  • [OOC] [Exalted 2.5] The Scarlet Sky Conspiracy – An Epistolary Game

In Character Thread | Character Creation Thread | Obsidian Portal

What is the Scarlet Sky Conspiracy?

The Scarlet Sky Conspiracy is a group of pragmatic Dragonblooded and Celestial Exalts who wish to set their preferred heir, Mnemon Aisa, on the Scarlet Throne. Each member of the conspiracy was recruited by an Anathema Nellens Patrician. This Anathema has remained hidden in the Imperial Court for many years. Though Anathema magic, Nellens Ryo sent up a system for conspiracy members to correspond though letters. Though a series of letters, the conspiracy will coordinate their activities to reach this goal.

    What is an Epistolary Game?

An Epistolary Game is where each player plays in their own location, yet share a common goal. The PCs share no scenes and have no contact with the other players except though letters. Each PC has actions they wish to accomplish over a certain time period (a week, a month, a season). They send these actions to the ST, who replies back with complications to the player's actions. The player decides how their character solves these complications. The character then writes a letter to their fellow PCs, explaining what they did over the course of the month and how they forwarded the PC circle's goals.

The players have almost complete control over the NPCs and location. They are basically a mini ST in their own location. The ST only provides the main goal and the complications. A game of this type seems to solve many of the issues in a Play by Post game. Combat can take place but will be summarized in the letters, thus players will not lose interest due to weeks long combat scenes. There are no scenes to be run, so if a player disappears, you can skip over them in the letter cycle.

    How to play the game?

If you wish to join the game, please see the character creation rules in this thread. Due to the episodic nature of the game, we can easily add new characters. The game is capped at ten players.

Note: These steps and/or schedule could be adjusted as the game goes on.

    Week one
    1. The Storyteller will post a Nellens Ryo letter to give an update on the Imperial Court. ST may PM a player a potential plot line.
    2. The Players will private message the Storyteller or post in the OOC thread what they play to do in their location. Players suggested complications if they wish.
    3. The Storyteller will respond with complications to the players’ plans and the difficulty rating for the complications. For now, we will use the difficulty table on Ex2 Core page 120
      1. Standard
      2. Difficult
      3. Challenging
      4. Near Impossible
      5. + Legendary
    4. The Player will respond back with their solution to the complications. Each complication will require one skill roll. In addition, the player will roll any required charm rolls. Use this dice roller.
    5. Storyteller approves player's dice rolls and solutions.
    Week two
    1. Players will write their letters and post them to the IC thread. Players may correspond with other PCs as needed.
    2. The Storyteller will post a Nellens Ryo letter to give an update on the Imperial Court.
    3. Repeat the cycle.
    Experience and Backgrounds

Four possible Experience points will be given per letter.
    1. One for writing the letter itself.
    2. One for revealing details of your character.
    3. One for revealing details of your character's setting.
    4. One for advancing the Scarlet Sky Conspiracy’s goals.
Background points will be rewarded based on your characters actions over the course of the month. You will gain one point in a background per letter. A three point background will take three letters to acquire. You may work on at most two different backgrounds in one letter. For example, you can’t double up on increasing your resources in one letter. Two different backgrounds in the same category (Contacts: Legion, Contacts: House Cathak) can be worked towards in the same letter.

    Posting Schedule

Weeks will start on Friday. I am willing to adjust the posting schedule as needed. I am still not sure about the timing of the letters.

We will be using the Ex3 Calendar for in game time. (http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/m...ion-s-calendar)

    Introduction Letters

The first letter your character will send will be an introduction to the rest of the conspiracy. The only common link your characters have is Ryo. (Unless you want to put you know another character in your backstory.)

The Introduction letter should have the following:

    1. Who are you?
    2. Where are you?
    3. What can you bring to the conspiracy?
    4. Why did you join the conspiracy?
    5. Any other details you think your character would include.

      @Eura

You have access to the same supernatural cipher Ryo used. Basically, Ryo used a custom Linguistics charm off of Letter within Letter that allows members of an oath to Communicate secretly.

Hmmm... Maybe I should have mentioned detail before....

I swear I will not be that verbose most of the time. Aisa's just very nervous, equal parts giddy and terrified, and that translates to verbosity and floweriness.

"Sell my soul? No, you must be thinking of some other sorcerer. I deal with Elementals and with Solars, no fey to be found. Their power's all form and no substance anyway. My soul is not for sale. I offer many other fine things, however. What sort of assistance can I render you today?"

it's not the anathema part that scares her - it's admitting her intentions aloud. Note how she danced around them even when magically assured she can't be eavesdropped on. If she were a 3e Solar, "At Your Service" would be her go-to charm.

Carmela, meanwhile, is unrelentingly chatty as a matter of course. (And maybe has something to prove to all these Dynasts and Celestials running around.)

I can't decide if Ryo should active Sagacious Reading of Intent to see if Carmela is telling the truth about punching/fucking two different Solars or if Ryo should be one of these Solars. Probably the one Camela punched as I doubt she would be attracted to middle aged bureaucrats.

Aw shit, people with lie detection charms, my eternal bane!

I mean, if there weren't any particular need to attach a truth value to the shit she said, she would of course clarify that they were Yurgen Kaneko and Samea, respectively, when they were trying very hard to attract outcastes (such as Risa) to their cause. :P

As it is, she's probably making at least one of those up. But she wouldn't have punched Ryo (at least not that hard) if he's total crap at defending himself. Or if she had, definitely wouldn't brag about it afterward. There's no glory in knocking a middle-aged bureaucrat's block off, after all!

I figured it was totally bullshit, but Ryo, being the paranoid type, would check.

Also, I have this funny scene in my head of your character arguing with some poor fool and Ryo just happened to be in the wrong place in the wrong time. The poor fool dodged and you unintentionally socked Ryo in the face. Ryo tries to make light of his injury and runs off. You track him down to apologize and discover he really isn't hurt, being an Exalt and all. And thus begins your correspondence.

Either way, Ryo wouldn't tell on your lies.

Not sure if I should Pm this or post it here, but Scroll of the monk has been infamously ignored in scroll of errata. My question is "can we make Flurry of august leaves concentration (pg. 88 scroll of monk) combo-OK instead of combo-basic"? It really seems to go against the mentality of the style. All of my prep charms don't synergize with my finisher, why?

Crunch: I need to spend an action activating my form for 5 motes, have 3 props that preferably can leave my person, half my props are probably not naturally a weapon so I need to use Lethal Paper fan attack to make them weapons. Lethal paper fan is supplemental and therefore can't combo with my august leaves because that charm is combo-basic. Vindictive Concubine is supplemental so it has the same problem and that one just lowers armored soak. Now I will admit August leaves is Simple (dv-2) so you could theoretically use an extra action charm with it if it was combo-OK, but as a dragon-blooded I would have to go deep in a TMA or you know, just have an addendum saying you can't/ get rid of the DV penalty and make it extra-action. If I really wanted a doom flurry there's loads of different and better ways I could do that. Solar archery does this trick better with Rain of feathered death anyway.

Hurray, not sure how crunch oriented the game will be. It's possible charm timing won't even come up.
