  • The reason I use is the Abyss. The Abyss is both a part of their plan and the thing that limits the Exarchs. As powerful as they are, they cannot risk paradox themselves. Unfortunately this excuse of mine made mooore sense in 1st Edition back when we had vulgar magic, but, the Exarchs prefer subtlety for the same cardboard world argument that any Superman would make, and the Abyss is always at-the-ready for the Exarchs to lose patience and cause a paradox.

We're safe only because of the Lie itself, in a way.

So yes, transfiguration gives them absolute narrative control...

The idea that the game is even ALLOWED to have happy moments (even minor ones) is new to me....

  • when you put it like that, but, the major difference is so huge that it makes them worlds apart.

The Exarchs are *here*, they're awake and lucid and they already won. The antideluvians are asleep right? There is still time?

But the Exarchs have won and the higher of "tier" you play in the more real they get. Their existence is less mythical than even the Oracles. The Exarchs are such a more Orwellian threat than the Antideluvians. The Antideluvians touch on primal horrors and capture the feeling of more lovecraftian tones, so if you wanted to go with that I'd...

  • How so? I was thinking that neurons are either firing or not, a binary. Is that not accurate?

In terms of architecture and HOW you flip the bits I'd completely agree....

  • The brain is essentially a computer, and can theoretically be understood completely. If Life reflects behavioral and physiological psychology (who I disagree with philosophically) then Mind covers cognitive psychology, which is the one I personally think figures out how people actually *think* better.

Even so, you CAN get a lot done with Life if you know what symbols to manipulate. Perhaps science can be used as a yantra or effect fine-control neurotransmitter spells, at least til Life 5 cuz at Life 5 theres no way you can't figure this out with mage sight or knowing whats gonna happen....

  • You know Voltaire and Rick Sanchez and what a weird juxtoposition THAT IS, and similar, all talk about how intelligence leads to suffering and alienation to the meaninglessness of life, all life, not just our modern world?

Ever hear people question if true superintelligent AIs would kill themselves because the burden of intelligence is too philosophically great?

Lets assume in the Chronicles of Darkness having a soul prevents this. The more intelligent you are, the more you need some spiritual substance to tolerate it, like a soul.

    Dogs don't need souls....

  • Umm... what? Whats that got to do with sanctity of merits? It doesn't matter how the merit goes defunct (eldritch horror) you still have sanctity and can get a new merit!...

  • what they are saying is an ST is honor-bound to protect your merits, and sanctity or merits protects your merits from the other players, well-meaning or no.

But relinquished spells are not protected. My previous ST would actually "grief" my relinquished spells or otherwise make them useless. I can see players trolling at least a little, and Seers even from a great ST are a huge threat. Politics may require someone to attend meetings or go somewhere where having any active spells looks bad so you might lose spells on yourself that way too. Maybe someone can suppress the magic...

  • Im glad Dave confirmed that relinquishing is why crafters are so well paid. Thats something Ivr done i my games and is the calling card of Mysterium leveraging in my games!

I think relinquishing is expensive for my thyrsus but for say a mastigos I cant see it as anything less than fair. or at least dramatic

  • I'd agree but it has become expensive for me thats for sure but I don't have any STs who run for me anymore so my idea might be scewed. My previous ST was actually pretty terrible and kept pressuring me into doing relinqished spells and then dispelling them. I only quit after they had a goddamn werewolf dispel one of my spells as a counter spell after using up all my resources already.

But I think relinquished spells are still great but..
nooot overpoweredly so. I still stand by theyre super expensive, but not prohibitively so. I find them to be an excellent form of mage currency,...

Thats the reason I think digesting the food fully should make it Lasting for the same reason most healing spells are Lasting....

Well for me it would totally be lasting when consumed! But I think that's best as Storytellers preference because if the spell can end while its still in someones system, how and why and where is important for say, a loaf of bread thats really arsenic for a well timed assassination!

But if I had to argue the case, after food left the stomach its occult pattern changes and the spell is "lasting" then, even as waste its lasting.

But the simplest one is to say, eat it, and its lasting. no drama in it turning back after a day if you can always make more, and anyone...

Thanks for responding so thoroughly! To me these sorts of questions are valuable for scenarios where survival (as a skill and as a trope) are important, or where you might have to live poor or do walk-the-world stuff. The Sundered World is a particular one I think about a lot.

I was thinking more stockings or clothes that cling than things that drape, if I wanted a blood *dress* I think I'd need Matter 2 or something.

So it seems a thyrsus could "transmute" food and water through Life, it just takes waiting for your manufactured creature to produce what you needed. Good to know! Although, I'd still go for matter anyway because being able to shape-shift clothes and equipment is super valuable.

I like the reasoning that one could "restore" rotten food using Death by fraying the death-pattern? If I caught that right.

started a topic Food, Life and Matter

    Food, Life and Matter

Did a search to find more consensus on this, but I'm still not quite satisfied. I'd like to brainstorm situations in which you'd need Matter to make food, and in which situations you'd need Life, and whether you need a conjunctional arcana for one or the other.

Example, do you need Matter or Life to make an apple? It sounds like you'd need Pattern Life to me, and an example somewhere in first edition had making algae protein bars be a life 2 spell (um what?), and some of that got salvaged in 2ED, but mostly in the Purview for Life. It seems like it would be intended for this, but...
