  • Rules hack: Exalted on the Cortex Plus engine

While we've been waiting for EX3, I went off and wrote a Cortex Plus Heroic hack for Exalted. It's basically the same system as Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, with some major cleanup and some new elements, reworked for Exalted. It's apparently good enough that Cam Banks, one of the writers of MHR, shared the link with his Twitter followers! I've been sharing it around my usual haunts, so I figured I'd stop by over here and share it with folks on the Exalted forums.

    Exalted: Blood and Fire

I'm currently in the middle of an art drive to collect a few nice pieces to liven up the pdf, and some fantastic artists have volunteered work so far. If you'd like to have your art featured in the final release version of this fun little fanwork, just message me. And either way, I hope you enjoy the hack! It was a blast to write, and several people are apparently running it for their own games now. ^_^

Over a hundred views and no posts? Ah well, guess people aren't that excited about C+. XD

You may want to change the thread title to something more indicative of the project, like "Rules hack: Exalted on the Cortex Plus engine"

Looks very interesting. I do agree that changing the title would be a good idea though (Not sure that you can do this though...).

I'm not sure I can. Probably would have been a good idea, but I didn't think about it at the time. Ah well. Even the best of us have off days. XD

Take a point of Limit and move on.

Someone seems to have done it for me! Do I still get the point of Limit? XD

I'm not familiar with the Cortex Plus engine, but I'm seeing some mechanical bits with some interesting hooks already. Seems like a nice choice! Thanks for putting this together.

That said, I ran into a wording that had me puzzled for a bit. I may have just had a derp moment (heh, moment), but maybe it could do with a little more clarity. In the section on Distinctions, it spells out that each character has three, describes the first, and then mentions/describes "the other two" in the same paragraph. Then the next paragraph starts with "Another Distinction," which initially read to me as "another in addition to the first three." Which seemed plausible; wouldn't be the first time I'd run into "You get x power traits, and then a weakness trait." On rereading the section, I got it together, but the last paragraph briefly had me thinking "You get 3 Distinctions, and then a weakness trait, and then your choice of another Distinction or weakness." Ha ha, yeah...

So, my minor suggestion is to change the beginning of the Trouble Distinction's paragraph to: "Your second Distinction should be your Trouble Distinction," just in case I'm not alone in making initial screwball interpretations. ^_^o

EDIT: Oh, hunh. ... Looks like Distinction is repeated? Along with Essence and Power Sets? I guess the first pass of them are just meant as an overview...? Huh. Have you considered glomming the two iterations together to put all the info in one place?

Thanks! I'll go back and check the wording, but the first pass is entirely meant to be a short overview, followed by in-depth discussion.

Art is rolling in for the final version of the pdf! I've taken one of the best pieces by TequilaSunburn on DeviantArt and begun working on turning into a cover. The picture itself is still unfinished, but I liked it so much I wanted to go ahead and get started on what the final cover will look like. Take a look:

Let me know what you all think!

OMG I loooooooooooooooooove Cortex Plus! MHRP is one of the best games out there as far as I'm concerned!

That said...yeah, this is the official Exalted forum, people here tend not to get as excited about things that don't use the official system...because that's what they want to use, after all. And y'know...waiting for Ex3.

Congrats on this hard work, I'm not familiar with the C+ system, but I'll chech this out.

About the cover: the picture is not bad, but I'm not sure if it is the most convenient for the cover. The cover must reflect the interior of the book in some way. It must invite you to read, and as good as this picture can be, it'ss the image of a man's back. I can't help but feel a bit repelled by the cover, I can't identify a face or anything. The tatoo is the center of this character, but the tatoo isn't about something I would remotely relate to how I concieve exalted. Maybe if he had a Dragon Tatoo it would make me think of the Dragon Blooded, but then again, your work comprises the complete exalted host, so a cover with just one character from just one of the splats may be a little misleading.

I think you can find a better cover for you fan product, really.

So...BWH...if I hug you and never stop, is that like...okay? 'Cause I feel a need to glomp you for doing this project. I may finally be able to convince my WoD-rules fearing group to play Exalted.

Sure! My wife might object, but I leave that to you to work out. =3

More seriously, thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate it!

While I appreciate your interest, I think that your critique on the cover is in a minority. Most people I've talked to have liked the picture. More than that, I think that you're focusing on the wrong detail--it's not about the man's back, but his perspective. The viewer is looking out across a burning battlefield, past a man in a determined posture, clearly ready to do something about it. I think the final version of the picture conveys it a little better too:

Also, please remember that I'm just a fan working on a shoestring budget here. All of the art in the supplement is either donated, gifted, or bought at very low commission rates. Saying "You should get different art" is basically a non-starter unless you're willing to contribute it. I'm working with what I've got, is what I'm saying--even if I didn't like the piece personally (which I do), I don't have any realistic way to replace it.

Hope that you like the material when you get a chance to read it.
