  • I read somewhere that the Shattering came to Hawai'i with Captain Cook. If that's canon, it would suggest it spread with European colonialism, which makes the most sense to me.

I can believe the Shattering spread with the Black Plague, as far as it went in Asia and Africa (unless there were areas with a low death-toll). 1350 is also, coincidentally, when the Mississippian civilization got destroyed/genocided by angry Croatan werewolves, so that could support the Shattering, or at least the Sundering, coming to the southeast States area. The Uktena wiped out a chunk of the Anasazi...

  • Thanks Heinrich.

I'm paging through the Storyteller's Vault books on the newest sale. Besides the Wild West Fera fiction book, Mr. Gone's Moldwarps (aka Weremoles) caught my eye. The concept of Weremoles would never have occurred to me. Has anyone here read or used them?

  • Hi Christopher,

I wanted to just remind you about the issue with the Khara book, that I mentioned over on its DriveThru page (posting as Ellen S.)

Also I'd like to ask about these Cave Lions and Cave Bears -- how similar are they to the canon/modern Simba and Gurahl?
And... have you considered making Bastet tribebooks for the Eurasian Qualmi/Werelynxes, and the Miracinonyx of North America? Or the Okuma?

EDIT: I feel like I already asked you about your Ceilican but I can't find where. Are yours based on "maneless lions" or on some kinda w...

  • I thought that character was an Abomination, not a mere ghoul?
On the other hand, a ghoul werewolf can threate to behead disobedient vampires during the day.

Indeed, this is the same problem with zoos, or the notion of cloning extinct animals*. Such ex situ conservation is good in the short term, but it's not a permanent solution. It doesn't do much good in the long run unless you can someday return them to the wild and keep them alive there. If that works, then the species is saved! But if their habitat is gone or someone shoots them all, what then? Keep them captive until they're domesticated? Leave them in the Horizon Realms until they adapt to the Umbra instead of Earth? Even in situ conservation is only a medium-term solution. The true solution...

Thanks Heinrich. That doesn't look like it's for me.

What's the Book of the Wyld like? For a player (non-ST) is it spoilery?

  • I'm interested in what the story is, actually.

If it does turn out the Mage is a balance issue, there could be a Sorcerer instead.

Those are good ideas Black Fox, although I'm not sure about the dressing up everyday, outside of Moot.

It occurred to me as I was thinking about this, that Mammoth would get more help for endangered species from certain Mages. There are Mage groups (the Verbena, and some Dreamspeakers) who take populations of endangered species and hide them in special sanctuary realms in the Umbra. If you ignore the notion of the Avatar Storm destroying all such realms (which I strongly dislike) then you could have a group of Mages who serve Mammoth show up to 'abduct' a large number of endangered...

How well does it work as a Werewolf story? Does Deadlands blend pretty well with Werewolf canon, or are there a lot of differences?

I have messages/conversations that I have tried to delete many times, but they have not gone to trash. I also have several subscriptions to Trouble Ticket threads that I can't unsubscribe because the threads are archvied. Can someone please help me clear these things out?

  • I usually consider Hsien unrelated to Fae, or only distantly related. But I still think every human society would generate something in the Dreaming.

In Werewolf, cloning does bad things, so that wouldn't help. I think constantly reminding humans about mammoths might help. I suppose the best option is to protect critically endangered species, to protect the mammoth spirits. Perhaps the spirits might be preserved by putting them into fetishes. The White Howlers could form bonds with animal ghosts, and perhaps this extended to cave lion spirits?

It's a losing game, though. According to Mokole, most spirits of extinct species go to the Dark Umbra, and only Mokole who remember that species can make contact with them. I suppose that...

I have to agree that deprogramming human values will take time, probably more than 1 year. Homid cubs are raised to believe very strongly in things like Capitalism and Monotheistic religions and Science, and a hatred of predatory animals. They won't give up these worldviews quickly or easily or willingly, even after the First Change and a glimpse of the Umbra upends their lives. And even before when most humans were polytheists or ancestor-venerators and could comprehend the existence of a goddess like Gaia, most human cultures still probably taught their kids to unquestionably assume that humans...

  • I like this, but have little useful to add. Back when I contributed to the Ten Thousand Things project on ShadownEssence, I had a list of "little people"-style tales that could potentially be fae, changelings, inanimae, and/or denizens. So far, including Kiths written up online, I've got:
    • 1 from Tibet (Frog-Husbands, but I lean towards them being possessed animals, maybe even animal-bodied changelings)
    • 1 from Manchuria or Siberia or north China (Fu Sang Kuo)
    • 1 from China (Pénghoú), and maybe another, but I'm told Fei Fei more resemble the thralls of an Earthborn
    • 1 from Korea
    ...

So it's actually a Translation Guide + a novel? Cool.
Edit: Huh, it's a trilogy. Which novel had the rules, #1?
