That analogy's not really on-point; if you have no body, obviously you can't use any disciplines at all. But, do you need massive bulging muscles to use Potence? Do you need an increased muscle mass to use Potence? Does your body become denser or armor plated because Fortitude? If we don't see the expected physical characteristics manifesting from other disciplines, why should Flight be different? If my sensory organs don't physically change to explain use of Auspex, why should Flight require wings?

Vampire disciplines are mystical and only have physical changes associated with them...

  • This is a bit shattered mirror for me, because my last character... Was a 20 year old (at time of embrace) female Tremere neonate, embraced in 2008. Who just so happened to fall for a Toreador girl!! Not a Methuselah though, so the similarities stop pretty quick.

Back on the subject, if I were playing that Tremere, the answer is pretty simple; go with it and see where it takes me. Pretend the Brujah never told me what might be the truth, let my Tory gal-pal either have her ruse, tell me when she's ready, or find out the Brujah lied, but all played out as it... Well, plays out. Feign...

I could be wrong, but I don't require anywhere specifically saying Flight is limited to Gargoyles (the only vamps with wings as default) or mentioning wings as needed. Good rule of thumb is if a discipline doesn't say it can only be learned by a specific clan/bloodline, or mention any other restrictions, then anyone can learn it. With a proper teacher/circumstance, of course.

Jean-Philippe the Toreador taking Natalia the elder Tzimisce to a place where she can pick up a quick change of clothes after their ship sank (different ship).

JP: "So... I don't suppose you know what size you are, eh Nat? It's more of a modern thing. You can buy pre-made clothing now instead of waiting on a tailor, or however you did things back then."

Natalia: "What is this... Size? I am this size." Natalia gestures down her body, an eyebrow raised inquisitively.

JP: "Size, like... Your measurements. How broad around you are, how...

IDK about B:tB&tB. I'm basing my understanding of Batman's infatuation with revealing his identity to women he wants to "show around the Bat Cave" on the movies starting with Burton and ending with Shumacker, comics (depending on the writer) and to a lesser extent on the entire history of cartoon portrayals. And his whole thing with Catwoman... I mean, that's in every depiction.

These aren't extremes; they're his standard fare. Batman could damn near almost be a Toreador, cuz pretty ladies break his Bat Brain like nothing else. Hell, he even knocked up the daughter of...

  • So, the coterie for my last (V20) game, which technically isn't cancelled yet just on hiatus, consisted of:

A Tzimisce from the Dark Ages who recently awoke from torpor, saw what her clan had become in the modern nights and felt disgusted. Unaffiliated with any sect, though informally a member of the Camarilla because everyone else around her is.

A French Toreador whose sire is the Prince in the area the game centers around, and acts as the local "trouble shooter" for his sire. Also a father by adoption. Has taken in about a dozen wayward NPCs. Easily the "face"...

We have numerous examples of Bruce de-cowling in exchange for sex with his latest lover (movies) and letting Catwoman get away with the same type of crimes he's hospitalized people for, just because she's a pretty.

    So at least since 1940....

  • Silly stuff? Oh, I have some silly stuff for you.

~A conversation came up at the table about which vampire, mage, werewolf, mummy, changeling, ghost or whatever controls the president, if any. In the end, it was decided that the president is controlled by three vampires, a half dozen technocrats, a single lonely BSD, two different demons, at least seventeen psychics, and between one and fifteen changelings. Each one's control cancels out the others', leaving the president fully under his own wits and control. This has been the state of affairs since the late 60s, for every president...

  • I've been doing that a lot for a while now, complete with new "clans" and retooling a lot of KotE stuff into more VtM-style mechanics. All of my vampire-types use the same V20 basics; blood pools, Generation, Humanity/Paths of Enlightenment, etc. But with different flavor texts and wholly different "origin stories" and, for lack of a better term, biology. Eastern vampires might have blood pools and generation, but European kindred can't diablerize them any more than they can diablerize a garou. They're different animals entirely. Similarly, I've come up with half a dozen "American...

"I come from a time when travel was done by horse or by foot, when most people never left a five mile area around their home, and I crossed the whole of Europe, alone and unaided. I come from a time when a woman such as I could never and would never hold land or title, yet I earned my own land, my own title, my own castle. I come from a time when death lurked around every corner, yet I survived, I thrived, and I overcame. When the armies of the new god came upon my lands, I fought them back with sword and my soldiers at my back. And when my sire came upon me and forced upon me the Embrace,...

  • See, this is a matter of personal preference (well, all of this has been) but as much as I have my own personal favorite canon NPCs, I use them as templates rather than including them in my game. Losing them doesn't have the same impact to me as someone who utilizes them. But I'm someone who is very invested in the scale of things; when running a game about saving the world, you should see the world, a game about personal horror will take place in a small region. Things like that. So seeing a bunch of cities I'm not using getting taken out by an organization clearly labels that group not as a...

  • Clearing out cities isn't proof of their awesomeness. Clearing out cities makes them an earthquake, tornado, tsunami, forest fire or other natural disaster.

Attacking the Vienna chantry made them awesome. If it had been that, followed by some high profile takedowns of important kindred, preferably named NPCs, then they are a deadly threat, but still a relatable threat (though I'd argue we'd still need more names associates with the SI). But when they can list multiple cities cleared out of kindred, they're not a relatable threat; they're an environmental one that you can't predict...

Obfuscate has to be higher than 2. Batman is such a master of disguise, he can wear a disguise over his cowl. The cowl with the giant pointy ears. He just puts a human face mask on, and suddenly the ears are gone. Pre-V5, since I'm less familiar with V5 disciplines, he must have Obfuscate 5. He runs around with a little kid wearing bright yellow, red and green, sometimes wearing tights but other times wearing briefs and booties. No way is that kid hiding anywhere unless Batman's Cloak the Gathering the boy.

Obfuscate 5. No arguing allowed ever at all in forever....

  • A World of Darkness (both editions) also had plenty of info on London (well, England in general). But as someone mentioned, it's not really about London specifically and more about the comic book event-like way the SI was presented using London, Vienna, etc. "We got this brand new enemy organization, and they are BAD!!! Like, dude, in no time at all, they took out the mutan-err, vampires in all these major cities!! They blew up the Tremere secret base!! They are everywhere, including hiding under your bed right now!! Second Inquisition!!! So metal!!!"

    Again, it's about implementation....

  • Usually to some degree yes, but on two occasions they've gone... Overboard maybe?

I had my entire chronicle plans utterly derailed because my players got hooked on my non-canon version of France in VtM. To be fair, there was a long-thought-deceased bloodline (rumored to be a 14th clan purged from historical records) directly ripped off from Holy Blood Holy Grail, an appearance by Boudica (a Nosferatu), secret vaults in cemetaries filled with traps, and so much more. Most of which hadn't been initially planned (more reacting to sudden and unexpected events), nor did it have anything...

  • YMMV on all the reasons you might like or dislike V5. Keep that in mind going forward. But there are some trends in many people's issues.

Mechanically, V5 seems as far removed from VtM1e to V20 as VtR is to VtM1e to V20. From first edition onward through V20, while the rules may change, they're tweeks to what came before more than a whole new set of rules. V5 feels more than that; it feels, to me, like an entirely different game. From the new hunger mechanics to how disciplines are handled.

And then there's the story. Oh, the story.

    So remember how V20 was...

  • You should probably read that survey, because it's not saying what you think it's saying. Religious or mystical experience. Not ghosts, not demons, not even the belief in a religion; a "moment of sudden religious insight or awakening", as stated in the article. Believing in god does not equate to believing in vampires, werewolves, wizards, ghosts, faeries, etc.

Again; if you're saying "it's the opposite of what you just said", and I'm saying "a minority", then what are you trying to say if not "a majority"? Please be specific,...

  • Ok, based on what? I mean, clearly not based on anything published, because we know from repeated statements in the published works that the majority of humanity (the only assumption of quantity I've made) do not believe in the supernatural. So where do you get a "much higher" number than "the minority of people"? Where does your assumption of "the majority (the only possible interpretation of "much higher than the minority") of people believe in the supernatural evil" stem from?

Since we're reducing each others' points down to just the...
