"Look, kid, you're obviously new at this, but let's get one thing straight. If you've been in Torment, I mean really been in Torment, you've done some things that most humans would probably call evil. Hell, you might have unintentionally done some things they call evil even without Torment, I don't know you, but I know a bit about Mudbreaker and she wasn't exactly the motherly type. Here's the thing- nobody can tell you what 'good' or 'evil' is, you have to figure that crap out for yourself, but I'll tell you one thing I know for sure. When you start talking about evil and sin, it really all starts with treating people like things."

Mark 5 just... stared ahead, numb. This was like being told you will die, or worse, won't ever manage to end the Pilgrimage. He just wanted to be liked! He wanted people to be nice to him! And now it looked like he had lived a lie. He might have done, most likely he HAS done, very bad things. Evil things. He called himself a hero, but in the end, was he just another thug, harming people because he could? Was he just a monster? He wanted to help! He wanted to improve their lives! And he never treated people as things. did he? He has always seen them as someone who made their own choices, and sometimes those choices were to hurt other people. That was evil, wasn't it? That needed to be stopped, no? His large hands covered his face as he crouched. Why did this have to be so complicated! Why did it not make sense? After all he just wanted to do good!

    "I meant well!"

That sentence lit up in his mind. I meant well.
"Sometimes, people do bad things without meaning to. If they knew what they were really doing, they would probably stop. So you need to see if people realize what they are doing. And if they don't, you need to show them what's really going on. But you need to be... subtle about it. You can't just shove their nose in it."

Adonis voice echoed in his head. He realized. He had been shown. The old man had hit the girl... but maybe he had just done the same as Mark 5 himself? Punished her because she did something she shouldn't do. Was he right to punish him? Had he been right to punish her? Scenes went through his head, and the Titan realized that many of his actions, seen by someone else, someone not understanding why he did what he did, could be considered Evil. And he was not so sure about some of them anymore. BUT! His intentions were pure! He was no monster, nor was he Evil, just another person trying to be good! Strangely, this was a relief. The sudden weight of fear for his identity, his... soul? was gone. Even though he wasn't a Hero, he did not lose hope.
Because he could still become one.
Like Earth, who did bad things, but means well, he could become Better than he was.
He would need to learn more about intention. He would need to be more careful with his judgement. He would need to find out what is Good, and what is Evil. He might even need to atone.
And then, he would be Better.
    And, maybe, a Hero.
A tear dropped from his eyes, and his sight became... clearer.
The Titan smirked to himself as he stood up, then looked at Adonis and the Nepri, and let out a long sigh. "Ahh~... I think I see. Maybe. A bit."
Then, Mark 5 gathered Adonis in a hug. It was over as quickly as it started. It was weird to do this. But it seemed.... appropriate. "Thank you."
He nodded at the Nepri "Both of you, too."

Rambles... what a wonderful thing they are.

Scout took out a notebook, and flipped a few pages, before he came to the right one. He carefully extracted a picture from where it was paper-clipped in, and held it up. "He called himself Highwinds."

Scout was in the picture with another native american looking man- much taller and broader than he was, though Scout did not have a goatee in this picture, and had a head full of dark black hair. Both Osirians were smiling. Scout was in blue jeans and a black t-shirt- much like today. The one that was Highwinds was dressed similarly, in basic jeans and a t-shirt pronouncing his spirit animal to be a shotglass.

The little nepri looked to Mark 5 in surprise, his near-monotone voice clipped with curiosity, "For what?"

???: "When you start talking about evil and sin, it really all starts with treating people like things."

War. Us. Them. The Enemy. Evil. Regret understood. For the first time in a very long time he didn't need to try to understand. He already did. He looked to Mark 5 and saw the realization too. He was like Frank after all. He did want to understand, instead of just perfect. Prime used a lot of fancy words to describe the process but Frank just called it finding your soul. He missed Frank.

And then Regret had an idea. It might not have been the wisest idea given the circumstance, but Regret wasn't that wise of a Promethean.

Taking a step closer to Mark 5 and Adonis, Regret let the dead soldiers memories inform his posture. Standing at attention before the Tammuz and the Galatea he spoke what he, Regret, felt and intended.

Regret: "I understand. I came here to learn about our kind, so that I may understand myself and the world. You came here for the same reason, although you pursue it in a different way. I think we can help eachother. I will aid you in your mission, fight on your behalf, protect you and your friend, and stay with you through your Torment. But I will not go to war. War is evil. War is..."

The words came not from Regret, but from a brief memory from the Fire.

        Regret: "...always a step backwards."

The dead soldiers followed the statement up with a salute. Regret felt it was an appropriate response. Whether or not it was would remain to be seen.

          "For what?"
Mark 5 smiled. "For helping me realize something."

"I understand. I came here to learn about our kind, so that I may understand myself and the world. You came here for the same reason, although you pursue it in a different way. I think we can help each other. I will aid you in your mission, fight on your behalf, protect you and your friend, and stay with you through your Torment. But I will not go to war. War is evil. War is...always a step backwards."
Mark 5 looked at the Not-Soldier. What a strange guy. What War? His first instinct was to send the Not-Soldier away. But then he hesitated.
His intention was to learn, to understand. Something that the Titan himself now wanted, in a way, too. Maybe what they wanted was different. But first he needed to be patient, and observe, and learn.
Additionally, he offered to help in his mission-"How does he know about the Mission?"-, which was a bit eery. Maybe the Principle send him, too? The lean figure scratched his head, small stones falling out of his hair. Earth seemed to be really important to the Principle. Big statement, maybe? Anyway, there is no reason to send someone away willing to help. He wanted to help others, too, and would love to not be send away.
So, accepting his help was... Good? or just...good?
He reached a decision. In any case, someone who looked like he could fight was always welcome. The Pilgrimage was dangerous.
That he did not want to fight was maybe a good thing.

He nodded to Regret and said: "Alright, fine with me. You need to ask Earth and Adonis, too, though."

Adonis tenses in surprise as Mark 5 embraces him, but immediately returns it. It's quite a difference, between yesterday when Mark 5 didn't even want to be touch, and now he is now touching others. Who knew that behind the tough exterior, the Titan was a big softie? He can't help but notice that he's been making a big impact on both Mark 5 and Earth today.

He considers Scout and Regret. Scout is reserved and languid like all Nepri, but Regret seems... different from other Wretched. He carries himself like a speaker, but his an Originist. A strange combination. Mark 5's choice seems natural, and so does Earth's. But a soldier who has become a scholar? Well, that's something you don't see every day.

But it makes sense. Adonis is trying to understand what they are trying to become, Regret is trying to understand what they already are. He turns to Regret.

"None of us know where this is going to end up. But we'll take all the help we can get. From both of you."

Scout listened to Regret's speech unsure, but Mark 5's response made him suddenly rivet his attention around back to the Titan. When Adonis mentioned 'both' of them helping, he turned his attention again. Was that the invitation he'd been waiting for? He looked to Adonis and tried to smile.

"I think I can perhaps assist with the matter of the missing, at least. An elpis vision, using the athanors you have as a guides. Between Regret and myself, we could perhaps learn much of the missing. It could give us more clues about the company, but will likely be quite painful. I also have gathered rumors about the locations of several Athanors- though the way would be quite perilous."

              • Evening- Friday November 4th

                Earth

Satin's smile grows when Earth latches on to the visual of the spider and the butterfly. "You know, butterflies are alchemical marvels. They grow, they develop, and then they cocoon themselves. They melt down in a solvent of their own making, and restructure themselves into a new shape. They come out of the cocoon as a butterfly." They see Earth's face and raise their hands "No joke, I read it in a book once. Point being, Azoth remembers, Azoth knows things. Maybe the Messengers are trying to tell you something." Their face falls, however, as Earth continues to speak about Dead Girl. Such ugliness that can grow on the inside, where it can't be seen, only felt.

The Riven looks at Earth very carefully, with focused intensity, and takes a calculated risk. They give Earth a hug. "I was wrong," they whispered "you do have ghosts, it's just they live inside you. Listen, Earth, you need to know that what happened, what Dead Girl did? That's on her, not on you. We will keep an eye out for her, trade the stories, pass along the news. The stories about you are already out there, but we'll let you know where she is and if she's coming. We all will." Satin stands, patting Earth on her arm, and shakes out their hair. They move as though standing to leave, and then they stop, as if there was something important they forgot to say.

"Look, we aren't human, and never were, you know? Even if we will be, one day. But these bodies aren't ours, and we aren't them. We're in here," they tap their head "and in here," they tap their heart "and that means that we are who we make ourselves to be. I'm not a dude, I'm not a chick, I'm me, and I get to decide who that is. You do too." Satin finally stands, and begins to walk away. Before they leave, they toss one more comment over their shoulder

"There's one other thing people use butterflies to represent. They used to stand in for souls."

Mark 5, Regret, Adonis & Scout

Even as the Titan has his dawning realization, a responding flare of Azoth in his gut, the warm trickle of Vitriol suffusing his flesh, the two Originists and the Muse discuss the potential of uniting their Flames in an alchemical pact. The blue Nepri's eyes widen at the mention of Highwinds, and they turn aside, stiff as the mummified corpse they were made from. How long does it take to make a Nepri, really? Does it start when mummification does, or does it start when the Azoth and phlegm flows into their bodies. The blue Nepri looks stiffly towards Mark 5 and nods curtly before turning to Scout "I'm sorry," he says "Highwinds will be missed."

It's getting late. Adonis has to meet with Erwin soon, and talk is dying down. Some of the fellow Pilgrims are dispersing, in throngs, in smaller groups, and alone. The Ramble is dying down.

Perhaps it's time to get going.

OOC: Mark 5 experiences a Milestone and gets three Vitriol Beats out of it. As a more general note, the scene (and the Chapter) is wrapping up, so decide what you guys want to do, and where you're going to go after this. Feel free to write a little vignette describing how you spend the rest of the night. We'll do a time skip of two to three weeks before the start of the next Chapter, so let me know in the OOC Thread if there are any particular Extended Actions you want to get done. The start of the next Chapter will also be an opportunity for another vignette establishing your characters' more typical, day to day lives.

When the Ramble wraps up, Adonis makes his way back Erwin's apartment to keep his date. He spends the night listening to Erwin talk about his day, and tell more about his life. He asks what questions he thinks won't be too prying: where he stands after last night's events, how many people work for Amalgama, if they have offices in any other cities, who his superiors are, what he thinks of them. The stuff he's heard humans ask each other on dates. He isn't really chatty about the details of his own life. He keeps the details general- he doesn't outright lie, either. He mentions that he was a former soap actor who dropped out of the public eye, got into a relationship that went bad, moved to Winnipeg, started a new relationship that ended amiably. "Now, I'm looking for something where I'm on more... equal footing." He doesn't spell out that he was Lily's submissive, but doesn't lie as answer to any of Erwin's questions about the phrasing. When the dinner ends, Adonis follows Erwin back to his place. They spend the night together and Adonis rejoices in the feel of another person, the thrill of hearing "his" name whispered in his ear. After, as he falls asleep to the sound of Erwin's light snoring, he still can't decide if his interest in Erwin is just as the guard of the truck containing the athanors and potions last night, or as just Erwin the person, separate from all of that.

Adonis attempts to get information from Erwin regarding the inner workings of Amalgama. 3 Manipulation + 3 Persuasion = 6 dice -> 4 successes. That's an Exceptional Success for Adonis and he imposes the Swooning Condition on Erwin thanks to the Eros Persistent Condition.

Disquiet roll: 2 Azoth = 2 dice -> 0 successes. This relationship might actually go off without a hitch!

                    Aww.

As the Riven leaves, Earth feels the urge to channel that spark of power inside her in a more positive direction. She tries to suggest they discuss this further back at Satin's place:

                    Manipulation 1 - Socialize 1 + Willpower 3, resolving Inspired. 3 dice: nope

It comes out as a noncommittal "maybe i'll see you around sometime" that leaves her with no plans for the rest of the night. Still, the Ramble went so well overall that it doesn't resonate with her Torment too much.

She ambles over to Mark 5 and Adonis and their new hangers-on, having completely missed their philosophical conversation. "Hey, nerds. That Ulgan with the hair is called Satin. I guess it's a kind of fabric. They seem...y'know, decent."

She's a little wary of Scout and Regret while they make introductions, but Mark 5 and Adonis knew her through Repute and things have turned out okay so far, so she's warmer to them than she might have been. "I said enough already today. No lectures about Flux right now. You guys should hang around with us for a while, though. We got a good thing going."

Scout gave the Nepri his smile, "Gone, but not forgotten, I believe is the term, yes? And from him we learn."

When Earth made a seemingly genuine offer for him to stick around, his smile was a little less blank, and a little more hopeful.

He promised to meet Earth 5 and the others later, before departing. Scout had many things to do. Starting with writing down the ramble. He walked for a few hours, searching for an out of the way spot to hide and write in his journal. The Nepri liked small spaces, and good views- eventually he chose to huddle up under the bridge over the Red River, finding a spot where he could look it over. The rumor about their depths played through his mind, and he wrote down the rumors he'd heard first. His writing was neat, if small, he ensured he had enough detail for anyone to

Scout was not a good artist, but he added descriptions to each Created he had seen there. Added names where he had found them. Everything he learned about his fellows, every motivation, he wrote down. Those he did not know he marked guesses for. He made note of Adonis, Mark 5, Regret, and Earth. Regret had perhaps stumbled on the wording, but Scout was certain the other Originist had wanted for them to band together as a Throng. Scout rote that into the journal, and considered it.

"I do not yet know the people with whom I shall work. That will take time, trust, and surveillance. Further, I do not know this Amalgama, LTD they seek. This will also take time, trust and surveillance. I have offered to assist them in forming an elpis dream around the Athanors which they have obtained."

Scout finished his journal and made for the nearest library after that. He would use computers and search out this Amalgama, LTD. Find what he could and bring information that he had gathered to the table when next he met with them. Yes. That would do.

Let me know what if any rolls you want for Scout to go googlin' spree. He'll start with spending a while looking into Amalgama, learning anything he can- from the corporate web page to the conspiracy theory stuff. After that he'll move to looking into the fire in the church to see if there are any news articles from when it happened. Finally, he'll try and get the best map of the city and the tunnels printed out, in case folks want to go there.

Mark 5 blinked. "What is a nerd?"
He felt like there was a layer to the comment on Satin he did not understand. Was he supposed to say something? Rather than commit a mistake, Mark 5 decided to just nod.

"I think I can perhaps assist with the matter of the missing, at least. An elpis vision, using the athanors you have as a guides. Between Regret and myself, we could perhaps learn much of the missing. It could give us more clues about the company, but will likely be quite painful. I also have gathered rumors about the locations of several Athanors- though the way would be quite perilous." Ah. That sounded familiar. The Titan gave the small guy a smile. "Nothing worthwhile is easy to reach. Thank you for your offer - I think we shall take you up on that!"

Several things went through the Tammuz head. A lead on Mudbreaker, at long last! People flocking to them to help - like that comic, League of Justice! Or was it Justice Friends?
Anyway, their group grew in size, and he took it as a good sign.
Tonight, however, he needed some time alone. Time to think on what has transpired.
The day had been wearing him down. No heroics for now - he had to think some more, first.
He might even sleep for once.
Once the Titan has said his goodbyes for the day, he kept thinking about the Ramble. His path took him outside the shelter of the city - at least, it was less urban, and there was more green, more resemblance to his 'home'. People even let their dogs run freely here during the day. This seemed like a good enough place. Laying down directly on the open dirst he scratched up with his hands, Mark 5 went to sleep for the first time in what seemed like an eternity.
                        Mark 5 will have a Pyros-restoring dream. Azoth 2 + Composure 3 = 1 sux

One difference between them is that she's not really trying to help anyone, just leave a trail of fear. People start to whisper about a figure in a ski mask and hoodie with hands wrapped in duct tape, attacking muggers in the dead of night, stealing nothing but their weapons. They say you can see fire glowing under his clothes. They say he always smashes windows because he can't stand to see his own reflection. They say it's not safe to do deals in the train yard anymore, someone is watching.

I'll treat this as an equipment building action from the CofD core. Strength 4 + Intimidation 3. I take -2 on Social rolls with humans from Disconnected, but I think if I declare that Earth has caused Disquiet in the neighborhood, I get +2 on Intimidation rolls from Weaponize. Spending 1 Pyros to activate Inscription for +3 Intimidation. And I'll go all the way with a -5 penalty for intended equipment bonus. 5 dice: 5 successes!

I was planning to resolve Informed (Stannum) but I guess there's no need. Can my x-success benefit be a Vitriol beat for understanding the Vigilante better? If not, I'll take Inspired.

When she's not doing that, she does some research.

Researching how humans use the Divine Fire. Intelligence 1 + Occult 3 + Library 1 + Transhuman Potential 3. [now at 5 Pyros]. 4 rolls with 8 dice. 15 successes needed.
                          First: 2 successes
                          Second: 1 success
                          Third: 4 successes
                          Fourth: 2 successes

9 successes accumulated. Apparently there just isn't enough about humans in her Library, which makes sense.

Not as much useful information as she hoped. But she stumbled on the name of a Manitoban independence leader during her search, speculated in some recorded rumor to be one of several humans whose seemingly mad "divine inspiration" may have sprung from the Pyros, the Messengers, or a stranger source. She asks around over the next few weeks, taking advantage of her connection to the Ramble as an information-sharer.

Researching the supernatural side of hometown hero Louis Riel and his endeavors, which were seemingly motivated by her Elpis of Faith. Manipulation 1 + Occult 3 + Connected (Winnipeg Ramble) 2 + Library 1 + Transhuman Potential 3. 4 rolls with 10 dice. 15 successes needed.

First: 8 successes. Dang. I'm feeling lucky, so I'll apply that as an exceptional success for the whole action rather than reducing the target number.
                          Second: 4 successes
                          Third: 2 successes
Fourth: 1 success. Barely made it! 15 accumulated.

She spends some time hanging around with Scout during their intellectual pursuits. He came all this way to find her, it seems like she should at least get to know him. They don't get into the big stuff yet, but she confirms that most of the stories he's heard are true, and shows off her more visible Flux scars. Yes, she used to be able to mutate her body and command Pandorans. No, she can't do it anymore, and usually she doesn't want to. But she does show him some Polaroids of Earth-Dies-Screaming with four arms and a mane of bony thorns, and a winged Dead Girl silhouetted against the moon. There are more that she doesn't show him. All she asks in exchange is: "So, what's your deal?"

The interesting thing happens when they go to St. Boniface in the course of his research. She's at least stashed her backpack at Adonis' place (to which she frequently invites herself), but she's still Disconnected from humanity, and it shows. She's showing some scarred and discolored skin, her clothes are torn and muddy, her hair is filthy, she stinks.

While she's looking around inside the sanctuary, a woman is brave enough to approach her. "How can you come here looking like that? This is God's house."

                          "God's house?"

Earth trips on her tongue and stutters. The woman speaks more slowly, like she thinks the Named can't understand. "I think you need to go home. I don't think you're honoring this space. You're showing yourself to God this way- you're coming to the wedding feast without a garment."

Earth feels something stir. This human is seeing something in this situation that she can't see. She points up at the ceiling and ventures a guess: "God is having a feast here?"

The woman reiterates as an embarrassed human takes her aside: "This is God's house."

Earth is overtaken with the Spirit.

Elpis Aspiration leads to Elpis Vision, I assume. Wits+Azoth: 2 successes. If possible, I'll resolve Informed (Stannum) to gain insight from the Athanor and make it an exceptional success.

First question: How will I know when I have completed my Role?
Second question, if possible: What major or superlative milestone will I face soon?

                            It was a good start.

Regret had come to Winnipeg to discover more of his kind, and he had. In fact, he had done much more than that. He had discovered more of his kind that would actively help him understand like Frank had. Kindred spirits who not only wanted to understand the Refinements, but also help and protect other Prometheans.

Their Rambles lingered in the Flame's memory alongside as much as Regret could muster, his own link to the Refinement of Lead allowing these memories to not fade until they could be put down onto something solid. And there was only one item Regret had that could do that: his own Journal. And in order to retrieve that, he needed to go back to the Far Place.

Leaving the Ramble he headed away from the city, into the wilderness for several miles. Regret had made sure to leave markers at certain parts of his makeshift trail, so that he wouldn't get lost again, and after about three hours of hiking he found it. Hidden in the wilderness was what he called the Far Place: a makeshift campground that he had made himself using what the dead soldiers remembered about hiding out in the wilderness. "Wilderness training" was the exact words he heard in his head when he drew upon those memories. All of the soldier had memories like it, and he used those memories when he set up the tent he stole so many months ago. He camouflaged it with tarps and trash bags and anything he could find in the wilderness. Provisions, he also stole, hung from a net in a tree several yards away, carefully held inside more trash bags and tarp. It wasn't the largest camp, and truly it could only last for so long before the temperate environment ruined the tent and tarps and trash bags just like the last camp he and Frank had, but it was surprisingly well hidden for a young Promethean's first work.

Retrieving some rations from the food net, Regret retired for the night into the hidden tent in the hidden campsite. Inside he found his most cherished belongings: A sleeping bag (stolen), blankets (also stolen), a portable lantern that's almost out of battery life (need to steal more batteries), a CD player with headphones and a Jazz CD (a gift from Frank, which had the last and newest of the stolen batteries), and a personal journal with several pens of varying degrees of ink (all stolen with the exception of the words that were written within.) After consuming the rations he set to writing down the Rambles he had heard hours previously. He recorded each name at the top of the page that contained their Ramble, and wrote so much down that by the time he'd come to Mark 5's he was completely ran out of ink. A disappointment welled up inside of Regret, he had very much hoped to record all of them tonight. But with that disappointment, a realizations. Because this sadness was his, truly his, it meant that he had truly enjoyed his experience at the Ramble. He had learned so much, and was so eager to put it down into writing that he had an emotional response all his own. Sadness was unpleasant, but it reminded people of what's truly important. And that's why it is precious to Regret. It's why Regret is Regret.

Looking down at his journal, with the words Mark 5 written at the top of the page with nothing underneath, Regret had an idea. Tomorrow he would journey into town. He would steal some more pens and batteries, and he would accompany Mark 5 on his mission so that he would both help his fellow Promethean in his Mission to find a Home and so that he would have more stories to write about after he had completed writing down the remaining Rambles.

[OOC: Well, it's been a while since I've had to do extended actions so some advice would be appreciated in the OOC Thread. As for downtime, Regret is kinda going to shadow Mark 5 and actively help him when he can. Whether it's research or thug punching. Also, he needs to steal some new pens and batteries. I can't imagine this not going well. ]

Upon being woken by the sun's first rays, the Tammuz felt...invigorated.
The following days, Mark 5 returned to his 'duty'. The new approach proved hard at first. It was like re-learning something you were deeply familiar with. It took the Titan quite some time to get a success, and even then, they were smaller victories than he was used to. However, it was more satisfying, because he knew that he was doing it better now.

Regret came along. A strange one, but obviously trying to help out.

Mark 5 smirked. "Heh. Trusty sidekick in the making? Maybe."

Scout was mildly surprised when Earth was willing to answer his questions about firestorms, pandorans, and Flux. He had expected there to be far more 'observation' than actual talking. "My deal? I'm a scientist. I want to see how the world works, so I know how we work within it. We, Pyros, and Flux are a part of the world. I want to know why, and what that means for our pilgrimage. If we do not understand ourselves, how can we hope to understand and become human? You are... like a solid piece of knowledge. A living library of the taboo. Also, a very nice person to answer so many questions, and give me pictures. I appreciate your time very much, Earth. Will you mind if I jot down what you have told me in my journal? Highwinds says-said I must give credit to informational sources. But given the topics, I can leave that out, if you like." there was a slight pause, "Also, does Adonis's apartment have a bath tub? Knowing that the Red River may lead to the realms of death, I am suddenly loathe to sleep submerged in it, even partially."

Under the bridge became Scout's most frequent hangout, an easy place for the others to find him when he wasn't looking up Amalgama or the Church. His digging on Amalgama's corporate actions didn't go well- too much he did not yet understand. However, the supernatural side for both places was... interesting.

On the trip to the church, the woman's treatment of Earth was harsh, or so Scout thought. It made him angry, though whether it was because the woman completely overlooked him for Earth, or because the way she treated Earth, the outside world couldn't tell. Still, he drew upon the Azothic Memory, searching for clues about Athanors in this twice burned place, when he was done, he gently lead Earth out. Then they were away he tried for another smile, "God, Highwinds used to say, was in the details. That woman does not understand the details of our journey, so she knows nothing of God. Or at least, I think that's how that works."

It was only days left in the month when he finally chose to attempt the Elpis vision on the Athonors left behind by the missing.
