    Muddy Waters

Winnipeg the ruin, Winnipeg of the haunted past,
    Winnipeg of murder and flames.
    Winnipeg of cold and death,
    Winnipeg of the hopeless,
    Winnipeg the doomed.
–Jonathan Ball, Preface to The Shadow Over Portage and Main

Once upon a time, it was marked ‘Chicago of the North’ and it was supposed to be the first city in North America to hit a population of a million, but it was eaten out by corruption, and then crippled by the following strikes. It’s a patchwork city, cobbled together from the corpses of several others, and assembled around the beating heart of three mighty rivers. It’s the Heart of the Continent, born in bloody revolution, and steeped in fire and blood ever since.

It is a city of extremes.

Extremes in temperature, extremes in relationships, extremes in arts.

It has been called the most generous city in Canada, and also its most racist.
It is home to fatalistic visionary artists who never get their careers off the prairie ground.
Locals can’t wait to get out of here, and visitors don’t want to leave.

You can make one thing into another in Winnipeg, and that’s true alchemy.

    Current Player Characters
    1. @Caladiru : Earth Crisis/Earth-Dies-Screaming/Earth, Recovering Centimanus
    2. @Wormwood : Mark 5, Hero with an ‘F’ in good

    Created Winnipeg
The ‘Peg is, in many ways, a typical prairie city, a place of flat land and several rivers, the Red, the Seine, and the Assiniboine. Unfortunately, given the occasionally violent atmosphere of the city, more than one body has ended up in the muddy waters that the city is named after. For those who care to look, you can find gorgeous Chicago style and neoclassical architecture; however some spectacular postmodern buildings make occasional appearances in the cityscape.

Everyone knows everyone in Winnipeg, fitting the Canadian stereotype of small, tight-knit population centers. If you say that you know someone in Winnipeg, a local speaking to you stands a good chance of knowing them. In an average city of this size, there’s six degrees of separation. In Winnipeg there are only three. This means that word travels fast, and that any secrets that stay that way are because of a fierce sense of commitment and loyalty… or by the truly bizarre atmosphere in the city.

Winnipeg is almost oppressive in its gothic supernatural airs and elemental, Lovecraftian, meteorological harshness. But more than that, a feeling of the uncanny, of the inhuman, lies over the city, stretching back as long as anyone can tell. In the first few decades of the 20th Century, it was the home of many prominent spiritualists, so much so that Arthur Conan Doyle came to visit them, and Henry Houdini came to discredit them. It’s rather telling that neither individual spoke much about what they experienced. To this day, the city is a haven for mediums and psychics of all stripes.

Everyone has a ghost story of some kind or another, and most major landmarks in Downtown Winnipeg are mentioned as being at least casually haunted. The Spirit Woods in the South End of the city are full of carvings that may or may not provide homes to beings of the Hisil, and one massive statue made from a dead tree named Mhitik appears to be both powerful and inhabited.

Over the past several years, more and more Prometheans have decided to make Winnipeg a stop on their Pilgrimage. The mosaic of cultures, the presence of vibrant arts and culture instillations, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, has made it a veritable lab for learning about as many possible facets of humanity as you can.

    Points of Interest
The Manitoba Legislative Building is a masterwork of neoclassical architecture that was built using extremely precise occult geometry from several traditions, and is adorned with symbols from several different cultures- Greco-Roman, First Nations, Egyptian, and Roman Catholic -every single fixture and quirk in the building was chosen with symbolic intent, and to those in the know it positively glows with power. There are Athanors scorched into those stones. Decoding the building could unlock alchemical secrets untold.

The Exchange District is a hub for artists, gourmands, and coffee connoisseurs. Once, it was the economic heart of the city, and now it is the cutting edge for arts and culture. Old vaulted passages of horse and carriage hide extensive Pilgrim marks, and the local graffiti artists have taken to using alchemical symbolism in their tags.

The Fort Gary Hotel was built on the old grounds of Upper Fort Gary and is considered the most haunted building in the city.

Elysium Social Club is the premier vehicle for Goth and EMB entertainment in Winnipeg. They regularly sponsor and host performances at different venues throughout the city, and those who know even the littlest bit about the supernatural get a kind of adrenaline rush from attending. Never know when one of the Kindred will come wafting out of the crowd.

Elements Curiosity Shop is an occult bookstore mere steps away from the University of Winnipeg campus. Its owner is known for being able to pull strings and introduce customers to people a little more… involved than your run-of-the-mill psychic.

Excited! Since you gave us an open-ended start and it's the first point of interest, I think Earth's going to take advantage of the fog to risk a trip to the Exchange District in search of pilgrim marks and other signs of occult interest. Mark 5 is welcome to join!

Also, in another PBP game on these forums we keep track of resource stats and Conditions with this post header. It might be helpful to use it here too, or some other solution. You list what you have when the post starts, then indicate when you gain or spend stuff or charge an Alembic.

That most definitely works as a way of keeping track for things. Nice and concise. I'm planning on grounding the game with photography and news, at least for the portions set in Winnipeg. Hopefully that helps with the atmosphere.

Yeah, I appreciated the news stories! I might look around in Street View a little.

Do you want to talk about instinctive Milestones and Pilgrimage planning now, or wait until we've gotten Haberdasher in and maybe finished a chapter?

Caladriu No go ahead, I was just curious. And I haven't quite had the time to digest Promethean 2e yet. I may be looking for another game in January or so, once we've hit a good stride with The Supernal Suburbia.

Haberdasher feel free to join us at any time.

Caladriu sure, let's start planning Earth's Pilgrimage now. What do you see as her major challenges on the road ahead?

              Ideas from the 5 Questions:

What sort of human do you want to be?
"Handsome, masculine, tall, I guess. Mostly I don't wanna need people to like me or care whether they respect me or not, because I'm so sure of who I am and where I'm supposed to be that I've got everything I need already. I want there to be no one I'd rather be than me."
Some minor Milestones here could be: presenting as a different gender and seeing how she likes it, meeting a trans or genderqueer human, talking to a First Nations human about their heritage, finding some quality or trait that she sincerely likes about herself, being told that she doesn't belong somewhere, remaining in some place or position despite someone telling her she shouldn't.

How have humans taught you to fear and hate?
"I ain't afraid of humans, they're afraid of me. What would I be afraid of? Anyone who tries to fuck with me is gonna end up dead.

I hate humans because they're beautiful to me. It's not even anger, they're just...there, in my brain, dancing and laughing and holding hands and shit. Not laughing at me, they don't care about me, I know that. Just being happy being themselves. Even when I was a Freak, they were still in my head, still beautiful. That's what got me out.

I think the Principle created humans to show me what I can't have. What I can never have."
Minor or major milestone ideas: physically hurt a human for threatening her. Meet a human who isn't happy being themself. Feel sincere fear of a human. Meet a human who feels alienated from others. See two or more humans laughing together at the same thing. Meet a human whom she considers beautiful, and learn how they're flawed or their beauty isn't the whole story. Dance with humans. Have a human express that they care about her well-being. Ask a human why they think they exist.

How did you split with your creator?
Definitely a major or superlative Milestone here about facing her creator (if she's still alive) and making a choice about whether to continue their fight or find a way to resolve or transcend their mutual hatred. Maybe deciding whether or not she wants to create progeny after she had such a bad experience, that's also a universal Milestone though. Minor milestone: hear someone else tell a story in the Ramble about her Repute and what she's done.

What keeps you on the Pilgrimage?
"Not hope, really. Hope is a mistake.

More like knowing the alternative. I've been off the road, and it fucking sucked. You imagine there's a point where things get so bad that they break and you magically push through into something different and better, but that point doesn't exist. You just keep being a monster. It never ends.

Gotta keep pushing this stupid boulder, no matter how many times it rolls back down the hill. Sisyphus is in Hell, but at least he has a purpose."
Major or superlative Milestone: face an opportunity or invitation to give up hope and leave the Pilgrimage again (perhaps from Dead Girl) and choose what to do. It might also be totally unrelated to Dead Girl, I keep thinking it would be interesting to face some kind of weird Chronicles of Darkness third-way option that might seemingly let her escape the Pilgrimage and become something different and mysterious, taking a blind leap of Faith. "Join your consciousness with the glowing sphere of light? Y/N"

What would you give up to become human?
"My memories. My footprint. My past. Heartsblood. Dead Girl. All of it, the good and the bad. I don't want the stories other monsters tell about me, or the nightmares, or the memories of what I've done and stolen and killed. I want none of this to have ever happened, and I want a blank slate.

Maybe that's cowardly. But I know I'm not strong enough to face the wreckage. The people I left behind have to sift meaning out of what I did, and I can't help them with that. I can't make this better. The most I can do is run away and hope if I become human, I'll never have existed at all."
Minor milestone ideas: learn that some Redeemed former Prometheans apparently lose their memories. Face a bad situation that Earth-Dies-Screaming created. Draw trouble to the throng because of something she did. Encounter a sublimatus she knew or knew of her. Fight someone she victimized who wants revenge, or just answers. Help fix a problem that Earth-Dies-Screaming caused. Be denied forgiveness by someone she hurt. Superlative milestone idea: face a situation where she can either concretely take responsibility for what she did as a Centimanus, or reaffirm that Earth-Dies-Screaming isn't her and she's become someone new and different.

              ---

General ideas: I'm thinking Earth doesn't have a lot of experience socializing with humans, so basic stuff like "make someone laugh" or "hold down a job" or "attend a place of worship" or "deal with anger constructively" would be good.

I don't know whether these necessarily count as Milestones, but I want to do stuff involving Promethean culture too, especially while following Lead. Talking to a weird Cuprum ascetic sage in the wilderness or the middle of the city. Meeting another Centimanus who returned to the Pilgrimage, or being told that all "former" Centimanus eventually relapse, or convincing a Freak to return.

Definitely gotta do something involving Dead Girl, learning what's become of her, and coming to terms with that. Probably a few minor Milestones can be mined from this apart from a big confrontation, like visiting a place they were together, encountering something that traumatizes her (maybe she's extremely uncomfortable around other Galateids now or violently lashes out against the possibility of being in command of something), talking to a human who is/was in an abusive relationship, seeing a healthy relationship and understanding how they're different from what she had.

Some things that would definitely surprise her: organized and complex supernatural phenomena. Things that appear unnatural, but actually have a rational (if strange) explanation. Human-like societies of multiple intelligent supernatural beings parallel to human civilization, not just rogue bestial vampires and weird loners with a ghost inside them. Supernatural things that are beautiful in some way.
              Encountering any of these things.

              ---

All of those are just ideas and things I was thinking about- ultimately deciding Milestones is up to you of course!

Oh, Promethean culture will be a thing. I've liked the idea of this disparate, but relatively tight knit, community around the world. I'm not running with the assumption of "only 100 Prometheans" and instead running with "Prometheans are one in a million", meaning the PCs aren't a serious percentage of Created population. We'll start intimate, and eventually get big, globe-trotting, and cosmic, but keeping that intense intimacy running through it all- as a good story about alchemy should.

All of these things are great for Milestones! But I think the important thing to remember is that, for a lot of them, they'll be about choice and interpretation. I/The Principle can present the Milestone, but only you/Earth can decide what it means and take action. The only bad choice on a Milestone is walking away from it altogether. What Refinements do you want to see Earth absolutely practicing? What lessons are totally essential to her journey?

Lastly, Earth is currently a Vigilante, so what is she fighting for? What's her cause?

                *****

As a side note, pertaining to the current scene, Earth will gain a Beat, and will also gain the "Tainted Clue" Condition. She can resolve it by apply a -2 penalty to a roll at some point in the future pertaining to the local Created and their experiences. Is that acceptable Caladriu?

That Condition is fine if you want, you're the ST! Are you meaning to use the Tainted Clue tag from the Investigation system in the CofD core book? Because that's something a little different, although it would also fit here if you want to do this as a mini-Investigation with Clues and everything, that sounds fun. If we did that: maybe 2 or 3 Clues total to find an interesting and informative Pilgrim Mark or otherwise learn some occult insight?

Also, a lot of negative Conditions usually have a little more bite than that. The ones you can get by charging an Alembic without showing Disfigurements are a great model for what to apply on a dramatic fail. Like the Alienated condition on 306 is a bit harsher and would be good here instead, gotta earn that d-fail Beat after all.

                  ---

I slightly misread the Milestone suggestions on 298. Making a choice is always the important part, although some minors grant 1 Beat just for experiencing something.

Earth should absolutely hit Plumbum, Argentum, and Phosphorum. I'd be happy to have some wildcard Refinements in there chosen by you as well. Only thing I'd say is that right now, I don't think she'd have Ferrum as a required one considering that her creator built her for that and she wasn't any good at it. I can imagine her having really mixed feelings about Aes (and the Branded Throng idea in general) given that Dead Girl used to practice it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not on her list. It might, though.

She isn't motivated by a complex cause yet exactly, but finding one would be a good milestone. Right now, in line with her understanding of community, she's trying to understand the Vigilante by hanging around a particular neighborhood/block and targeting the people who are clearly (to her) making trouble. Muggings and street crime and robberies and stuff- property crime seems really important to humans. She's also seen evidence of abusers and domestic violence, but it confuses her, especially when the abuser is part of the community and the abused claim it's not a problem. She doesn't know whether that counts as a crime yet.

As she understands it, Vigilantes answer trouble that comes from within as a means of community self-purging, but she'll probably learn to deal with the idea of outside threats as well.

                    Awesome, things are taking off!
Mark 5 will definately join up with Earth, but the Elysium Social Club is in the back of his mind already. Outside of clubs, people get robbed or beaten up, a perfect place to set an example. And maybe, just maybe, he will get to fight more than a human.

                    Regarding Challenges/Milestones:

What Sort of Human do you want to be? Someone who's liked, even looked up to.
                    Being treated extremely badly because someone considers him beneath them; someone doing him a favour out of respect; someone following up on his Vigilante lifestyle because he looks up to his "hero" (which, of course, could end very badly- I also think this could be a major reason to switch to or even complete the Exemplar role); make a scene and get entirely ignored;

How have Humans taught you to fear and hate? By driving me away and even attacking me when all I do is help them.
Meet other people who have been driven from their rightful homes; Talk to puplic-service-people who get treated poorly despite of their work (hell, could be even a retail guy complaining about how he's being treated); Get invited into someone's home; receive help from someone despite having been a hassle; Experience how humans seek the comfort of other humans in dire times

How did you split with your creator? Was suddenly left alone, without a word. Despite all the help before the departure, that left a bitter taste.
Meeting up with Mudbreaker would probably be a major Milestone I guess; Mark 5 WILL both punch and hug her (he only knows for sure about the former, though). Helping him resolve those needs might lead to coming to terms with the fact that things aren't always clear-cut. It would also depend on how Mudbreaker would react to her progeny and his lifestyle - and company.
Meeting another Mark # would also be a minor or major Milestone, depending on their interaction and exchanges. The answers to any of these questions could count, too: Did Mudbreaker lose some or even destroy some of his progeny ? Were the others abandoned, too, or did they leave on their own? Did he achieve his goal with any of them? Why did he make Mark 5 so resilient? Has he, by now, fulfilled the Multiplicatio Milestone?

What keeps you on the Pilgrimage? Loneliness and dedication.
Experience and express happiness or other positive emotions about having a team/partner; be forsaken (imagined or not, justifieably due to other circumstances or not, doesn't matter) and left to fend for himself; overcome a problem/threat through repeated attempts and hard work; be in a situation where he enjoys being alone and contemplating; SEEK loneliness

What would you give up to become Human? My Name.
Learn about Redeemed who have lost their memory upon completing the Great Work; MAKE a Name for himself (through deeds and Repute).

Mark 5 has generally a few problems/misconceptions that might need adressing
                    - He only sees physical violence (or the threat thereof) as harmful: that people could be put under pressure from things other than physical threats, and that there is a difference between a construction worker (just fired because he disagrees of his bosses scumbag son dating his daughter) lashing out at his boss and a thug mugging someone for their possession is something he still has to learn. He might even mistake a bouncer kicking out an aggressive drunk for a situation where he has to "intervene".
He also thinks things are pretty much black-and-white: only good will come of good things (potential hardships, maybe, but in the end the result will be undeniably good). Intentions do not count for anything, unless it's a work in progress (someone weak training will of course take time to become strong).
That's one of the reasons he is interested in following Earth around: Obviously having been evil, she expressed a desire to become good. How unusual.

I'd like Mark 5 find a job, so he spends less time alone/among the homeless and learns more about social life. I'd like some punishment he handed out to come back to bite his ass or haunt him. Figure out that there are other ways to solve a situation than "Beat up the wrong party as punishment", especially since that is not always what the victim of the conflict wishes for. Being left powerless in a situation, or forced with a situation he cannot overcome by himself, would be interesting, too.

                    In regards to Refinements:
I would absolutely love to see Cobalus, Mercurius and Plumbum (in any order, but I like the transition of Perfecting the body -> Imperfections -> Self-discovery-> Source), and I wouldn't mind any wildcards chosen by you =D I don't really see Cuprum working at the moment, except maybe in combination with seeking loneliness, but that can change.

In regards to his current Role (Soldier):
Mark 5 wants to make the city safer. Taking out any sort of bigger threat would do the trick. Realizing his attempts to help created chaos could do the trick (and possibly make him turn away from Ferrum). Realizing he can only affect change on a smaller scale (one human life at a time), but that this is also a huge deal (means the world to that one human, after all), would be a nice lesson, too. Getting forced into a Diabolic Choice scenario like Tobey Maguire's Spiderman could teach a valuable lesson, too.

I have a character idea: a Promethean created by a woman to be the perfect boyfriend: somebody who was always there for her, who would be willing to cater to her sexual tastes. Basically, the ultimate doormat/submissive. Problem is, she started getting... clingy. What freedoms he had started getting revoked as she came to fear that other people wanted him for themselves. Tentatively, I'm naming him Adonis.

Stuck on Refinements and Roles. Adonis is basically a big goofball. Not the most aware person, but he's sweet and he just likes people. He wants to understand human emotions better, and how humans are supposed to connect with each other. Whether he's doing it himself or helping somebody else to do it, he likes making people happy. Just looking over the Refinements, Aurum, Aes, and Phosphorum seem appropriate. Cuprum may work, too, if he ever feels that he needs to distance himself from people to progress on his Pilgrimage.

Cool! Adonis sounds like some high-presence Aurum Galateid to me, which would be interesting especially in regards to Earth's... issues with Galateids =D

Hm, my character and Caladriu's butting heads a little. Sounds familiar!

I'll try to whip up a character sheet this weekend and hopefully have that submitted by the end of the day tomorrow or Monday morning.

Is this a "ground-level" Chronicle, or are the characters starting out with some extra Experiences?

Just sat down to do the sheet and initially put down his concept as "Goofy Prince Charming," but my attribute spread made me realize that Adonis is basically Rocky from RHPS. So "Real-life Rocky Horror" it is.

I'll try to whip up a character sheet this weekend and hopefully have that submitted by the end of the day tomorrow or Monday morning.

10 xp, distributed among normal and vitriolic however you want.

                            Never seen that one.

You also start at Pilgrimage 2 and with a completed Role. Which Refinement will Adonis start on (It needs to be a Basic Refinement), what Role have you completed, and what Alembics do you currently possess?

Caladriu Alienated does fit better. I'll amend the post.

Wormwood I think it's worth mentioning that the Alternate Identity Merit is meant to represent a mortal identity supported by documentation. You can be Rockbreaker the vigilante without needing to spend the dot on it, but having a mostly functional human identity would be useful.
