  • 2nd Circle Demon: C'al-Siphar & Soc initiation: Symbiosis of the Burning Heart(PEACH)

First Draft Complete, Would love Critique
Second Circle Demon: C'al Siphar; FIrst Circle Demon: Rijal Al'Ghurban; First Circle Demon; Sharar Al'Najm; Sorcerous Initiation: Symbiosis Of The Burning Heart
After I can bring all of these into final draft i'll make them into an easy to read pdf

I've been working on this for a little while now. what started out as just the fiction behind a homebrew demon and the mechanics for a sorcerous initiation has grown into a fully articulated second circle demon antagonist, a more mechanically refined sorcerous initiation, as well as two first circle demon antagonists which are almost complete. Originally this was just going to be a fun sorcerous initiation based on a play on words having to do with demon possession but it has become a very enjoyable experience where i've gotten to learn how to make antagonist npcs, a process that was partially spurred on by the comments of forum contributors. I would not have gotten this far in the process of making this functional without the help of people on the forum providing their critiques and suggestions, and I know this has a lot to improve upon, so please feel free to provide critiques and suggestions, i greatly appreciate them.

    Updates:
    1. With the help of primefactorX01 there is a third shaping ritual
    2. the confusing language in the first shaping ritual has been removed and is now accessible to both mortal and non-mortal sorcerers through intimacies
    3. added scaling difficulties to the first merit according to Epee102's suggestion, still working on implementing PrimefactorX01's suggestion w/ regards to the merit
    4. Have now included two original first circle demons that i am working on finishing, the first of which is now the basis for merit number 3
    5. table of contents have been updated to reflect new aditions.
    6. third merit now updated to make the shape shifting ability more like the lunar shapeshifting ability.
    7. The Rijal Al'Ghurban first circle demon is complete and ready for critiquing (This is my first time making a stated antagonist or npc so any suggestion on how to improve it or make it more balanced would be appreciated)
    8. C'al Siphar is mostly statted out, just got to add the offensive, defensive, and socialize charms for him to be complete.
    9. C'al Siphar is completed and ready for critiquing so i can bring it into second/final draft
    10. Sharar Al'Ghurban first draft is complete and ready for critique to bring it into second/final draft
    11. Adding author's notes and footnotes to the end of each homebrew post to give references for the mechanics and to give readers an idea of my thoughts during the creation process.
    12. Author's notes and footnotes for C'al Siphar are complete
    13. Author's notes and footnotes for Rijal Al'Ghurban and the Sharar Al'Najm are complete
    14. updated the disguise merit to incorporate the contested roll concept that Primefactorx01 recommended
    15. working on the authors notes for the sorcerous initiation still
    16. footnotes completed for the sorcerous initiation
    17. Updated C'al Siphar's Fiction based on some suggestion from users over at sufficient velocity

Original front paragraph, didn't want to delete it because it gives thanks to people who helped me start this but also i needed to move it down here to have proper formatting.

After spending weeks thinking about the potential of this sorcerous working, originally inspired by how amusing i thought it would be if an "anathema" which the immaculate order claims to be possessed by demons, was actually possessed by a demon, I have finished a rough draft of both the second circle demon and the sorcerous initiation surround them. I was only able to do this with the help of the devs constant willingness to answer question in the ask the devs thread, as well as the help of fellow users on the board who helped me fill in the gaps of my knowledge on how exactly demons worked in the setting, the encouragement of those who took an interest, and the help of my fellow local exalted player who was the first draft reader of much of this.
so thankyou to Robert Vance Eric Minton Epee102 Mr.Jaxus MoroseMorgan webkilla Primefactorx01

There are still some things i need to fix, but i also wanted to get this out so i could start getting some constructive critiques that could help me balance the initiation and make it more playable.

    C'al Siphar1, The Benevolent Flame

    Updated character fiction

In the demon realm C’al Siphar was The Dying Star, whose body took the form of red molten brass and flesh pulsating and swirling like a sun forced to take the body of a man, with the dead star of his previous form lashed to his chest by bands made of solar flares, but that was not always the case. In the time before the primordial war, before he was a second circle demon and was simply the lower soul of the Primordial King Theion, C’al Siphar was the Star Of The Evening, Second Circle Deva of Ligier, who came into existence following the first sunset, when mortals gazed upon the night’s sky and wished that Ligier’s light still lingered there to guide them. After the war, he fell further than just to earth, and was dragged down to the newly formed prison of Malfease where he became The Forger Of Paths, and The Hearths Flame in the forges of The Green Sun from which he exercise complete dominion over all the hearths in Malfease.

All the souls of Ligier, the Infernal master craftsman, are crafters, and Gerevesin specifically represents his love of crafting. However, the Second Circle Demon C’al Siphar was the expressive should of linger and represented the Fetich’s need to craft, much as he represented his need to guide mortals in creation, and his regret that he could no longer do so. His need gave him the mastery of the forges throughout the Demon realm, save for those of Ligier’s own forge and Aluvia's Forge Of Night, and his regret for the ability to be in all parts of the nights sky made him The Forger Of Paths, capable of crafting doors that would fold time and space between two fixed points within the demon city as a direct reflection of Ligier’s own ability to be in all locations of the demon City simultaneously. His need also filled him with a bitterness, as he was once a prince of the sky under the direction of the prince of creation, and he was then limited to being the ruler of the hearth while contending with other self styled princes like the demon Octavian. The bitterness that He felt fueled his being, to the point that he tried to rip the last vestiges of love from mortals that ruled his regret from his own flesh and forge it into a First Circle Demon to cary that burden for him, resulting in the creation of the Rijal Al’Ghurban who carried his secret shame, and the Sharar Al’Najm who represented what he was trying to be.

In his domains The Demon was a ruthless tyrant, who exerted his will on the forges that all beings used, constantly enveloping the works of others in Ligier’s “Metropolis” with his molten body destroying them, only to reforge them anew in his vision, or requiring the Sharar to do so, all while being beset by the constant nuisance of his conquerer’s summons to creation to assist in the creation of their petty works.

Something changed however, when a mortal craftsman working at his forge accidentally summoned him by trying to create works beyond his means and ability. The craftsman was trying to create change in the world, something that the demon reviled, but was never the less moved by. The craftsman summoned C’al Siphar many times over the course of his life, whose aid he needed in order to complete the works that were beyond his ken, and the demon could feel things changing within him that he could not understand completely. He began to appreciate change, desire it even, through his work with this mortal, and the demon who for an untold millennia burned with the fire of hated like a brilliant star began to cool in the sparse of a single mortal lifetime. He began to wait impatiently for the times when he would be summoned to help this creature who aged before his eyes and whose life seemed like a candle flickering in the wind compared to his, and even tried to use his own power to fold space to escape the Demon Realm to no avail, with his duties in the forges of Malfease falling to neglect, which many soon came to notice.

This culminated in the final summoning of the demon to the forge of the mortal craftsman, who he expected to be in need of his assistance, only to arrive when the now aged being did what The Demon didn’t think possible, and crafted an artifact without his aid, while simultaneously creating what would later become known as first age artifice, and the mortal exalted. In his sadness and confusion at not being needed and the strangeness of what he had witnessed, he returned to Malfease immediately, but what he had witnessed had been the last straw in the undoing of who he was. He was changed and the spark of his old self that wanted so much to help and guide mortals was awakened, causing a new understanding began to form within him, one that allowed for the usurpation of the Primordials to be justified, and for change to be good and for creation with its current masters to be protected.

Fearing what this realization would mean for him, and knowing that the most likely outcome was his termination at the hands of Orabilis The End Of Wisdom, If Lieger did not get to him first, C’al Siphar almost didn’t notice his own not so subtle changes that had taken place; He was no longer connected as a subsidiary soul of Linger. Then as if by reflex, he forged a new path, one that lead out of Malfease and into the forge of his his beloved friend, the exalted crafter who reached beyond his means, and without realizing it light shown in his once dead former body and the grotesque being of the C’Al Siphar crumbled to ash as the now freed form of C’al Siphar stepped through the portal.

What C’Al Siphar is now, he does not know, he is not The Deva he once was, but he also knows that he is no longer The Demon either, But regardless of what kind of undefined spirit he is he resides in creation, living in constant fear of both heaven and hell for what they might do to him. To this end he constructed the Sanctuary Of Paths with the aid of his ally to protect himself from both, and soon after performed a ritual that would define his new existence, creating a bond of symbiosis with his exalted ally recreating in a way the soul structure that he was once a part of, and allowing him to work through the his selected hosts to create great changes upon the world.

    Old Character Fiction

Second Circle Demon: C'al Siphar1, The Benevolent Flame

In the time before the primordial war C’al-Siphar was The Star Of The Morning, who would shine in the night sky and mark the way for mortal travelers as they prayed to him for guidance. After the war he fell further than just to Creation and was dragged down to Malfease along with his progenitor third circle soul Lieger. There he took on the role of the hearths flame in the forges of The Green Sun and became the Forger of Paths, capable of crafting doors that would fold time and space between two fixed points within the demon city.

As a Second Circle Soul of Lieger, C’al-Siphar is the aspect of his love of crafting and represents both the crafter and the flames of the crafters Forge and his domain of power was every hearth and forge stoked by flames, so even though he lacked a physical empire, such as for example that of the Quarter Prince Octavion, their power would have spread all the farther.

In the time shortly following the war he was still filled with bitterness at his removal from the heavens above creation, and was every bit the willing participator in the functions of his hell, going so far as to use his abilities to try and remove the last vestiges of his love for humanity by forging it into one of his first circle children. The result was the creation of his two first circle offspring, the sibling demon breeds, the Rijal Al'Ghurban who epitomize his love for life and creation and the Sharar Al'Najm who formed of their own will from the sparks that flew off the anvil in the Ghurban's creation and who epitomize C'al Siphars love of creating great works.

As the master of the hearths flame, C’al-Siphar would often find himself summoned to creation to assist in the workings of exalted sorcerers, a task that he initially bristle with anger as he felt it damaged his pride to have those who cast him down use him as a tool, but this was partially for show, as a small part of him recalled how he guided mortals once and longed to do again, even in this fashion, and amusingly enough, it would be these summonings that would be the source of his rise from perdition.

Despite his being less than thrilled at the circumstances, through his work with these sorcerous crafters who summoned him, C’al-Siphar was confronted with the wonders that the exalted made, their capacity for change and ingenuity that his own self and the yozis that he was bound to lacked in their entirety. This wonderment and new perspective was only strengthened at the height of the first age when the art of magical artifice was discovered where he saw the combination of sorcerous workings with crafting to create works that before he had seen them he never would have been able to conceive of.

Somehow that spark of his old self that wanted so much to guide and help mortals was reawakened, and he began to understand that without the deposing of the Primordials, the spontaneity and creativity of mortal beings would never have been able to flourish. Comparing this understanding with what he could see before him in the vision that his own progenitor wished to create in creation, C’al-Siphar realized that he could not let this happen, that the change that creation and it mortal residents represented could not be allowed to be extinguished, forever paved over in a pathways of black and bronze. In that moment a new belief formed within him, and that was that creation must be protected at all costs, and that the yozis must never be allowed to escape. Fearing what this realization would mean for him, and knowing that the most likely outcome was his termination at the hands of Orabilis The End Of Wisdom, If Lieger did not get to him first, C'al-Siphar almost didn’t notice his own subtle change that had taken place; he was no longer connected as a subsidiary soul of Lieger. Then as if by reflex, he forged a new path, one that lead out of malfease and to creation.

C'al-Siphar now resides in creation, hiding from both malfease and heaven, fearing the one would use his newfound abilities to undo creation and that the later would exterminate him to prevent the former from happening, but at least now he is free and capable of pursuing his own goals. He knows he is not meant to be in creation, and he has been weakened by the unbinding, not being able to wield the power that he once did as part of a soul structure. To protect himself he resides within a construct called The Sanctuary Of Paths that he made for himself with the aid of a solar sorcerer craftsman from the first age, and there he can wield a larger part of the power he once had, although to a much more limited scope.

Another option remains for the demon, and that is to create something similar to being part of a soul structure again, by forming a symbiotic relationship with a mortal, and the two sharing power with one another, symbiote and host, making something greater than they were separately. C’al-Siphar has done this few times over the course of his time in creation, because although it alleviates him of some of his worries, it comes with its own limitations as well. His life becomes linked with that of the mortals, unless they can find a way to break the binding before the mortals end comes, and the method of doing so is always different. However, the benefits sometimes prove more alluring than the risks, because even though he is not the one acting, he now gains the ability to have an influence in the world, to inspire and guide the change that he fell in love with, and to ensure that the yozis do not destroy it, and though these pairings he became known in myth as C'al-Siphar, The Benevolent Flame.

For this reason C'al-Siphar almost always picks sorcerous crafters as his hosts, and always picks those individuals who wish to see a great deal of change in the world and to protect it, his understanding being alien to that of humans however, he does not always pick individuals that others might understand.

    Merits

Cult 2: Over time the change that C’al Siphar had helped others to create in the world has produced a legend of the Benevolent Flame, and some have come to offer prayers to the demon, which helps to sustain him in creation until another is drawn to help him create change in the world again.

The Sanctuary Of Paths:2 During the height of the first age when C’al Siphar realized his true purpose and became unbound from the nested soul structure of Malfease he fled to creation knowing that to remain in hell was to die, there he met the first mortal that would be his host and together they crafted the Sanctuary Of Paths. (Effects of the sanctuary outlined in shaping ritual)

The Forge Of Aster:3 The forge of aster is the dying star that is C’al Siphar’s true self it is a part of him and travels with him wherever he goes. As a Story Teller C’al Siphar does not track crafting XP but has as much or as little as is appropriate for the story taking place. (Whatever they do treat their crafting times as if they had the demonic equivalent to craftsman needs no tools and thousand forge hands)

Infallible Trust:4 C’al Sipharhas an innate desire to aid mortals and this desire radiates from their being, consequently any mortal being who gazes upon him, despite his alien appearance, knows that they are safe and in the presence of a being they can trust, and in this knowledge they are correct. All affected individuals are treated as having a minor tie of trust towards C’al Siphar.

    Sorcery

C’al Siphar is initiated into Sapphire circle sorcery and although they primarily use this for the purpose of creating sorcerous workings in conjunction with crafting, they do have the control spells infallible messenger and travel without distance, as well as any other spells the ST deems necessary for their story. They also have access to a unique
Shaping Ritual: The sorcerer sits in quiet contemplation of their place in the world and the effect they have had on others for one hour, granting them 10 sorcerous motes for every dot cult or every 2 dots of followers that they posses. These motes last until the end of the story and the shaping ritual can not be used again until all motes accrued in this fashion have been expended.

    Offensive Charms

Fist Of The Fallen Star: (10m, 4i; Simple; Instant; Decisive-only; Essence 6):5 Striking their opponent with the force of a star crashing to the earth, C’al Siphar strikes the foe in the center of their chest with all the heat that would come with the impact, sending some of their burning essence into them through the point of impact causing internal damage. This charm supplements a decisive attack adding the lethal tag to their unarmed attack, and adding essence successes to damage. On a successful attack the foe is flung back two range bands.
If C’al Siphar succeeds with at least four success they may instead have the foe collide with an object at close range, suffering damage as though they had fallen from a medium height, or knock them back to short range and have them suffer damage as if they had fallen from a short height.
If at any point the foe becomes incapacitated due to the effects of this charm they explode with tendrils of flame erupting from within them creating a bonfire effect at the location of their death.

    Defensive Charms

The Blade Passes Through: (4m, 2i; Reflexive; Instant;Essence 6)6 C’al Siphar is a being of fire, and like fire they can be intangible even when materialized if they choose to be, causing attacks to pass through as if they were attacking the air. For every die that came up a 1 or 2 on the attack roll subtracts a success from both the attack and damage rolls. If the foe’s attack fails due to this charm they suffer from the effects of being exposed to a bonfire.

Burning Phoenix Revival: (30m, 1wp; Simple; Instant;Perilous; Essence 6)7 C’al Siphar Absorbs the heat of their surrounding out to medium range in order to heal their wounds, causing sources of fire to extinguish, the air temperature to drop to just above freezing, and all surfaces to be icy to the touch. They roll their initiative and heal levels of damage equal to their successes. If they are immersed in a bonfire then this becomes reflexive.
This charm may only be used once per fight unless reset by a two or three dot stunt that alters the battlefield enough to introduce a sufficient source of heat to perform it again.

Retreat Of The Quivering Flame: (4m, 2i, 1wp; Supplemental; instant; Essence 6)8 Flame calls to flame, and as long as their is fire within the vicinity of the battlefield, C’al Siphar will always have a place they can escape to.
This charm supplements a disengage action in which the demon intends to retreat from combat, adding half the demons essence to their evasion for the purpose of the disengage. on a successful disengage they retreat two range bands and then must perform a reflexive withdraw action at half the standard goal number for a withdraw roll.
This charm can not be used if Burning Phoenix Revival has been used during this fight unless preceded by a two or three dot stunt that alters the battlefield enough to introduce a sufficient source of fire to enable its function.

    Mobility Charms

Flight of the Shooting Star: (9m; Supplemental; scene; Essence 4)
9 The bonds that hold the demon to the earth lessen as they float just above the surface of the terrain to begin their arc across the sky. While using this charm C’al Siphar does not suffer from the effects of traveling over rough terrain at super human speeds of (essence x 20) miles per hour. In combat this allows the demon to retreat up to two range bands with a single move action.

    Social Charms

Flagrant Misdirection:(5m; Simple; one scene; Psyche; Essence 4)
10 C’al Siphar survives through misdirection, and with the wave of a hand and a suggestion they can persuade even the most ardent of pursuers that their quarry is in a different location.
The demon performs this action to supplement an attempt to convince a questioning party that they are no one of interest and that they should move along. For the rest of the scene once this charm is activated the demon doubles his guile. Characters who fail to read his intentions while this Charm is during this time will pick up on false Intimacies or motivations that align with his desire to seem unimportant and be convinced they are real. If the demon enters the scene with a suitable disguise she me activate this charm reflexively (no preparation needed).
A character may only hold one such intimacy from the demon at a time - until it’s eroded entirely, any of her attempts to reuse this charm on him fail. If the intimacy erodes, he still has the false memory, but for whatever reason no longer believes it to be true.

Desperation Burns The Soul : (10m, 1wp ; Simple; Instant; Psyche; Group; Essence 6)
11For a being hiding form both hell and heaven, secrecy is paramount to survival, and C’al Siphar is keenly aware that for every individual that recalls him he is placed in even greater danger.
Rolling their social influence, the demon may attempt to obfuscate all memories of himself within the minds of those he targets.
On a success those effected gain a minor intimacy of belief that the events that surrounded the demon were just a dream, and like a dream all memory of them fade quickly with the passage of time.
If the demon exceeds their target’s resolve by 3 then any effort to make the target remember the events results in them forming a major intimacy of belief that it was another plausible figure in their memories such as a solar or dragon blooded or ifrit etc..

    Miscellaneous Charms

Opening the Paths: (Ritual; Essence 6)12 Spending a month in meditation C’al Siphar is capable of creating up to four gateways between fixed points within creation or between a fixed point in creation and one of the celestial directions. The fixed points of the entrances and exits of these gateways can not be changed once they are created, but C’al Siphar may destroy one of them reflexively at no cost, however to form another he must spend a month in meditation again.

Hurry Home: (10m, 1wp; Simple; Instant; Essence 1) C’al Siphar fades away as a new star appears in the sky, appearing the following day in the hearth of The Sanctuary Of Paths. (Only Applicable Pre-Symbiosis)

Materialize: (55m, 1wp; Simple; Instant; Essence 1) C’al Siphar manifests from a beam of light, coalescing from bits of starlight. He can not form in total darkness.(Only Applicable Pre-Symbiosis)

Measure the Wind: (5m; Simple; Instant; Essence 1) C’al Siphar may discern the nature of anyone who seek to enter the Sanctuary Of Paths, or to travel through one of his gateways.

Forging The Bond Of Symbiosis: (Ritual; Essence 6)13 C’al Siphar forms an unbreakable bond with a mortal that they have come to trust for one reason or another, partially merging their bodies together. The mortal forming the bond with C’al Siphar “consumes” the demon only for him to emerge from their chest along with the the mortals still beating heart, which continues to perform its functions as if it were still within them. This process initiates the mortal into terrestrial circle sorcery and grants them access to the shaping rituals and merits of the Symbiosis Of The Burning Heart, and from this point onward C’al Siphar can not leave the Sanctuary Of Paths.
    -
Breaking The Bond: Over the centuries C'al Siphar has bonded with more than a few mortals would be sorcerers in their efforts to change the world, and if there was no way to break the bond before they met their end then the Fire demon would also find themselves at the end of their lifespan. Since that has not happened it can be assumed that for each time that the demon has bonded with a mortal they have found a way to break the bond. If there is a set way to do it then the fire demon either does not know it or is not capable of speaking of it, but if their life is to continue then it must be found before their host dies.
    Writers Notes:

I originally came up with this idea when I had the thought of how amusing it would be to have a character who was actually possessed by a demon considering that the immaculate faith states that all anathema are possessed by demons, and since i was also wanting to homebrew a sorcerous working that would give the character the ability to disguise themselves as a dragonblooded, i thought i should combine the two, and this made me think of calcifer from howl's moving castle.
I started by writing the fiction for the demon's backstory and justifying why they would be different than the normal fare of second circle demon, which was helped along after getting some advice from the dev's in the ask the dev's thread where they let me in on some fiction in the series from the past about how some second circle demons were able to side with the gods and break from the bonds of thier higher souls. Finding this out i started to get the idea of a demon on the run in creation.
I tried to include as many aspects from the character in the movie as possible, but in the end the charms and characterization grew more out of what i felt was appropriate based on the fiction i wrote, which means that most of their charms have to deal with running away.

    Foot Notes
    1. Siphar in arabic means travel in arabic, which is convenient lol
    2. This Merit is based on the castle from the movie that is dependent on calcifar to power it. translating that to exalted it seemed to me that the castle should be an artifact that belongs to and is attuned to the demon, rather than the sorcerer. more description of its abilities are in the sorcerous initiation post.
    3. This is based on aluvia's forge of night with an appropriate reskinning
    4. I wrote this originally for the Rijal Al'Ghurban, though it seemed appropriate that C'al Siphar should have it too, the original one is based on the merit that the agata mount has that grants anyone who gazes on them a tie of wonderment.
    5. The charms writing and cost are based in part on octavian's charm that grants crippling effects. Thematically, this ability was inspired by the show fist of the north star. i was having trouble coming up with a combat move so in my notes i literally wrote "something something star fire" and when i looked at it again it made me think of this so i tried to model the move after it.
    6. This is basically a thematic reskinning of Fakharu's flowing body dispersal
    7. This is also just a reskinning of his river drinking renewal, this one and the previous are the only ones that matched so well i could just change the elemental aspect of them.
    8. This charm was an original concept i had after reskinning burning phoenix revival, i wanted something that could play off of that cold environment created by the former, or rather would be disadvantaged by it, and i also wanted to have something that would make it so that he could run away. It should be clear by now that almost all of C'al Siphar's charms have to do with escaping or putting distance between him and his foes, he does not want to fight.
    9. I used octavian's mobility charm as a jumping off point for this, as well as the charm cost, but ultimately that charm did some things i didn't like and i wanted to emphasize that this was for running away. In the end i took the immunity to difficult and hazardous terrain from octavian's ability but took movement speed aspects from the spells cirrus skiff and storm wind rider for reference.
    10. This is based on the charm Master Thespian style. I had originally written out a whole separate charm but then I realized that this one provided a better base that was supported in the game already so i adapted the charm i wrote to be closer to it in design.
    11. This charm is based on memory reweaving discipline
    12. This is a mechanical writeup of the ability of C'al Siphar that I wrote about in the fiction t open up pathways between two fixed points. I understand that teleportation is generally frowned upon in the setting but there is precedent for it in the celestial circle spell Travel Without Distance, which allows instantaneous omnidirectional travel over a space of several miles. in this case the omnidirectional aspect is taken out making it only allowed to go to certain points, its ability to be used from anywhere is also taken out and it may only start from fixed points as well. I felt that these two aspects being taken out depowered it enough to justify removing the distance limitation, Although i am thinking of making it only be able to go to places that the demon has traveled to before, which would further depower it. I made the cost for using it a ritual with a month long process of creating further paths because i wanted to further ensure that it wasn't something that could be abused, although i do imagine that the demon would tactically use the spell travel without distance to escape to a location that they have a path at, disapear behind it, and then reflexively destroy the path to prevent them from being tracked.
    13. This charm is a translation of the process of symbiosis that we saw in the movie howl's moving castle. not sure what the in game benefits would be of the sorcerers heart not being where it should be, an unknowing antagonist might try to do a called shot on the heart only to find that it is not there and face the consequences i imagine.

Sorcerous initiation: Symbiosis of the Burning Heart

As chance would have it you encountered the enigmatic being known as C’Al-Siphar, The Forger of Paths, who hides from all for his own protection, only occasionally venturing out from his hidden domicile close to the pole of flame when the desire to shine in the sky draws him forth. Perhaps you were guided by apocryphal legends of a Demon of Benevolent Flame who sought to help the world despite his origin. Maybe you chanced upon him in a moment of vulnerability as The Star of The Morning fell from the sky, as he is always fated to do. It is even possible that the being sought you out himself, sensing within you an opportunity to have an impact upon the world once more, and to serve as one of its many protectors and creators of great works. Regardless of the circumstances, you have made a pact with a demon of fire, binding your soul and fate to his and both of you are changed for the pairing.

      Shaping Rituals

The sorcerer's power to shape the essence of the world comes from the bond that they share with their demonic symbiote. Once per day the sorcerer may benefit from this bond by by spending a scene socializing with C'al-Siphar, if they commit a WP point while doing so then they gain SM equal to the level of the intimacy of the sorcerer towards the demon added to level of the demons intimacy towards the sorcery multiplied by 2 until the end of the day.
Socializing can be represented by either communicating with the demon, feeding them from the sorcerer's own table, literally breathing out the heat of one's breath upon them, or anything else that the ST rules as appropriate.
This calculation can be represented as ((si + di)2)1

The life of the sorcerer and the life of C'al-Siphar are linked from the time that they first make the bond of symbiosis together until the time that they are separated by some means. If the one feels pain, the other will feel it, if the one feels relief, that too will be translated to their counterpart, and if one is to die, the other will soon follow. While C’al-Siphar is protected most often in his sanctum, the same is not true for his sorcerer host. During times of peril the demon seeks to bolster the chances of his host and while in combat, for every level of damage a sorcerer suffers they gain 2 sorcerous motes.2

As a former second circle soul hiding in creation, C'al-Siphar is well familiar with the feeling of desperation. The sorcerer, likewise able to feel this desperation through their symbiotic link, has learned to master this feeling to their own benefit. In a moment of desperation the solar may burn an object on their person that they have an intimacy towards that is tied to another intimacy they possess. Doing so consumes the intimacy they had towards the object and downgrades the intimacy that was tied to it. In return they receive SM equal to the intensity of the intimacy they had to the object added to the (original) intensity of the intimacy that the objects intimacy was tied to, to be used immediately. This shaping ritual may only be used if the sm's gained would cause the immediate completion of the spell they were working3

      Other Benefits

      Burning Aspect4 (Merit 3):
Forging deep bonds of friendship with their demon symbiote, the sorcerer’s very nature is colored by the experience, taking on a visage of flame, all their workings, the physical manifestations of their spells, and all of their essence (including their anima) becomes aspected by fire,5 flames naturally grow more or less powerful around them at their command,6 and a sorcerer who purchases this merit may also use it to make an (occult+Intellect) roll to magically disguise themselves as a generic version of a flame aspected being,
by projecting an aura of flame around them.7 This disguise can mimic the form of Flame Elementals to flame aspected Dragon Blooded and even a flame aspected Demon Of The First Circle who has a connection to C'Al Siphar.8
This Disguise Action takes the form of a contested roll, with the Sorcerer being affected by penalties based on the difficulty of the disguise and the contesting parting gaining bonuses on the roll based on their familiarity with the form being attempted.9
      • The Difficulty Penalty for the roll is determined by the level of difference between the sorcerers native form and the form they are trying to mimic, with the attempt to simply appear as themselves but a version of themselves that is a flame aspected being having no penalty, and an attempt to appear as a specific species of flame aspected being suffering a -2 dice penalty for every degree away from the sorcerer's native form as determined by the ST, with the degrees of difference being somewhat, very, and extremely different, for a maximum possible dice penalty of -6.10
      • The Bonus dice granted to the contestor of the disguise role is determined by their level of familiarity with the subject that the sorcerer is attempting to mimic, as determined by the ST, the levels of familiarity similarly being not at all familiar, somewhat familiar, very familiar, and extremely familiar with the bonus dice being granted being 0, 1, 3, and 5 respectively.11
If the contesting party exceeds the sorcerers roll they do not know the sorcerers true nature, but they know that they are not who or what they appear to be. This roll can be supplemented by larceny charms and social influence.12

(in the case of an exalted, although the effects of the burning aspect will add flame aspects to their anima, it will not be able to mask the true nature of it, most obviously for those exalts who possess iconic animas, in which case their iconic animas will be as usual but surrounded in flames. For this reason the disguise ability can only be used when the exalt is not flaring)13

The Sanctuary of Paths14 (Merit 5):
With the purchase of this merit the sorcerer gains access to The Sanctuary Of The Paths, an artifact forged in the first age by C'al-Siphar with the aid of the demons first solar host, which serves as the creation bound sanctuary of the demon C’al-Siphar. The Sanctuary functions as a fully automated mobile fortress which the sorcerer is capable of forming evocations with,
and is powered by the demonic energies of C’al-Siphar’s flames and the bond between symbiote and host,. When this merit is first purchased the sanctuary takes the shape that the sorcerer desires, limited to being a heavy vehicle of varying internal and exterior dimensions, appearances, and non-offensive functions depending on the sorcerer’s needs, but whatever shape it takes, it must include a hearth and a workshop for C'al-Siphar to dwell in.
First Evocation:15 Unlocking the fecund ingenuity of both the sorcerer and the demon through the strength of their bond, the two gain the ability to perform a sorcerous working of the terrestrial level ambition 1, as the ability to transform is already hardwired into the sanctuary itself16, to recalibrate the functions and the shape of the fortress, unlocking the form of both an airship or, in more unusual circumstances, a boat.
Upon completion of the recalibration, if this is not the first time that the sanctuary has been recalibrated using a sorcerous working, the experience points spent to hold the sanctuary to its previous shape are returned, but a new recalibration can not be started unless the sorcerer has enough xp already at her disposal at the time that the working starts.
Second Evocation:17 Unlocking The Paths- The solar gains access to C’al-Siphar’s ability to create "paths" (technically folds between the interplanar space between two fixed points), able to have 4 locations that they can go to from within the sanctuary (at the st’s discretion), and can only be reconfigured when the sanctuary itself is reconfigured.

Third Evocation:18 Bigger on the inside?- Just as C'al Siphar is capable of folding the interplanar space between fixed points to create what mimics instantaneous travel, the space inside the sanctuary can likewise be folded, removing limitation imposed on the interior of the vehicle by its external size.
Form of The Demon Bird19 (Merit 2):
Upon purchasing this merit the sorcerer gains the ability to take on the form similar to one of C’al-Ciphar’s first circle offspring in a way that mimics lunar shapeshifting with the only limitation being that the Rijal Al'Ghurban being the only form that they can adopt. The sorcerer may assume the demon's form by spending 4 motes and the transformation lasts indefinitely until the sorcerer reverts to their true form (which is free and reflexive).
Similarly this grants the sorcerer access to all of the Ghurban's physical dice pools, as well as the demon's special attacks and Merits, including their ability to project a protective shield against the effects of the wyld, the underworld, and malfease around themselves and up to two others.

      Authors Notes:
      To come

      Footnotes:
      1. This shaping ritual is based on the times in the movie where you seen howl revitalizing calcifer, most notably where he almost extinguishes and he breathes on him to bring him back to life, the original version i had written up for this was confusing, overpowered, and didn't have a means for mortal sorcerers to use (since it required a mote pool) as pointed out by two users who provided me with their critiques, and so i rewrote it, made it a wp investment, and made the benefit depend on the level of intimacies shared by the demon and the sorcerer to one another which i feel characterizes the original intent of the ability better than my first write up.
      2. This is a very simple way of demonstrating the connection of mortality between the sorcerer and the demon
      3. This shaping ritual was actually made with the help of a forum user who suggested the possibility of separating the burning of a valued possession that was originally part of the first shaping ritual into its own ritual that effected existing intimacies. This now takes the form of a desperate act where the sorcerer sacrifices part of their own self to the demon for the sake of life saving sorcerous motes
      4. This merit was originally something i had been wanting to do for a while, originally intending to modify the ifrit pact to include it, but it fit very nicely in with this one. Originally i had thought to have it be a latent ability of the initiation itself, but after posing the question as to the possibility of this to the devs i was informed that it should at least be locked behind a merit tied with a roll or standard cost, which is what lead me to design this.
      5. This is how it sounds, a cirrus skiff will appear to be a cloud with wisps of fire coming off of it, an iconic anima of a library will have the library burning, a solar saber would appear to be made of flame so on and so forth
      6. This part was influenced by a combination of the ifrit ability to have flames respond to them and also as a desire to mimic the fire aspected dragon blooded signature move that allows for the control of a forest fire, obviously not as powerful but it could be stunted to help a social role to make someone believe the sorcerer is a dragonblooded
      7. Generic means generic, this will never grant the user the ability to disguise themselves as a specific individual or spirit and essentially is just giving them the ability to use occult to disguise themselves as something that they would not normally be able to disguise themselves as.
      8. Someone had suggested to me that a demon might be a little bit jealous in the way of other demons and not want thier host to try to pretend to be a demon that wasn't closely associated with them, which i kind of liked and decided to run with, so the sorcerer could disguise themselves as being a generic flame aspected demon, or basically try to just pass themselves off as a demon which could work against people who dont have much knowledge of demons, or they could try to pass themsleves off as a Sharar Al'Najsm, one of C'al Siphar's first circle children, but they could never try to pass as a gilmyn.
      9. PrimefactorX01 suggested that the disguise should be a contested roll, with the character getting penalties and the opposer gaining benefits based on the opposers familiarity with the subject being imitated. to me this seemed like it could end up being overly complicated in the case where a whole group of people showed up and the character would get a different penalty roll based on each of their personal familiarity levels, but they were able to convince me that having it be an opposed roll would cut down on dice rolls in other ways. I made a compromise between the standard disguise roll system and the opposed roll, so that the sorcerer rolls based on penalties generated by the difficulty, and the opposer rolls with dice bonuses based on their familiarity. this way even if every person in a group has a different familiarity level the sorcerer's roll stays the same.
      10. I took the -2 dice difficulty strait from the disguise rules in the core book with the three level difficulty system to make it easy for any ST's (including mine) who would have to decide how much of a penalty to apply to the character's roll.
      11. The bonuses are based on the sugestion that PrimefactorX01 made to me, which i then again broke down into a three tiered sytem, with an extra level of no familiarity.
      12. I can't remember where i got the idea for this part but i know it was in the core book, ill try to find it and update this note when i do.
      13. I added this note in because after some confusion with explaining this to my ST i thought it was important to stress that in the case of producing false anima's it is not possible to crate a false anima using this to cover up an actual anima, especially an iconic one.
      14. As i said in the note about the sanctuary in the C'al Siphar write up, i decided that it made more sense to have it be an artifact that C'al Siphar made with the help of a solar in the first age, and that he was attuned to, and that the sorcerer gained access to based on their connection. I then threw most of its special abilities behind evocations to make sure it was not overly powered. I also stressed the fact that it was only capable of non-offensive abilities to prevent anyone from potentially confusing it with a war strider.
      15. This evocation is inspired by the scene in the movie howl's moving castle in which C'al Siphar and Howl are able to do a spell ritual together to change the shape and function of the moving castle, increasing its size, adding new rooms, and at one point giving it the ability to fly. an example of the ritual can be found in the inspiration post linked to in the contents section of the first post.
      16. after reading through the sorcerous working description in the core book it says specifically that the emerald circle deals with transformation and enhancing the natural functions of the thing affected, which is what is being done with the working and the ambition scale since it is only altering the artifact and its internal functions. (by functions i should clarify that i mean things like running water or a stove or beds that fold themselves the sorcerer can not decide they want the sanctuary to functiion as a factory cathedral)
      17. This was similarly inspired by the movie, just as C'al Siphar's ability to bend interplanar space to create pathways over long distances. this evocation effective gives the sorcerer the ability to create the paths that the demon has the capacity to make, although they can not disable them reflexively and they can create new ones as quickly as they can perform a sorcerous ritual, but one of the fixed points of all the paths is always the sanctuary. again justification for this ability is in the existence of the spell travel without distance, but also in the second edition sidereal hearth stone Home's Hearth which granted the ability to instantly teleport back to the hearthstones manse at any point.
      18. This one is a direct Who reference and its just for fun honestly, felt I needed another evocation
      19. This was a difficult one, the write up i originally had didn't make as near as much sense as the current version since i had not yet read the lunar transformation rules yet that were in the core book, and i was trying to use a prefab demon that was made by a user for second edition, but after i created my own second circle demons and incorporated the rules for transformation that are in the core it made a lot more mechanical sense i feel.

I...think this is intreasting, but can't say much on balance? I like the idea. Difficulty should probably scale. After all, a need fire swarm isn't as easy as an Ifrit.

Basically an artifact, which makes me...iffy? on it as a sorcerous merit. I'd make it something the Sorcerer can create perhaps? Idk.

Effect seems fine, but I'd need to know more about the chidren to say.

Ah I meant to have the cap be ten motes invested in this way, so a 20 sm return if that's not too much, but also I hadn't thought of mortal sorcerous and I need to create an option to make this work for them

Yes this is why I put the tbd for difficultly because I know it should scale but I'm not sure how to make that work

In the fluff write up for the demon I had him make the artifact sanctuary himself with the aid of a first age solar and his first host, this merit would be in effect be purchasing a first age artifact, but more importantly it is the only way that someone can purchase this artifact. The effect I think would be that the atunment is maintained by virtue of the symbiotic bond rather than committed motes.

I had a link to the first circle children in the fluff but I'll put them here too, I mostly took them for aesthetics though.

Mortal Sorcerers who lack an essence pool can instead increase their bond by investing 1-2 point of wp, taking the same form as a sorcery investing personal mosts, and receive 5 or 10 sm respectively.
Let's compare this shaping ritual to a canon one that also allows the conversion from normal motes to sorcerous motes, namely the Talisman of Ten Thousand Eyes
            • The Talisman allows you to commit up to 10 motes, taking a scene in meditation to do so, once per day.
            • These motes can be converted at a rate of (Essence + 2) motes per turn shaping a spell.
            • Normally has a conversion rate of 1m to 1sm, unless it's being used on a control spell, where it becomes 1m:2sm.

Your ritual is clearly superior, with a standard 1m:2sm conversion rate, no speed limitations, and as written, no commitment. I would look for tradeoffs for the straight up improvement over the canon ritual, or tone down the benefits.

Note that "invest motes" isn't a system term. Are you spending or committing?

"Personal mote" however is a system term. Are you purposefully only allowing the use of motes from your personal pool?

Hmm this is true, and your right I don't want this to be just a simple thing that the sorcerer can say they did off screen so it needs a time requirement and it's got to be balanced with existing powers.

I've also had the difficulty of making this something mortal sorcerers could use, so I think I'm going to change it to when ever the sorcerer spends one scene reinforcing the bond between themselves and their symbiote they may commit one point of wp to receive ((level of hosts intimacy towards symbiote+level of hosts intimacy towards host)*2)
And limit it to once per day, I'll have to remove the ability to burn something personal to the sorcerer though but that's ok.

The Talisman has a ritual that's keyed only for essence users, so I think that's OK as long as they have other another ritual they can choose from.

I personally like the flavor of "Burn something important to the sorceror." Because sacrifices for power are sort of in theme for a demon, ya know? Maybe move that over to its own ritual that a mortal sorceror would be able to do as well. Probably still with a wp costs.

Hmm I like that, I've been needing a third shaping ritual and one that can provide an instant effect without causing physical damage to the sorcerer would be very good. I just got to think of the fluff description for it and how much sorcerous motes it should give.

First thought is to tie sm gain to intimacy. It should be something that's important to your character, so it should follow that it's something that you have a positive intimacy toward. So you burn a photo of your daughter, which you have a defining intimacy toward, and you get the full mote gain... at the cost of losing the intimacy.

Sure, it can be gamed by someone deciding to build intimacies toward, say, pieces of paper. But at our table, you can bet I would force you to play on those intimacies. "No! Paper! Don't tear Paper-chan! Please!"

Ooo that's a little costly having it be tied to intimacies, the example of something similar to this from the ifrit shaping has it be tied to resource value of the burnt offering but it could be an interesting way to get rid of unwanted intimacies.

alright did some updates to this,
                        1. there are now 3 shape sorcery rituals as Primefactorx01 helped me come up with the third one,
                        2. there is no longer any confusing language in the first shape sorcery ritual and all aspects of motes and wp has been removed to make it accessible to mortal sorcerers and to prevent it from being over powered, now it gains it's benefit solely from the level of the intimacies the sorcerer and the symbiote have towards one another and requires the ritual to gain teh benefit
                        3. based on Epee102 suggestions i have added scaling disguise penalties to the first merit, added clarification to the second merit, and also included a link to the wiki source of the C'al-Siphar's first circle children.
                        4. most likely i will soon scrap the connection to bogmod's grindle all together and try my hand at designing my own first circle demon for this case since even though their fan creation on the exalted wiki under the soul structure of lieger was what helped me to eventually make that decision, the grindle is in the end somewhat too different from what i was originally envisioning, which is more along the lines of a flying crow beastman tribe i remember reading about once but can't find a reference to now, so as soon as i can get a feel for how to create a first circle demon i'll update that

The disguise should probably be a contested roll vs another character's Perception + Awareness, or perhaps Perception + Occult, rather than a flat difficulty.

I agree with the idea of a penalty depending on what it is that you're trying to copy, depending on how far away it is from you, but I also think the opposing party should get a bonus depending on how familiar they are to your target. (Assuming you go for the contested roll idea.) You copying a flame aura of a flaming demon (which you happen to have intimate knowledge of) against people that have never seen a demon? 0 for both parties. You trying to fake a raging Flame-Aspected Dragon-blooded anima in the face of a 200 year old Fire-Aspected Dynast? -5 penalty for the sorceror and +5 for the Dynast.

reading through the disguise rules, the contest of people being able to recognize the person trying to make the disguise is usually something that is done after the intial disguise roll, and after they have been in the presence of the disguised for some time, with the dificulty being determined by the number of extra success dice that the individual doing the disguise rolls.

What i'm getting at is that it would be hard to do this as a contested roll because then the person doing the disguise would have to reroll for every new person that saw them. i think it is fair to have the regular penalties to the roll based on the dificulty of the roll, and then allow any person who might have more intimate knowledge of the kind of flame aspected being that the sorceror is trying to disguise themselves as to gain an extra benefit to their roll, as you said, but i just don't think it is feasable to have it be strait contested since the roll for disguise is supposed to only be done when you don the disguise.

Edit: i hope this makes sense, just got back home and i'm a little tired lol

Edit 2: I understand what you were saying better now, I'll write up the fix and edit it in in the morning.

Love the idea of a demond that escaped malfeal because it essentially rebeled against the primordial hierarchy

I might well use this joker in a later game
