players are familiar with a version of the ST system (Ex3). Most are not familiar with even the lore of oWoD and definitely not Mage.

Part of me thinks this is a great opportunity; they can make vanilla mortals and experience the World of Darkness IC without any OC baggage. On the other hand, I'm not sure what, if anything, I should have them read from the books before we start.

I think the basic rule set is necessary...

The Templars "taste" like the Technocracy to me, and I could see a Traditionalist with magic like an Assassin (paging the Euthanatos), but I don't think it's a perfect fit. Honestly, the themes used for the Technocracy and the Templars are fairly normal for "bad guys" in Western media....

One of my selling points for Mage is "fewer rules than Exalted," so the plopping won't be that helpful. Hyper-linked PDF sounds pretty swank, though....

Thanks to everyone for the helpful replies. It seems worth it to me to invest in the PDF and see how I feel about it. I'm a bit leery of huge physical books after Ex3.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies.

I have paged through the quickstart PDF. It's actually what made me consider buying M20 at all.

I have attempted to run Mage for two of my players in the past, and the big issues for them were things like paradigm and foci use. A little more beef around that would probably save me some gray hairs.

On the other hand, I do not need all that fluff, though a breakdown of the various metaplot elements could give me some material. I'm repurposing the Avatar Storm, for example.

As a follow-up, would it be...

M20: Worth it for my Game?

It looks like my group's current game is ending, and I find myself with an opportunity to maybe, possibly, finally introduce them to Mage. Currently I have a few copies of Mage Revised, and I'm not sure if I should invest in M20, and ask my players to do the same.

A few things about the game I'm planning to run:
    • I'm dumping about 90% of the fluff around the Traditions, Crafts, and the Technocracy. I'm replacing it with my own Mage groups, some of which draw vague inspiration from canon.
    • I'm drastically changing the overall metaplot, for example the Ascension War simply never

One thing to note is the Realm does use conscripts and janissaries, One way to keep your vassal states in line is to take a decent number of their youth and wisk them off to fight wars in foreign lands for you. Additionally, while I'm sure the Realm officially doesn't hire mercenaries, wealthy Dynasts operating in the Threshold almost certainly maintain paid forces in addition to their formal House Legions.

In my Creation, I pulled some numbers and played around with things. The result was the Realm had 80 Imperial Legions that were formally under the Empress' control. She managed...

  • Maybe I'm bringing my personal biases in, but to me all this "How will the Lunars react!?" talk reminds me a lot of the problems of 2E with a new coat of paint. In 2E, of course, people recoiled from things like the Bond and the Silver Solar charms. I can see a few years from now people finding the Love-Hate-Fear dynamic a little tiresome, too. When do these great heroes move past their little serial numbers and start acting like characters?

So, I'm importing a small bit of V:tM thinking to keep the setting fresh. "Exalts are people first, heroes second, and Chosen...

Maybe it's my reading of 2E talking, but I find the Empress' Realm quite organized. It is deliberately constructed to preserve and extend her power, and function only with her in place as a strong executive, plans for a transition of power are deliberately avoided. It's a proto-fascist / Stalinist state.

I'd see a Fire Aspect building an empire based more on personal loyalty, delegation of authority to trusted individuals, with intimidation and brutal violence used to maintain order, more like a drug cartel or the stereotypical banana republic. In that model, rules and organization...

  • I find the Star Trek comparison quite apt. When I read Ifraja, I thought "Well, I might be get one session out of him if the players decide to care."

I also agree in the future it would be better to make one character with more attached mechanical bits and plot hooks. And since we are discussing wordcount, it bears mentioning that including the canon spells was a waste of space. If the line were older and that material was in supplements people might not own, it's valid. In this case, people can't play Exalted without the core book, which has those spells.
