  • I understand that 1E material is considered more salient for Ex3 than 2E material, but I fail to see how Luna is improved by making her a consort first, and a power second. I also fail to see how giving Gaia more limelight helps the setting enable my stories.

If we are looking at this from an historical perspective, I would say those lines were written in the first book published for a completely new game line, and they seem to be never referenced again. It was pretty normal for WW to stealth-retcon in such a fashion, and this appears to be another case. GoD talks mostly about...

  • In the leak there was a sidebar about Demon Queens who ruled over a Kingdom. While I doubt all (or even most) Demons would do something so simple as conquest, I think it's informative regarding this topic. Even 2nd Circle Demons are incredibly powerful, and even those who aren't "fighty" possess the kind of power that induces most mortals to avoid them or attempt to curry favor with them.

Additionally, the question itself comes with a dubious premise: that mortals would find it advantageous to simply attack a free Demon. Again, it's a powerful spirit. Why not offer it...

The simple fact that Nefvarin had never heard of the Empress is not a good basis for inference. The Shogunate had orders of magnitude more DBs than the Age of Sorrows, and towards the end they were caught in a multi-front, Creation-wide civil war. The simple fact a Chumyo had never heard of the Empress means only that she was a young officer, as the fluff tells us.

I think when the book says the Empress has great Breeding, we should accept that as intended: useful, omniscient narrator information. The alternative somewhat undermines the Realm as the main bastion of Dragon-Blooded...

  • I'd say my experiences largely mirror others. The only people I know who actively play Exalted are the people I play with. Of those, three were completely new to RPGs, and the other two are members of my group from way back.

The events of the last few years, including the content lull, hit us kinda hard. Honestly, if we didn't already have a game in mind that was Exalted, I doubt we would be playing it now.

My headcanon is the Empress deliberately obliterated references to her name and gives it to no one. Giving her a name makes her a person, rather than a power. I agree it seems strange all the fluff skips over this point, though....

This is one place the social influence system shines. Uncover the target's Intimacies, find appropriate material, and then Persuade/Bargain/Threaten citing the Intimacy.

Personally, I have always preferred not to think too deeply about the Empress as a person, primarily because her narrative purpose is to get the hell outta the way and make the world ripe for PC shenanigans.

If the setting exists to enable play, then I only need to know the Empress was ruthless, stunningly competent, and likely not coming back. If she does come back, it will only be when her reappearance creates more instability.

Also, pretty sure Arms is PDF-only, so that cuts out a few steps at the end.

I like that this mechanic allows DB charms to be individually powerful without allowing them to stack together. It means they can have extra cool toys without being too powerful for their type

I also like that this feels like Avatar without actually being Avatar.

The thing about the ST system is that statistically even two or three dice is a huge advantage, but there is no floor. I've watched people with 30 dice pools lose to people with half that number, and I've seen someone with only three dice more just run roughshod over people.

You're right of course about normal distribution, but if you want normalized integer generation, d100 soundly produces better results with less effort, ya know?

The ST system was put together by people who wanted to focus less on rules and mechanical fidelity and more on story. Sometimes Werewolfs...

Yeah, this thread smells like the old 2E problem again. Lunars can't be this, shouldn't be that, definitely aren't this other thing, and so on. The result is people can't be happy because Lunars are nothing. No themes, no flavor, just bland, silver, anodyne paste....

Well, if you want people to be mechanically unkillable, then Ex2 is probably more desirable.

I understand your feelings in this regard, and I actually agree with them. I've just accepted that the ST system is not a firm foundation to build that on. And "so old they can't be defeated" is the antithesis of the Ex3 design goals.

I too have searched for a system that does what you mention well, and I've largely failed. Aberrant promises that sort of play, but it's even more absurdly broken than Ex2. M&M somewhat gets there (it's not great for Exalted),...

    replied to Ammunition Check survey
Our current ST used to loathe tracking ammunition in DnD and Shadow Run, so we are assumed to have whatever ammo we need, within reason.

When I was the ST, I treated it much the same way, though in a couple fights against BGs I built tension by telling them they were running out of ammo. This led to them stunting stealing ammo from their dead enemies/allies.

TL;DR: No ammo checks or ammo tracking in my group.

As a subjective, in-setting demarcation, this makes more sense. My only question then is who actually has the kind of sweeping knowledge of history in order to create something like this?...

If I had to choose between traditional Ex2 and your modified Ex3, I would cautiously go with Ex3, simply because it's not objectively borked in implementation (and I'm unwilling to compile all the 2.5 errata into the existing charm set in a playable way).

That said, I think you should be prepared for the math to crack wide open. The ST system gets statistically swingy and unwieldy at those levels, not to mention the annoyance of rolling that many dice and counting them for every little thing.

The other consequence is you will re-introduce the Elder Problem with a vengeance....

I think it's entirely plausible for Lunars to live on the rim of Creation, and if quiet enough, be mostly unmolested. They, however, don't make for very interesting stories, and Essence fever makes it unlikely for a young (read: PC) Lunar to manage this for long.

There are large swathes of Creation where the Realm has little presence, yes. But there are still Outcaste Dragon-Blood families and rulers, there are Sidereals, and the Realm is quite capable of projecting power into the Deep Threshold to kill a particularly elusive Lunar. If the Lunar actually acts against the powers...

  • I believe Hardness 1 is sufficient to prevent damage from anima flux. Situational, of course, but worth mentioning.

In my revised Craft system, I added in masterwork bonuses that reduce the need for maintenance and make it harder to break the item in question. It was the closest I could get to this feeling without stepping on the weapon/armor math (and it's a bad idea to do that)....

On the first point, the old devs saw fit to nuke that entire line of discussion from orbit. The Usurpation was a cataclysm that cost the world much.

As for the rest, I'm not sure you can helpfully divide the "good" part of the First Age into faith-based rule and the "bad" part of the First Age into knowledge-based rule. I see the "technological" arc as continuing essentially constantly the whole way through. If anything, Night would represent the Age of Nightmares, where Solar madness and tyranny has snuffed the light from the First...
