  • Just wanted to clarify something here...

I thought all 3 of you had already left the FYS building, walked through the hail unharmed, and were congregating immediately adjacent to where the Iris was located. If that's so, am I correct in reading that Lynx wants to walk directly through the Iris? Or did you say he was standing in the FYS building still and about to walk outside into the hail?

    • Ragnar cast Divination inside, which is why he asked if the hail would harm them.

      • I'm a little confused myself about where the group is in relation to the Iris. Regardless, whether we're congregated before the Iris, or in the FYS building, Lynx is heading towards the Iris with every intent of walking through it. The mindset is that somebody he's putting his trust in has said it'll only lead to good things.

I'm fine with us standing next to the Iris and Lynx and Ragnar stepping through it. Being the three least experienced ones, they probably don't know enough to try and Scrutinize the Iris.

          • Sorry I haven't had a chance to do more updates yet! I'm moving soon, and haven't had the time to reply. I'll try to get something up now.

Just for purposes of keeping the action moving and because I think it's more dramatic, we'll say all 3 of you with the FYS class just walked into the Iris.

            • Well, Lynx done goofed. Good thing "Body Control" will help with holding your breath, at least.

                • Sorry if my post is a little too comedic in tone.

                  • I found it adorable. A bit of levity now and then makes the dark moments darker.
EDIT: then again, I am but a reader.

                    • Yeah, it totally felt genuine and interesting to me to see how Ragnar responded!

                            • MagicSwordsman - I'd like to slow down here for a second and back up on your most recent post. There's a few things going on that either I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish, or you're misunderstanding something about the rules -- which is totally understandable for our game's first attempt at casting sympathetically!

First, Moonstone wants you to use his hair as a sympathetic Yantra to be able to track him and cast spells on him from a distance. In mechanical terms, per p. 173, when used as a sympathetic Yantra his hair counts as a Strong connection. However, because you don't know Moonstone's sympathetic name, the Withstand rating is 2. Any spell you cast on him will thus have -2 Potency, so it needs to be at least Potency 3 to work on him at a distance. (On a tangent, this is why I asked Caladriu to pick a sympathetic name.) Remember that using an item as a sympathetic Yantra allows you to cast at sympathetic range with your Space 2 attainment, but it still counts as one of your possible Yantra for the spell casting and doesn't confer a dice bonus for the roll. If you want to use another Yantra, such as a tool, you can't cast reflexively and will need at least 2 turns to do so. That might matter when we're in initiative.

Second, the Borrow Threads spell essentially allows you to siphon sympathetic connections from someone else, which can allow you to do a number of useful things, but it's not necessary to cast on Moonstone sympathetically. For instance, you could transfer the connection from his hair sample to yourself, so now you have a direct Strong link to Moonstone for the duration of your spell. Or, you could steal the connection from Moonstone to gain a stronger connection to one of his close friends or mentors, which would then let you cast at sympathetic range more easily on that other person. In this particular example, I don't think Borrow Threads does anything useful for you. If you just want to cast sympathetically, you can already do that.

Third, according to the Sympathetic Range attainment (p. 193), you only need to be casting at sensory range. The extra reach to cast at someone you're viewing remotely would be if you used Scrying to see someone, and then wanted to cast on them directly; that would require the extra reach, but not the normal requirements for sympathetic casting.

I'm going to assume from your post that your goal here is simply to Scry on Moonstone, using his hair as a sympathetic Yantra and your Shadow Name as a Persona Yantra, and you want to make it Potency 3 and last for one scene. With Space 2, that will take 2 instant actions and the following roll: 1 (Gnosis) + 2 (Space) + 1 (Persona Yantra) - 2 (Potency +1) = 2d10. It requires 1 mana (for sympathetic range) and a total of 4 reach (casting time, sensory range, advanced duration, and swap primary factor to potency). That means you only roll Paradox 3, as this is your first paradox-risking spell in the new scene. Based on your roll, that means you rolled 3 successes on the Paradox roll, not 4, but the spell still fails.

Please let me know if I got all of that right before I reply to your IC post.

                              • Just for fun, I'm going to roll Composure to see if the Doc can keep herself from giggling about the cute moment.

Amazingly, she passes with flying colors.
