I'm having a Doylist problem, not a Watsonian one. I have no objection to whether or not a religion might develop this way in Creation. My concern is whether or not this piece of the game setting can create good gaming experiences for me, and if it can't, whether or not that's my own personal hangups. From the fact that few others seem to share my concern, I'm willing to face the possibility that it might be, but I feel I've been able to conceive of a bright line that was crossed here that I don't think I've seen Exalted cross before. I don't think it's entirely in my own head....

The Immaculate Order uses concepts reminiscent of, and inspired by, Buddhism, without literally using "Gautama Buddha" and "Nirvana". If it did that, I would make me feel like I'm playing dress up with someone else's religion. Sort of like I mentioned how many of my issues are solved if the text simply presents this grand being as something with its own name, as opposed to literally "God."

Like... I appreciate the conversation, but it feels like you didn't actually read most of what I've written to this point?...

That's... sort of what I've been doing in this thread? And the easiest way to explain that is "I would feel the same way about the Immaculate Order if they centered their religion around Nirvana and the example of Gautama Buddha."

Hey, I'm certainly in agreement that this isn't a bad example of an Islam-inspired culture. This ain't C.S. Lewis we're dealing with here. But kinda like the Shark Family comic from the old 2E West book, something can be well executed for what it is, but out-of-place in an Exalted setting book. This thread is basically my effort to...

That's pretty much where I'm at. My biggest concerns are allayed if the text does what basically every other fantasy setting does and use a different name for the supreme deity that doesn't map directly to well-known real world religions. Call it "The Maker", "Illuvitar, Father of All," or anything else, and it feels more like something from Exalted, and less like a direct import.

That said, I've been discussing with some of my gaming group, and it's raising questions about where our comfort levels are with this stuff, and I'm moving distressingly towards...

That's a fair point - it's not literally monotheism. But after mosque, Abhari, marabouts, qadis, prophets, Paradise, and God, it's not purely architecture that we're talking about.

Like, if I had a culture in the south that followed the Franciscan Order, whose cardinals held mass in churches and were outranked by a pope, that's a little on-the-nose to see all in one place, but I feel I still have room to play around with assumptions. Once they believe in a capital-G God who determines whether the souls of the dead will rise to Heaven or descend to Hell, that's where I start getting...

    Thoughts on the Fajad preview?

I find myself conflicted on the Fajad preview.

I enjoy the trappings of the heavily Muslim-inspired culture. And particularly, I'm delighted to find one so far north. That's really out of the ordinary for the average fantasy setting, and I applaud the decision.

However, the presence of the monotheistic elements (God with a capital G, other spirits and cultural heroes reinterpreted as prophets, etc) are giving me pause. For me, it's pushing past "this is inspired by early Islamic states" to "this is Islam with the serial numbers filed off," and that...
