I don't really know what kind of character I'd play, though. Are we including fanlines? Specifically, Genius? Also, on a scale of one to ordinary WoD, how serious will this game be?

no fanlines until the official lines have players so maybe make a official line character first, but keep the genius in reserve. One a scale of one to WoD I say 4-5 depending on the situation. There will be some goofy teen movie stuff mixed in with the serious fantasy and horror.

I was just wondering. In that case, I think I'll probably have a Mage, a Mastigos with a focus on Mind who Awakened in a Mystery Play focused on the myth of Achilles, whose name he took as his Shadow Name. He's a sports-person - pretty much the stereotypical jock, if not quite as dickish, and
very driven when he wants to do something - but following his Awakening he's been feeling as though there's something - someone - missing, and has been withdrawing a little, if not from the sport (I'm not sure what sport, precisely. Track, maybe?) then from the peer-group around it. He's also having a bit of a sexuality crisis, having started noticing boys as well.

Does that sound OK? I'm not sure of what his relationship to the Orders would be, though. I was thinking of having his first Obsession be something like 'Who is the Spear-Carrier' or similar, referencing a figure which recurred throughout his Mystery Play, serving in the roles of friend, supporter and lover at various point. I'm not sure how the fallout of his Mystery Play would work, though, and what he actually did in 'real life'.

And yes, I'll admit that I'm channeling The Song of Achilles for this.

I am thinking that maybe Orders and other social splats don't come into play until later in the chronicle. at the start the PCs wont know about the orders, tribes, and such, let the horror of being a confused teenager with no one who understands flow for a few sessions before letting the social splats into play. Obsessions are just like long-term Aspirations, except they relate
specifically to a mage’s compulsion to explore the mystical in her life.
They could be goals to learn or research specific things. They could
be player goals for the character to encounter certain strangeness in
the world. They could be goals to use magic in new or extreme ways

so looking into a figure from your mystery play should be fine.
