  • Ask a question, get an answer

I'm not sure if this was in the former forums, but I feel it should be made.

This is a forum for Exalted questions that won't necessarily take up an entire thread, but rather require one or two answers from fellow players. I imagine this would cover newbie questions on the rules, canon and whatnot, but given that Exalted is a pretty complex game I feel this is necessary.

I'll start: What's the point of the Socialize skill? Throughout my running of Exalted, I have never run across a situation where Socialize could be used where it couldn't be easily replaced by Presence. Does anyone else have this problem?

Socialize is sort of the social version of stealth. Much like you could use larceny for a lot of stealth rolls, sometimes you're just being sneaky.

So basically it'd be something like....A character makes a socialize roll against an opponent's awareness. If the character succeeds, he could make a social attack as if his opponent has 0 MDV?

I think it's more hiding your own motives and stuff like fitting in perfectly. See Mastery of Small Manners - best charm ever if your character isn't a local, it lets you belong anywhere.

That's how we used it in our game. That and straight up rolls to lie to people.

In 2e Socialize is also used to calculate the difficulty for determining if someone has lied, what their feelings are right now and learning about their personality, with the "Discern Motivation" action on p. 131 of the Core, and it can be used in place of investigation to learn such things yourself.
            (The formula is (socialize+manipulation)/2)

I also always used it for "reading the scene." My players once infiltrated a fancy dress ball in Thorns, and I had the Eclipse use Socialize to try and figure out the interplay of social position and attitudes at work among the various nobles. He rolled really well, and later when it was time to cause a distraction, he actually managed to turn the ball into a knife fight between two nobles, and then a riot between their factions, it was pretty awesome.

In the character creation rules for Exalts other than Solars, is it that they can't have a virtue higher than 3 at character creation or is it 4?

Achemicals, Dragonblooded, Lunars and Sidereals cannot have a virtue higher than 3 without spending bonus points at char-gen.

Green Sun Princes and Abyssals cannot have a virtue higher than 4 without spending bonus points at char-gen.

Does a usage of Melee Excellency to attack also raise Parry Defense Value until his next action? Or do you have to use it for attack or defense.

As I understood it, it you had to spend for both. The advantage in 2.0 was that you COULD spend on both, without a combo. 2.5 made this far less handy.

And War, too. Your rating in it restricts how effective you are at making social unit attacks.

If I have a charm that adds dice and a charm that doubles dice, which comes first. For example if I have a charm to add to post soak damage dice and a charm to double post soak damage dice which comes first?

My characters tend to be murder hobos but as a player I tend to feel really bad about every NPC death. What should I do?
