    • Finally thought of something I can do to contribute this scene!

      • Hello, long time no post, and just after I said I'd commit to posting regularly. Reason this time? I needed a time out from the forums for...another thread I made a little while ago. Maybe you've seen it, maybe you haven't, I'd rather not bring it up in a public thread. I'm open to PMs if anyone's curious, but here let's just say I opened up and got hurt when I was vulnerable, let's leave it at that.

As for Phoenix, given his lack of participation during this scene, perhaps we can explain this away by saying he didn't arrive until now. As for what caused the delay, his younger half-sister called him. Just came up with her as another aspect of Phoenix's character, she doesn't have to come in to this chronicle in any way, she's just in his life is all. Though, if you'd rather he's been there the whole time and been quiet, I can go with that, too (I just don't think Phoenix would stand ideally by with all this going on, he's not the mellow sort, after all).

        • Hey guys, just wanted to tell you that my posting opportunities will be very limited for the foreseeable. Should be no longer than a couple weeks, but may be no longer than a couple days. Just proceed as normal, Ragnar will tag along.

          • crapcarp - Hey, no worries at all. I'm glad you're back, and sorry to hear that you didn't receive the response you were hoping for in your other discussion. You are definitely appreciated and valued here in our threads! Thanks for all the neat ideas and entertainment you've brought to this game.

In regards to Phoenix's silence, I love the idea of him arriving late due to personal issues with a new angle. When you have time and feel so inclined, I would love you to flesh out that idea and describe it here. I don't think you've introduced her concept before, right? What's her name, what is Phoenix's relationship with her, and which biological parent do they share? Also, what do you want to say that he and his sister were talking about that caused the delay?

Haberdasher - Totally understand! Let us know when you're back on a regular schedule.

MagicSwordsman - Maybe this isn't your role play style, but I honestly think Binder is an incredibly fascinating character and he enhances the depth of our scenes just by hearing what he has to say in response to the situation and in regards to other characters. Binder is a family man, married and straight, with different experiences and perspectives than some of the others; if you want to contribute but aren't sure what to do, just try some dialogue with the other characters.

Also, can you believe that this game has been up for almost a full year now? I am so glad and grateful that you all have stuck around for so long.

No, I haven't introduced her, and that's because I just came up with her for this very purpose. It fleshes Phoenix's character out even more, after all.

Her name is Layla Klasina Kemp, she's his sister from another mother, his father remarried after the divorce with his mother. Since Phoenix had a very strong relationship with his mother, and considering his father remarried a measly 3 years later (the engagement started getting serious less than 1 year), and the new couple had a kid only about a year later. Needless to say, Phoenix felt abandoned and his half-sister reminded him of that abandonment every time he saw her face, and this was going on just before he hit puberty (he was 7 when his parents divorced, so he was 11 when she came along). The onset of his teenage years made the problem even worse and he ended up claiming that he hated her for several years, even going so far as to say it right in her face on a few occasions (though he didn't really hate her, he was just angry with her, and even then, it was mostly the anger with his father that he directed at her). Naturally, this created a rift between the two.

Once Phoenix left the nest, it didn't take very long of her being out of his life that he saw how much of a dick he was being, so he made amends. He promised her that they'd stay in touch, so they both call each other fairly regularly. Unfortunately, he's recently neglected that obligation, what with all that's happened, and she's letting him have it with the call. She has a lot more catching up to do than the usual, so the call takes him more time than he initially expected.

                  • Grab bag of ideas to deal with this Essence storm situation:
                    • Death/Prime/Spirit: study it with Mage Sight to see what's happening
                    • Time: Postcognition to study the scene when the cloud formed and see what caused it, possibly with Mage Sight or a ghost/spirit seeing spell active if it was something invisible
                    • Mind: Psychic Domination to make the swarming spirits and ghosts destroy each other and discorporate, or just send them away before the Essence dries up
                    • Spirit or Death: Cap the Well to keep the spirits from feeding on the Essence, maybe Shadow Walk (or Prime, Supernal Veil) to keep them from seeing it at all. Death might be able to do similar for ghosts.
                    • Prime or Spirit: Study it (ley lines? node?) with Sacred Geometry. Prime or Spirit Unveiling spells could ask what the cloud's Resonance keyword is.
                    • Forces/Prime: Control Weather with a Prime 2 requisite to turn the mystical weather effect into a clear day
                    • Life or Death, plus Fate: large-scale Bruise Flesh or Rotting Flesh effect to kill all the dandelions in the neighborhood at once. Might need Ragnar to cast Warding Gesture first.
                    • Nothing: it's free Mana! Think of all the spells we can power and Paradox we can ignore! Forget about the Sleepers, they'll be fine, probably.

Ragnar and Moonstone study the Cloud with Ophis' spell, and one that Lynx casts on them to see when the spirits got involved. Then I think our 3-dot characters go to town on the flowers after we try to limit the collateral damage with Warding spells on the houses and people.

                      • rwknoll Phoenix isn't using Forces for Active Sight, he's using Mind. And the only reason he's using that was because he sensed the passive presence of Moonstone's Goetia due to Mind's Eye. That said, it's not really important now, he's going back to Peripheral Sight.

I think you're thinking of Focused Sight. Active Sight automatically uses multiple Arcana, and then you can spend extra mana to include other Arcana.

It automatically uses the mage’s two Path Ruling Arcana, has no cost to add any third Ruling Arcanum, and costs one point of Mana per scene to include a Common or Inferior Arcanum.
So you get Forces and Prime automatically, and then pay extra to see Mind, but you still get all three. It's like...going to a movie in 3D. You pay extra to wear the 3D glasses, but you still have color and 2D perceptual abilities, because those come naturally to you.

Focused Sight, in contrast, involves staring intently at a specific subject through the filter of a single Arcanum, and adding any additional Arcana actually interferes with your ability to succeed on the roll ("Permutations Arcana", p. 93).

                            • I am assuming sharing an specific Arcanum for Mage Sight with another as Ragnar asked is a simple Unveiling spell. I will make a simple post with it.

I mean, the spell you cast that lets everyone see and interact with ghosts was essentially what Ragnar was asking for, so he already has Death covered. He was asking for help with seeing phenomena from other arcana.

Also, just wanted everyone to know that I'm sorry I haven't been very active this week. My wife and I closed on our new house on Monday! So we have been a little busy with moving. I'm also leaving for a week-long vacation tomorrow, but I'll have more down time than usual so it shouldn't prevent me from posting.
