  • Storytelling resources

Ages ago, I saw a thread where people were talking about keeping a list of quirks that villages could have, so that they could easily produce a memorable village for the PCs to pass through when traveling. I also remember someone suggesting that storytellers watch fight scenes in martial arts movies, then describe them aloud as practice for running compelling combat scenes.

What sort of resources do you have for coming up with cool stuff on the fly? I'm interested in general, but I'd be especially stoked if someone has a system for quickly generating courts of scheming Fair Folk.

I'd love having something like that village generator for a campaign I'm planning. I'll haunt the thread in case someone has a link.

My favorite resource, though, has got to be fantasynamegenerators dot com. They've got tons of generators for all your noun-naming needs and I've found it invaluable. Even if they don't have something I'm specifically looking for (last time that happened I was trying to name a boat) they'll have something close enough that may suit your needs. Actually, looking at it now they may be able to cover that village generator with a few description generators they have (Town, City, Country, Realm, etc.)

This isn't exactly an answer to the question as-asked, but my most successful storytelling resource lately has been a OneNote page full of random ideas. I toss more in as they come to me. Some of them come from various anime or movies. Some from inspirational art pics people post. Some have no particular source I'm willing to confess.

This may or may not be what you’re looking for, but I found it immensely useful for my Western Pirates game:

For names, I like Voidstate’s Exalted Name Generator:

Most people are probably already aware of it, but there's an interactive map that calculates travel times that I've found extremely useful running my games.

Exalted Behind a Screen of Jade, Savant of the Immaculate Texts, No Moon Scholar, Good Sitting Dog, Best Lurking Cat with Bones, Pioneer Pooch, Corsair, Director, Keeper of the Karstein Manor, Scion with Shield of Knowledge, Erymanthian Boar, Seeking Awakened, Cloaked Changeling, Family Head, Kindred, Agent, Poltergeist, Disciple of the Antler Crown, Wraith, Conspiracy Theorist, First Time Traveler

This is mine too. I keep a section in my day planner for jotting down ideas and kernals of adventures. I give them a * for idea (adventure, location, problem), C for character, and A for artifact.

I might type mine up today. Want to collab? We could make a shared list of interesting plot hooks

Please be warned: this is not champagne, this is most likely a duck.

I'm game! You're way more deliberately organized than I am, but I'm already typed up.

My ideas lists are scattered entries in OneNote, with the intent that I can scan through them when I'm in writer's block. Very stream of consciousness and random.
