    Making battlegroups work

I've only had one real attempt at using a large battlegroup in 3e - 2000 hobgoblins as the vanguard of a Fair Folk warband.

They... did not last all that long. Admittedly, the PCs had some assistance in taking down the group, but I felt like their capacity to fight back was severely limited.

Are battle groups meant to just provide a stat block for PCs to chew through? or is there a way for a battle group to actually become any kind of threat?

Short answer - no. They're a bit more Euro centric than the default setting for exalted, but in exalted 3 with generic weapon stats, there's nothing to stop you taking s light or medium weapon stats for a rapier style blade....

  • I personally always liked the fact there was no ready way to communicate between realms. It added a level of isolation to the stories of Alchemicals that wasn't matched by any other exalt type.

Help designing an artifact for a 2E game

There's a recurring theme in my 2E game relating to a first age solar who went a bit mad and started binding increasingly powerful demons into artifacts as both a way to coppot their powers and also using their souls as the power source for artifact effects.

One of these artifacts which will be surfacing in my game is a sceptre that contains the soul of a second circle demon (not sure which one, but ultimately a sub-soul of cecylene)

The main power of the sceptre is influence. Whoever attuned to the sceptre is able to assert powerful supernatural persuasion over individuals,...

CapitanTypo posted a Visitor Message for Jen
    Hi Jen,

Aaaaages and aaaages ago, when I asked you about doing the dragon images, I also asked for a portrait of the new character of the ghost hunter character that was introduced in the Battle for Hanto image, but in all the back and forth on the dragon images, I completely forgot about it!

Would you be up for completing that character portrait in the near future?

What would be the resources cost of a 1 litre cask of firedust? (particularly in 2e)

If Heaven appointed a lion dog as the servant to a solar artificer, and the solar made the Lion dog some artifacts as a gift for their service... what artifacts might a lion dog find useful?

Also, what circle of sorcery could a lion dog learn?

That certainly helps make the unknown progenitor of the Maidens a likely source for Quicksilver Hands of Dreaming Style...

In 2e there was a Sidereal martial art called Quicksilver Hand of Dreaming Style that people learned from dreams and was distinctly wyld-themed.

Was any more information ever divulged about it's origins? Or is it just an open emded GM plot hook?

Can the wyld affect gods or are they immune?

replied to how was the usurpation successful?
In my head, I never perceived the entire usurpation as a single event, or even a short series of similar events. There may have been an initial ambush or series of them, but then there were protracted battles and chases and hunts. After the first (half?) of the solars were killed in ambushes, the rest would lash out and their retaliation would rally many more DBs who already would have perceived the solars as somewhat monstrous.

Keep in mind that the usurpation kind of replaced the primordial war in the mythology of the DBs, so it had to have some level of epic combat.

    ...

  • They're not going to just have Lore, though. What flavour of Lore oriented individual are you playing? Sherlock Holmes? Dumbledore? Sam Tarly? Dr Who? Marco Polo? Sun Tzu?

Is your character an academic, a warrior monk, a librarian?

replied to Does creation have tectonic plates?
There's no physical reason for them to exist, but it's entirely possible there's a divine reason for their creation. After all, if creation is an island floating on a seas of chaos, like a giant ice float, it may crack and rend over time. Maybe dragon lines and demesnes represent cracks in the underlying foundation of creation that let the unformed essence flow through the created shell.

    Or not....

  • I couldn't find a specific reference about flurrying social actions. It says social actions can be included in a combat flurry, but nothing about actually flurrying social actions.

Anyone know of a reference/clarification on this?

  • Speaking of social actions, I created this single page summary of social rules for my players.

If anyone is willing to take a look, I'd appreciate feedback on clarity, or if you think I've missed anything important.

  • So you can't craft a cleverly phrased provocation or plea that carries out multiple actions on an individual in a single moment?...

  • I didn't mean to divert the conversation down this path, I agree it's not an apt direct comparison.

What I was rather inelegantly trying to spotlight was the fact that the underlying mechanics of Exalted have always been based around the principle of large dice pools/ lots of successes = more success, but this principle is not reflected in social mechanics, meaning there's a strong nudge towards combat as the way to do things quickly - yes, it's an entirely different style of play and they don't HAVE to be on par with each other, but by not having a social mechanic that has a place...

  • Yes, but that was the end product of a combat system that, after a small amount of progression (or optimisation during CC) meant that all combat ultimately became a 'wear down until someone dies' - similarly, social influence is about strategically wearing down intimacies and willpower until you get your way, or fall under another character's influence....
